20e59d0b42 checkpoint: bug-851 root cause + raft TLA+ conformance spec family
Investigation & fixes (failover committed-job loss):
- root-cause bug-851 on an owned 3-node cluster: chaotic failover causes
  silent committed-prefix divergence (WAL hdr.term always 0; two leaders
  per term; no (term,lsn) reconcile). Evidence in repro-851/ + INVESTIGATION.
- live-validated fixes 848/849/850 (recovery-on-promotion, advertise real
  applied_lsn, persist-layer contiguity guard); add waldump WAL inspector.

Specs (strict raft.tla conformance — library owns the log):
- TLA-gap-analysis.md: impl vs raft/raft.tla, gaps G1-G6.
- raft-log-replication, raft-commit-safety, raft-sim-conformance: extend
  src/lib/raft to own log/commit/verification via callbacks (specs generated,
  cross-spec review passed).
- ha-term-safety: controller-side adapter + config marker (R1-R7); design done.
- config-upgrade-snapshot: R8 descoped here (deps entity-bearing-snapshots, bug-857).
- roadmap + buglog (851/854/857) + .wolf knowledge updated.

3b4656228e test(ha-heartbeat-committed-propagation): verify vote floor consumes heartbeat-raised committed safely (task 3.2)
Test-only: exercises the real ha_vote_self_freshness/handle_request_vote gate.
A heartbeat raise via ha_observe_heartbeat_committed lifts the floor to
max(durable=5, raised=9); candidate at 7 denied, at 9/12 granted; a lower
heartbeat never lowers it. Discriminating constants fail under either regression
(floor->durable-only or fold->min). No production/vote-path change (Req 3.2).
123/0.

d534f83e46 feat(ha-heartbeat-committed-propagation): stamp own committed+term on primary heartbeat (task 3.1)
primary_heartbeat_fn now sends xce_ha_heartbeat_req with the primary's OWN
atomic ha->term / persist.committed_lsn / committed_config_tag (NOT last_known_*),
snapshotted once per tick (Req 1.1, 3.4). XCE_TESTING seam adds a capturing
ha_heartbeat_req_hook (precedence new->legacy->real) so existing ha_nop_req_hook
liveness tests stay green; send-failure WARN + last_push_time unchanged. New test
poisons last_known_* to prove own-committed. Direct binary 119/0.

90e7179a89 feat(ha-heartbeat-committed-propagation): standby OP_nop consume branch + term-guard (task 2.2)
Append a committed-consume branch to the OP_nop handler (existing liveness/reply
byte-unchanged): ha_consume_heartbeat_committed applies the non-primary gate
(3.4) + stale-term guard (accept hb->term >= ha->term, 3.2), then delegates to
the monotonic ha_observe_heartbeat_committed (1.2). Absent body / zero / failed
gate are no-ops (4.2). No vote-floor edit — safety is the term-guard. 4 tests.

8bfa861be2 feat(ha-heartbeat-committed-propagation): add reconcile-free ha_observe_heartbeat_committed (task 2.1)
Strict-monotonic updater for a standby's learned committed position: advance
last_known_committed_lsn only when strictly greater (zero/lower no-op), set the
config tag together (tag-before-lsn release ordering for reader safety). No
ha_rejoin_reconcile, no truncation, no other mutation (Req 2.1-2.3, 3.1, 3.3).
4 revert-detecting unit tests; controller suite 0 failures.

f4327ce4f6 feat(ha-heartbeat-committed-propagation): migrate last_known_committed_config_tag to _Atomic (task 1.1)
Mirror the sibling last_known_committed_lsn: all writes release, reads acquire.
Prereq for a heartbeat-receive writer + the ctrlstatus reader to interact
safely (Req 2.3). Pure access migration, no behavior change; controller suite
0 failures.

ee30765d31 feat(controller-status): render responderTime in cmd_ctrlstatus, log-comparable format (task 6.3)
Add ctrlstatus_fmt.h (ctrlstatus_format_time_ms): renders responder_time_ms as
local YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS,mmm, byte-equivalent to the controller log prefix
(tlog/my_tlog_format) so a captured ctrlstatus lines up against ctrl-N.log.
cmd_ctrlstatus prints a responderTime line; TZ-pinned exact-string unit test.
Req 11.2, 11.3. ctrlstatus group passes.

3799bd6af4 feat(controller-status): off-primary learned committed + responder timestamp in ctrlstatus_fill (task 6.2)
Role-branch the committed sourcing: PRIMARY reports its own authoritative
persist.committed_lsn / committed_config_tag; off-primary reports the LEARNED
ha->last_known_committed_lsn / last_known_committed_config_tag instead of the
primary-only raw markers that read 0 on a standby (fixes the applied>committed
inversion). Stamp responder_time_ms from CLOCK_REALTIME for log correlation.
Read-only (Req 10.1-10.4, 11.1). 4 new TDD tests; controller suite 110/0/0.

2988682bd6 feat(xce-test-e2e-primitives): quiet wait-primary poll — suppress per-attempt joblist perror + libxce failover INFO spam
The wait-primary probe loop EXPECTS repeated failure until a primary serves, so it
no longer spams the console: joblist_query gains a quiet flag (the poll passes
quiet=1) and the client log threshold is raised to warn for the loop duration,
restored to the user's level on every exit path. Interactive joblist + the
assertions keep their diagnostics (quiet=0).

64ab210cbf fix(ha-wal-replication): apply_wal_entry must not own the WAL CRC chain (bug-778)
On the standby replicated-apply path, ha_apply_single_entry wrote the entry via
persist_wal_write_replicated (which correctly set the self-computed CRC chain
link p->last_crc), then called apply_wal_entry with a SYNTHETIC header whose
crc=0. apply_wal_entry's `p->last_crc = hdr->crc` clobbered the chain link with
0, so every subsequent replicated write stamped prev_crc=0 on disk. The on-disk
CRC chain broke at the second replicated entry — invisible while live (standbys
serve in-memory state) but fatal on COLD RESTART: replay hit the break, returned
RECOVER_TRUNCATED, recovered only the config prefix, and lost all committed jobs
(joblist=0). The sticky truncated verdict then drove a promotion-fence
availability wedge (bug-777) when every survivor was truncated.

Fix — single ownership of the WAL header + CRC chain:
- apply_wal_entry is now LOGICAL entity-restore only: signature
  (p, type, lsn, payload, payload_len); no header. It advances the current_lsn
  high-water (monotonic) but NEVER touches p->last_crc.
- The physical layer is the sole owner of the CRC chain: persist_wal_write_-
  replicated on the live path, replay_wal/persist_recover on recovery.
- ha_apply_single_entry drops the fabricated header and passes entry fields
  directly. The persist_recover replay caller is updated to the new signature.

Verified: new RED->GREEN test test_replicated_apply_chain_survives_cold_restart
(drives the real ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry path, cold-replays -> RECOVER_CLEAN,
all N recovered); controller suite 0 failures; 3-node rolling-SIGKILL soak on a
real ext2/3 fs now passes 5/5 (was wedge+loss at round 3); full cold restart
recovers all 6 committed jobs (was 0) with CLEAN verdicts and a normal election.

59d9df246c fix(ha-commit-durability)!: controller never self-terminates — loud non-promotable fence replaces recovery FATAL/abort
Per design invariant (a controller exits only on crash or admin kill), replace the
self-abort recovery terminal (tasks 3.3/4.3/4.4) with a loud, permanent, non-promotable
fence that stays alive and keeps retrying catch-up (self-heals on peer return; no manual
admin recovery). Records the never-self-terminate invariant as project-wide guidance in
src/controller/CLAUDE.md + .kiro/steering/ha-async-io.md.

Adds HA role and vote-gate tests (stagger desync by priority, prevote on dead
primary, stickiness-lapse grants).

Pre-existing uncommitted work, committed to establish a clean baseline before
ha-commit-durability implementation.

8c11655e53 fix(persist): interruptible fsync_worker sleep so persist_stop joins promptly
fsync_worker slept the full wal_sync_ms in one uninterruptible nanosleep()
before re-checking fsync_stop. persist_stop sets the flag and immediately
pthread_join()s, so the join blocked until the in-flight sleep returned —
up to a full wal_sync_ms per teardown. Tests set wal_sync_ms=5000 ("slow
fsync — no races"), so each persist_stop cost ~5s; across the ~7 suites
that use it the cumulative teardown time blew past the 300s controller-test
meson cap, killing the suite with SIGTERM.

Replace the nanosleep with pthread_cond_timedwait on a new fsync_mutex/
fsync_cond (added to persist_t, init in persist_init, destroyed in
persist_fini). persist_stop now sets fsync_stop and signals fsync_cond
under fsync_mutex before joining, so the worker wakes immediately. fdatasync
still runs under p->lock, released before re-acquiring fsync_mutex — no lock
nesting. The "commit: WAIT deadline expired" log lines were unrelated
intentional negative tests (50-300ms), not the cause.

Full controller suite now completes in ~10s (was >300s TIMEOUT); 0 failures.

Logged as bug-604.

47f733891b fix(ha-prevote): make PreVote denial log-reason match the eligibility gate order exactly
The cluster.c denial-reason elimination ordered catch_up before fresh_heartbeat,
disagreeing with raft_cb_vote_eligible (which checks fresh-heartbeat-on-STANDBY
before catch-up). In the rare STANDBY catch-up + fresh-heartbeat overlap the log
could report catch_up while the gate denied on fresh_heartbeat. Expose the pure
read predicate ha_heartbeat_is_fresh and mirror the gate's exact order so the
logged reason can no longer disagree with the actual denial. Decision unchanged;
log-string fidelity only. prevote/vote-gate/failover-prevote suites green.

22fa753fa6 test(ha-prevote): genuine-failover, re-attach, and liveness-rearm scenarios (task 5.3)
Three scenario tests (zero production change): a stale-heartbeat standby GRANTS
(grant<->deny flip vs 5.2) and the won round advances to CTRL_ELECTING (PreVote
does not block legitimate failover); a heartbeat mid-round cancels and re-attaches
as standby with term unchanged; a lost round re-arms liveness and a later genuine
failure still wins (reusable, not one-shot).

86ac7c4863 test(ha-prevote): frozen-then-resumed no-op scenario (task 5.2)
Two-angle scenario test (zero production change): a healthy PRIMARY and a
fresh-heartbeat STANDBY both DENY a higher-prospective-term preVoteRequest
without adopting the term or demoting; and a resumed standby whose round both
peers deny gets no majority -> stays CTRL_STANDBY/FOLLOWER, term byte-for-byte
unchanged, liveness re-armed. Regresses if the disruptive-server bug returns.

6d22f2eb1a feat(ha-prevote): route preVoteReply over real transport to the candidate tally (task 5.1)
peer_ctrl_msg_handler gains a CTRL_STANDBY + pre_vote_in_progress branch that
decodes an incoming preVoteReply (no term adoption) and feeds it to
pre_vote_reply_dispatch with the absolute peer index, paralleling the real-vote
reply path. Gives pre_vote_reply_dispatch its production caller (drops the used
attribute). STANDBY-no-round still drops; ELECTING/PRIMARY routing unchanged.
PreVote now drives rounds to a decision end-to-end over the wire.
