Two independent call sites duplicated target = max(committed_lsn,
last_written): ha.c's heartbeat/stateReport dispatch (repl_ack_decode_and_
dispatch) and config_repl.c's catchup_derive_target (used by the ACK-driven
catch-up continuation path). Once config-upgrade-snapshot's marker-triggered
checkpoint advances last_written one LSN past an already-committed
committed_lsn (the checkpoint's own consumed, never-replicated LSN slot),
the unconditional max() permanently wedges every standby's catch-up target
at an unreachable value -- the primary re-streams an empty range every
heartbeat forever.
Extracted the shared, pure ha_compute_repl_target_lsn(committed_lsn,
last_written) (ha.h/ha.c), which only falls back to last_written on genuine
committed_lsn==0 bootstrap, and pointed both call sites at it so they can
never disagree again.
Fixing the second call site exposed three pre-existing tests in
test_convergence_verification.c that hardcoded the old buggy formula's
output as their expected target; updated their fixture values (committed_lsn
4->9, matching appended_lsn) to decouple them from the now-fixed edge case,
which already has dedicated pure-function coverage in test_ha_role.c.
GREEN: full controller_unit_test suite = 1040 tests, 0 failures, clean
across multiple runs. Live-verified via run-ha-soak.sh
--config-upgrade-wal-trim (18 jobs, zero job loss, ctrl-1 reconverged 3-of-3
using the preserved floor segment) -- unblocks config-upgrade-snapshot
task 8.9.
Only 21 of 86 test_*.c group functions called their own nested
UNITY_BEGIN()/UNITY_END(). Each nested call reset Unity's global
NumberOfTests/TestFailures counters, so controller_test.c's final
`return UNITY_END();` -- the value meson test actually gates on --
only ever reflected whichever small window of tests ran since the
LAST nested reset, silently discarding pass/fail evidence for
everything before it (measured: 16 of 972 total tests in one run).
The same nested-BEGIN calls also caused PASS/FAIL banners to show
the wrong source file for tests in files that don't reset it
themselves (Unity.TestFile just carries over from whichever group
last called UNITY_BEGIN()).
Fix: replace every nested UNITY_BEGIN() with UnitySetTestFile(__FILE__)
(sets file attribution only, no counter reset) and drop the matching
UNITY_END(); add the same UnitySetTestFile(__FILE__) as the first
statement to the other group functions that had neither. The 2
genuinely standalone binaries (test_job_array_sched_push.c,
test_job_array_apiserver_push.c -- each has its own int main(), not
registered via controller_test.c's TEST() macro) are untouched.
Verified: single consolidated summary now reads
"972 Tests 0 Failures 0 Ignored OK", exactly matching the
ground-truth RUN_TEST call-site count across all 83 registered
group files (976 total minus 4 belonging to the 2 standalone
binaries). Every PASS/FAIL banner now names its own true source
file. Full xce-build.sh all regression pass clean (Ok: 9, Fail: 0).
No production code touched -- test-harness plumbing only.
Desync FAILOVER re-elections by node priority (ha_election_stagger_ms /
ha_failover_stagger_fn) mirroring the startup stagger, with seed jitter and
async prevote start; allow prevote in voter roles through the dispatch gate.
Adds HA role and vote-gate tests (stagger desync by priority, prevote on dead
primary, stickiness-lapse grants).
Pre-existing uncommitted work, committed to establish a clean baseline before
ha-commit-durability implementation.
Standby sends WalAckReply via xce_reply after each successfully
applied WAL entry. ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry signature extended
with endpoint_t* and cluster_t* parameters. walackreplymsg union
arm added to RequestReply capnp schema and xce_reply_t. Error
entries skip ACK. Dispatch gate test confirms OPCode_walCatchupEntry
allowed in CTRL_STANDBY/ELECTING/INIT.

- ha_state_t.n_peers now matches raft_config_t.n_peers convention:
total cluster size (including self), consistently across both layers
- ha_start_election_async: ha->n_peers = n_peers (candidates_count)
- Convergence/counting loops: i < n_peers - 1 (skip self for standby arrays)
- Single-node: n_peers=1, threshold=0 (same behavior, clear semantics)
- ha_elect_ctx_t.n_peers unchanged (separate field for vote array sizing)
- Tests: 3-node n_peers=2->3, single-node 0->1, loop bounds updated
E2E test 6.7: 3-node cluster lifecycle verified
- Initial: ctrl-1 PRIMARY via majority convergence, no degraded mode
- Kill primary: RDHUP detected on both standbys, ctrl-2 elected at term=4
- No data loss: config tag preserved across failover
- Full ASAN build green
- Change HA_DEFAULT_COMMITTING_TIMEOUT_MS from 10000 to 60000
- committing_timeout_fn: count converged/pending standbys from
standby_converged[], log WARN with counts, then promote (degraded mode)
- Replace hardcoded 10000 in test_ha_evaluate_committing.c with macro
- Three new tests: default=60000, degrade-promote with 1/2 and 0/2 converged
- Add ha_repl_send_snapshot_hook seam in ha.c/ha.h for XCE_TESTING
- test_dispatch_repl_action_send_snapshot: verifies SEND_SNAPSHOT
decision triggers hook when standby_lsn < oldest_wal_lsn
- test_snapshot_recv_two_chunks_assembles_and_renames: verifies standby
assembles snap.part across chunks and renames on isLast=true
- test_snapshot_recv_reconnect_discards_snappart: verifies O_TRUNC
semantics on chunk_index==0 restart after reconnect
- All tests pass under ASAN
ha_stream_wal_to_standby() reads WAL from committed_lsn range, accumulates
entries to 256/64KB per batch, enqueues all via xce_request() (non-blocking).
Partial final batch sent immediately. Wired into STREAM_WAL case.
3 tests: 500-entries/2-batches, partial batch, empty range.
Fixed stale task-number comments per review.
ha_dispatch_repl_action_for_standby() calls push_config_to_standbys()
when PUSH_CONFIG decision. Hook seam for unit tests. Wired into
repl_ack_decode_and_dispatch after ha_process_standby_state.
oldest_wal_lsn=0 placeholder documented for task 3.4.
ha_evaluate_repl_action() pure function: stale tag→PUSH_CONFIG,
lsn<oldest_wal→SEND_SNAPSHOT, lsn<committed→STREAM_WAL, else CONVERGED.
5 tests. Fixed misleading stream_wal_from_zero test name per review.
Add standby_reported_tag/lsn/converged arrays to ha_state_t, sized
MAX_HA_CANDIDATES. Zero-init via existing memset in ha_init().
Unit test verifies zero-init and writability.
Task 2.1 of election-iomgr-refactor spec. Adds the new ha_state_t fields
required for the COMMITTING phase FSM, the CTRL_PRIMARY_COMMITTING role enum
value, and the committing_timeout_ms config field with its default constant.
ha_init() explicitly zero-initialises all new fields. Unit test verifies
zero-init and enum distinctness.
Requirements: 5.2, 8.1 (election-iomgr-refactor spec)
Root cause: test_heartbeat_stale_no_crash_without_primary had
heartbeat_timeout_ms=100 < heartbeat_interval_ms=3000, causing ha_init
to return -EINVAL before memset. The test ignored the return value and
called ha_fini on garbage stack memory. The watchdog_thread field
happened to hold the value 3 (from a prior stack frame), so
ha_stop_watchdog called pthread_join(3, NULL) — crash at 0x2d3
(__pthread_clockjoin_ex accessing thread-struct field at offset 0x2d0).
Fix 1 (test): valid config (interval=2000, timeout=3000). Staleness is
injected via last_heartbeat -= 10s, so timeout value was irrelevant.
Added TEST_ASSERT_EQUAL_INT check on ha_init return.
Fix 2 (ha_init): move memset before validation so ha_fini is safe to
call even after a failed init — prevents the same bug class in callers
that check ha_init's return late.
Verified: test_ha_role 11/11 PASS in both non-ASAN and ASAN builds.
- ha_do_promote(): atomic_fetch_add term, set role=PRIMARY, reset
last_received_crc to WAL_CRC_NONE (COH-5 chain restart on promotion)
- ha_do_demote(): set role=STANDBY, reset hooks_registered idempotency guard
- ha_install_sigusr1(): sigaction handler stores only atomic int —
async-signal-safe per POSIX.1-2017 §2.4.3; global g_sigusr1_ha set
once before signals are enabled
- ha_promote_to_primary() / ha_demote_to_standby() remain (void)c stubs
pending P1-5 cluster wiring
Tests: 3 new cases in test_ha_role.c
test_promote_increments_term: term > term_before, role == PRIMARY
test_demote_sets_standby_role: role reverts to STANDBY after promote+demote
test_sigusr1_sets_failover_requested: raise(SIGUSR1) sets atomic flag
Result: 100 Tests 0 Failures 0 Ignored (controller suite)
- Add ha_start_watchdog() / ha_stop_watchdog() — dedicated pthread with
nanosleep(heartbeat_interval_ms) loop; stop via atomic watchdog_stop +
pthread_join (no pthread_cancel, safe for OpenSSL)
- Add ha_check_heartbeat_nocluster() — reads role with
atomic_load_explicit(memory_order_acquire), guards on primary_host[0]=='\0',
computes elapsed_ms from CLOCK_MONOTONIC, sets failover_requested on timeout
- Update ha_fini() to call ha_stop_watchdog() before mutex destroy
- 3 new tests (TDD RED→GREEN): watchdog starts/stops, no-op when no primary,
stale heartbeat no crash; all 97 controller tests green
- Full ha.h: ctrl_role_t enum (CTRL_PRIMARY/CTRL_STANDBY), ha_config_t,
ha_state_t with _Atomic fields (term, role, applied_lsn, promotion
counters, watchdog_stop), pthread_mutex_t lock, and public API.
- endpoint_t* omitted from ha_state_t — including netio.h would pull
OpenSSL headers and risk circular deps; watchdog (P1-3) includes
netio.h directly where needed.
- ha_init validates: heartbeat_interval_ms >= 2000, heartbeat_timeout_ms
>= heartbeat_interval_ms, election_timeout_ms >= 500; returns -EINVAL
on bad config; zeros struct and sets initial role to CTRL_STANDBY.
- ha_fini destroys mutex; watchdog thread join deferred to P1-3.
- am_i_primary / ha_promote_to_primary / ha_demote_to_standby are
no-op stubs; cluster_t->ha field not yet wired (P1-5), so these avoid
incomplete-type dereferences until then.
- TDD: 5 new tests in test_ha_role.c confirmed RED before implementation,
all 5 GREEN after; all prior controller tests remain green.
