load_snapshot_entities' queue-frame decode migrates from the old raw
{name_len,name,status} layout to {payload_len, capnp QueueAdminState
bytes}, still calling the unmodified restore_queue_state. Adds a new
host-frame section decode after queues, dispatching to
restore_host_state (worker.c, task 3) with the same bounds-checking
and restore-before-advance discipline as the existing job/queue loops.
Un-ignores test_snapent_load_snapshot_restores_entities_before_advancing_position
(blocked since task 2.2) -- now passes for real. Also fixes a genuine
regression in test_snapshot_recv_out_of_order_chunks_assemble_correctly
(test_config_repl.c): its synthetic checkpoint-body filler landed on
the new host_count field's offset, tripping the cluster==NULL guard --
pinned to a well-formed host_count=0, matching that test's existing
fmt/job_count/queue_count precedent. Task 4 of 19.
Requirements: 1.10
Adds independently-extensible Cap'n Proto frames for the upgrade
snapshot's host/queue admin-state sections (frame-only, not reusing
Worker/QueueConf which bundle dynamic state) and bumps
SNAPSHOT_FORMAT_VERSION 1->2 so a checkpoint written under the prior
raw queue-frame layout is fail-loud rejected rather than
misinterpreted. Task 1 of 19.
Requirements: 1.9, 5.7
Drops the two cfg.port = ...; struct-literal assignments in
test_commit_barrier_rollout.c and test_config_repl.c (removed field, task
1.2). Repo-wide sweep found no other genuine cluster_config_t literal
referencing a removed field.
Full clean build now succeeds (153/153 targets) and controller_unit_test
passes 976/976 with zero new failures.
/xce-audit-invariants controller found two live violations of the async
I/O thread-role contract: ha_demotion_convergence_fn (ha_convergence.c)
ran WAL truncation + tlog_exit()+execv() directly on the delaymgr thread,
and ha_catchup_continuation_fn (config_repl.c) ran unbounded WAL-streaming
to a standby directly on delaymgr -- the same single thread that drives
heartbeats and election timeouts cluster-wide, so either blocks liveness
for the whole cluster and risks a spurious election.
A prior vtask-pool offload attempt (2026-07-10, bug-1429) deadlocked
controller_unit_test because c->ha.pool is never initialized by the
lightweight unit-test fixtures these functions run under, and was fully
reverted. This fix instead uses the codebase's established slow-lane
pattern (the same mechanism already used for snapshot-send, config-push,
and peer connect) -- a 4th and 5th instance, not a new mechanism.
New g_drive_async_demotion_offload / g_drive_async_catchup_offload flags
ship default OFF, matching the original rollout discipline of the three
reference offloads (shipped OFF, flipped ON later after a dedicated
compatibility audit). Flipping ON was tried during validation and
reproduced two distinct hazards against pre-existing fixtures that never
call slowlane_init: the already-known hang, and a new ASan SEGV in
commit_advance_locked (logged as bug-1452, not root-caused, deferred to
the future flip-to-ON audit). Both flags verified OFF and the full
976-test suite clean, then the committed state re-verified clean against
a live 10-round chaotic and 10-round sequential HA soak (zero job loss,
zero divergence, both PASS).
Only 21 of 86 test_*.c group functions called their own nested
UNITY_BEGIN()/UNITY_END(). Each nested call reset Unity's global
NumberOfTests/TestFailures counters, so controller_test.c's final
`return UNITY_END();` -- the value meson test actually gates on --
only ever reflected whichever small window of tests ran since the
LAST nested reset, silently discarding pass/fail evidence for
everything before it (measured: 16 of 972 total tests in one run).
The same nested-BEGIN calls also caused PASS/FAIL banners to show
the wrong source file for tests in files that don't reset it
themselves (Unity.TestFile just carries over from whichever group
last called UNITY_BEGIN()).
Fix: replace every nested UNITY_BEGIN() with UnitySetTestFile(__FILE__)
(sets file attribution only, no counter reset) and drop the matching
UNITY_END(); add the same UnitySetTestFile(__FILE__) as the first
statement to the other group functions that had neither. The 2
genuinely standalone binaries (test_job_array_sched_push.c,
test_job_array_apiserver_push.c -- each has its own int main(), not
registered via controller_test.c's TEST() macro) are untouched.
Verified: single consolidated summary now reads
"972 Tests 0 Failures 0 Ignored OK", exactly matching the
ground-truth RUN_TEST call-site count across all 83 registered
group files (976 total minus 4 belonging to the 2 standalone
binaries). Every PASS/FAIL banner now names its own true source
file. Full xce-build.sh all regression pass clean (Ok: 9, Fail: 0).
No production code touched -- test-harness plumbing only.
ha_send_snapshot_to_standby ignored the network send's return value in its
chunk loop, silently truncating a transfer on a mid-stream error while still
logging "complete" (bug-1386). Fixing the silent drop exposed a second,
independent bug in the same pipeline: ha_handle_snapshot_chunk appended
received chunks in arrival order instead of at their wire-carried
chunk_offset, so out-of-order delivery across the vtask pool corrupted the
reassembled file even though every chunk's bytes were individually correct
(bug-1389). Fixed by checking every fallible call in the send loop and
switching the receiver to pwrite-at-offset with a count-based completion
tracker.
Adds snapverify/snapdiff xce_test commands (offline checkpoint-file
structural validator and byte-level comparator) used to diagnose bug-1389 and
kept as standing diagnostic tools for future snapshot-transfer triage.
g_drive_async_configpush_offload flipped back ON after both fixes, validated
via 6-round chaotic + 3/3 force-snapshot soak (raft-drive-async task 3.3).

Both fixes are real and independently verified; the drive-async flags
(g_drive_async_snapshot_offload, g_drive_async_peerctrl_dispatch_enabled)
stay at their production-default OFF -- see the tasks.md session note for
why the flip itself doesn't land in this commit.
1. Snapshot-lane borrowed-endpoint hazard (task 3.2, bug-1197 family):
ha_snapshot_send_dispatch now takes endpoint_ref(ep) before submitting to
the slow lane, released on every non-lane terminal path and by
snapshot_lane_fn on completion. Reuses the general bug-1298 endpoint
refcount system (standby-ep teardown already routes through
endpoint_unref via cluster.c's endpoint_killer) -- a concurrent RDHUP
teardown can now only drop the owner's reference while a transfer is in
flight, never free the ep out from under it. New test:
test_snapshot_offload_holds_endpoint_ref_across_transfer (RED->GREEN).
2. Catch-up streamer WAL_CHECKPOINT bug (found while verifying #1 via a live
soak, pre-existing, unrelated to the drive-async flags): ha_stream_wal_
to_standby had no filter for WAL_CHECKPOINT markers -- local-only
bookkeeping that still consumes a real LSN slot via persist_write_
checkpoint_marker's own current_lsn++. It shipped one to a catching-up
standby, which correctly refused it (persist_wal_write_replicated
rejects type==WAL_CHECKPOINT) and got stuck retrying the same LSN
forever. Fixed by skipping WAL_CHECKPOINT entirely in the streamer loop,
mirroring the existing replay_wal/term-index precedent of treating
checkpoint-marker LSNs as invisible gaps. New test:
test_wal_stream_skips_checkpoint_marker (RED->GREEN).
Attempted flipping both drive-async flags ON after landing these fixes (the
"full fix, defer prod flip" decision's prerequisite -- 4.1+4.2 are green).
A 6-round --chaotic soak passed clean, but a --force-snapshot soak (a
genuinely empty node cold-start rejoin, the one scenario chaotic mode never
exercises) surfaced a THIRD, not-yet-root-caused issue: the freshly-wiped
node's own self-election appears to race cluster_init_phase2's vtask-pool
wiring, then the process hangs silently (no crash, no ASAN report) until
killed. Reverted both flags to OFF rather than ship an unproven state --
production behavior is unchanged by this commit. Full controller suite
green and both soaks (--force-snapshot, 6-round --chaotic) pass clean with
flags OFF, confirming no regression from the two logic fixes.

Adds checkpointTerm (@6, append-only) to the SnapshotTransfer wire
message. The leader stamps it via persist_entry_term(p, checkpoint_lsn)
when sending a snapshot; the standby reconciles it into its own
per-LSN term index (persist_reconcile_checkpoint_term) right after
persist_load_snapshot succeeds, before applied_lsn advances. This
authoritatively overwrites any stale local term a divergent
pre-snapshot entry left at the checkpoint LSN, closing the gap task
3.1's RED test proved (Expected 7 Was 3 -> now passes). Transport
stays persist_t-free; the reconcile lives in persist.c per the
existing dependency direction. Decode is auto-generated via capnp
mapname; only the hand-rolled encode path (request.c/typemap.h, needed
for the raw snapshot payload) required a matching manual update.
test_ha_core_safety 25/0, test_config_repl 66/0, no ASAN reports.
ha_handle_snapshot_chunk now logs whether a received checkpoint was
fully entity-restored or was a legacy position-only file (INFO level,
framed as an expected rollout state -- never an error, per design.md).
The rc-gates-applied_lsn control flow is byte-for-byte unchanged from
task 5.2 (confirmed by review) -- this task is purely additive
observability, matching design.md's own note that this call site
"needs no change" once persist_load_snapshot's gate is correct.
New test drives the legacy path end-to-end through the real production
handler (rc==0, file renamed, applied_lsn advances to the legacy LSN).
This completes the integration layer -- write path (jobs+queues),
restore-before-advance read path, and the production wiring are all in
place and independently reviewed. Only validation tasks remain (7.1
chaotic soak, 8.1 rollback compatibility).

Replaces the naive task-5.1 stopgap with the real restore contract:
detects legacy vs entity-bearing checkpoints by remaining file size;
restores every job then every queue status via restore_job/
restore_queue_state, in file order, with bounds-checked length-prefixed
reads; only after every entity restores successfully does
current_lsn/checkpoint_lsn commit to the checkpoint's position. Every
failure path (bounds check, decode, restore error, unrecognized
format_version) returns before that single commit point -- position is
provably untouched on failure, never partially advanced.
Also fixes the pre-existing restore_job decode leak (job.c): job_init
deep-copies submit (never nulled) and MOVE_PTRs allocs/pidinfo/
pend_reasons (nulled on the one path that runs) -- free_Job(&j) is safe
unconditionally on every reachable return path (EEXIST early-return,
create_job success, create_job failure), verified against the exact
generated free_*_ptr null-check guards.
Two pre-existing test_config_repl.c wire-protocol tests needed their
synthetic garbage snapshot bodies updated to a well-formed empty-entity
tail, since load_snapshot now genuinely parses past the legacy header
(previously ignored); their actual assertions (chunk-reassembly
correctness) are unchanged.
This is the exact function/contract that caused task 2.2's rejection
(position advancing before restore validated). Independent review
traced the memory-safety fix through the generated capnp code field-by-
field, confirmed the test_config_repl.c change doesn't weaken any
assertion, and confirmed restore_queue_state's ENOENT-aborts-the-whole-
checkpoint behavior is faithful to design.md's unconditional contract
(flagged as a watch-item for task 7.1's soak, not a defect).

The bug-850/851 forward-gap contiguity guard (persist.c:839, added in 20e59d0b)
correctly rejects a catch-up entry whose lsn is ahead of the WAL tail (-EAGAIN).
7 test_wal_catchup_* tests in test_config_repl.c predate the guard and applied
non-contiguous LSNs (42, 10-12, 1000+) to a fresh persist (current_lsn=1),
failing deterministically. Seed current_lsn to each test's first applied LSN so
the in-order stream is contiguous (mirroring the real catch-up streamer); the
apply->advance path and all asserted semantics are unchanged. Test-only; the
production contiguity guard is untouched. 179 controller tests, 0 failures (x3).
Two coupled fixes for a live commit-stall (committed_lsn pinned at the own-term
NOOP while a 3-node cluster was durable to LSN 5 — jobs acked but never committed):
bug-991: the WAL catch-up applied_lsn was advanced to lsn+1 (next-to-apply) in
the three live/catch-up apply paths, but recovery/checkpoint/init and the leader's
catch-up streamer treat it as last-held. The over-advertise made the streamer skip
an LSN -> library logOk wedge -> no WalAck. Fixed to last-held (= lsn).
Option A (design reconsideration of REVIEW ISSUE 3): removed the
committed = min(durable-majority, raft_commit_index) ceiling. Under single-writer
the durable-majority watermark is already (term,lsn)-current-term-safe (term-carrying
replication + (term,lsn) reconcile/truncate-before-durable + own-term NOOP gate +
post-election truncate-to-safe), so the library commit_index was a redundant,
starvation-prone gate that pinned committed below the safe durable majority whenever
the library lagged. The durable-majority barrier + own-term writable gate are now
authoritative; raft_commit_index is inert-advisory.
Safety: reviewer-verified the durable-majority watermark is (term,lsn)-safe and
Figure-8 holds via the own-term gate (new RED->GREEN test); bug-851 cannot recur.
Live: commit trace 4->5 + walcompare committed-prefix identical across 3 nodes.
177 unit tests pass.
Wires config_committed_marker to a production consumer (config_activate_committed):
verifies pushed bytes' sha256 against the committed marker before activation, fences
(loud, non-serving, stay-alive) on mismatch, and activates the latest committed marker
on recovery. Enforced via ha_dispatch_gate + promotion gate.
Fixes bug-981: a 2nd+ config upgrade could permanently fence a standby on a
push-before-commit ordering. Adds an off-iomgr delaymgr retry scheduled from the
commit-advance hook (atomic read + non-blocking enqueue only on the ACK thread) that
re-activates and clears the stale fence once the new marker commits and bytes verify.
Wires do_upgrade_config_with_bytes to append WAL_CONFIG_MARKER through
raft_log_append (live term-stamped consensus record), demotes committed_config_tag
to a non-authoritative cache, and derives the committed config from the latest
committed marker. Preserves the derive across checkpoint compaction via an optional,
backward-compatible config-ref tail in the snapshot sentinel.
Standby sends WalAckReply via xce_reply after each successfully
applied WAL entry. ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry signature extended
with endpoint_t* and cluster_t* parameters. walackreplymsg union
arm added to RequestReply capnp schema and xce_reply_t. Error
entries skip ACK. Dispatch gate test confirms OPCode_walCatchupEntry
allowed in CTRL_STANDBY/ELECTING/INIT.

6.3: Fix single-node bug — ha_compute_safe_committed_lsn now returns
self_lsn instead of 0 for n_peers=0 (prevents WAL truncation on
single-node re-election). Add self_lsn/self_tag to ha_elect_ctx_t,
populated unconditionally in ha_start_election_async. All 3 test
scenarios pass under ASAN.
6.4: Add test_snapshot_recv_128kb_two_chunks (128KB snapshot in
2x64KB chunks, verifies size and applied_lsn); 4 other test cases
already existed from tasks 3.5c/3.5d. All ASAN-clean.
- Strip handle_ctrlhello: remove repl_add_standby, WAL streaming,
snapshot check, push_config_to_standbys, and CtrlHelloReply
- Keep only: set primary_ctrl_fd, call ha_on_heartbeat_received,
arm ha_arm_heartbeat_timeout_vtask, log INFO
- All replication decisions now handled by heartbeat decision loop
- Test: call with NULL repl + config_tag mismatch → no crash, no repl
messages enqueued, primary_ctrl_fd set correctly
- Add ha_repl_send_snapshot_hook seam in ha.c/ha.h for XCE_TESTING
- test_dispatch_repl_action_send_snapshot: verifies SEND_SNAPSHOT
decision triggers hook when standby_lsn < oldest_wal_lsn
- test_snapshot_recv_two_chunks_assembles_and_renames: verifies standby
assembles snap.part across chunks and renames on isLast=true
- test_snapshot_recv_reconnect_discards_snappart: verifies O_TRUNC
semantics on chunk_index==0 restart after reconnect
- All tests pass under ASAN
- SEND_SNAPSHOT uses checkpoint_lsn (not committed_lsn) for file lookup
- ha_send_snapshot_to_standby stats file for actual total_size
- ha_compute_oldest_wal_lsn scans WAL dir for min segment LSN
- Removed hardcoded 131072 and oldest_wal_lsn=0 placeholders
ha_stream_wal_to_standby() reads WAL from committed_lsn range, accumulates
entries to 256/64KB per batch, enqueues all via xce_request() (non-blocking).
Partial final batch sent immediately. Wired into STREAM_WAL case.
3 tests: 500-entries/2-batches, partial batch, empty range.
Fixed stale task-number comments per review.
OPCode_nop handler now sends stateReport {applied_lsn, config_tag}
instead of nodata. Function in ha.c for unit-test linkability.
Two tests: warm state and zero-state fresh standby (Req 1.4).
Extend ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry with batch branch:
- Check n_entries > 0, iterate entries[] list in order
- Apply each via apply_wal_entry(); skip NULL/errors without crash
- Advance applied_lsn once after full batch (not per-entry)
- n_entries == 0 falls through to task 2.1 single-entry path
4 new unit tests covering full batch, partial batch, error skip, fallback
Replace stub with ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry() calling apply_wal_entry().
CAS-advance applied_lsn on success; log ERROR and skip on failure.
Standby stays in CTRL_STANDBY throughout. 3 new unit tests.
xce_replconfig_reply_raw() - primary sends reply with real bytes via endpoint
xce_replconfig_req_ssl() - standby sends request over raw SSL socket
xce_replconfig_reply_ssl_decode() - standby decodes reply from raw SSL
xce_upgrade_config_req_extract() - documents architectural limitation; returns -ENOTSUP
xce_upgrade_config_req_extract_raw() - extract bytes from raw packet for OP_upgradeConfig
Same bypass pattern as existing xce_replconfigpush_req_raw(): build the
capnp message directly via capn_new_list8 + capn_setv8, sidestepping the
encode_Data_ptr path that routes raw bytes through xce_data_t (a
discriminated cluster-data union that cannot carry raw byte arrays).
Unblocks handle_config_request() and do_one_config_fetch() wiring.
Task A research finding: xce_upgrade_config_req_extract(xce_request_t*)
is unimplementable because xce_decode() calls capn_free() before any
handler runs, and decode_Data_ptr converts the wire-format List(UInt8)
into a zero-filled xce_data_t. Task D must capture the raw io_packet_t
bytes before xce_decode tears them down, then call the _raw variant.
Replaces blocking pthread_join() per thread with a CLOCK_MONOTONIC
deadline + 5ms poll loop. CONF_PUSH_TIMEOUT_MS (500ms) now enforced.
Matches design §6.3 aggregate timeout guarantee.
- Add done field to push_ctx_t; push_thread sets it on exit
- Add static wait_all_with_timeout() before push_config_to_standbys()
- Wire push_config_to_standbys() to use wait_all_with_timeout()
- Add #include <stdatomic.h> to config_repl.c
- Guard push_ctx_t local typedef with #ifndef XCE_TESTING
- Expose push_ctx_t and wait_all_with_timeout_for_test() in header
under XCE_TESTING for unit test access
- Add test_wait_all_with_timeout_slow_threads (timeout fires, acked=0)
- Add test_wait_all_with_timeout_fast_threads (all complete, acked=3)
- Update design doc §6.3 with actual implementation signature and
5ms poll interval note
load_primary_config() reads from workdir/name/conf — conf_save_config()
was writing to workdir/conf. Latent bug: would have corrupted upgrade
restart cycle once Task 11 wired the upgrade path.
Update all conf_read_current_filename, conf_get_saved_tag, and
conf_check_stale calls in the test suite to use the corrected
effective_dir (workdir/name) path structure. Add new test
test_conf_save_config_path_consistency that explicitly verifies the
written path matches what load_primary_config() reads.
- load_primary_config(): resolves conf/current, reads raw bytes, computes
SHA-256 tag, decodes Cap'n Proto via load_cluster_config_from_file(),
checks reserved names, sets config_generation, checks staleness
- myconf_fini(): frees conffile and cluster_config (calls free_ClusterConfig)
- Remove static cf global from myconf.c; get_default_conf() now uses a
local struct cluster_configuration* via load_cluster_config()
- Add load_primary_config_for_test() under XCE_TESTING in config_repl.c
to test path resolution without triggering FATAL
- Add xce/cluster_def.h include to config_repl.c and test_config_repl.c
so cluster_t is complete when XCE_TESTING is active
- TDD: test_load_primary_config_missing_returns_error passes (18/18)
