Rewire replay_wal()'s per-entry apply call from apply_wal_entry() to
apply_committed_entry() (task 2.2's shared dispatch seam), so restart
replay and the future live commit-advance pump (task 6.1) both
produce materialized state deterministically from the committed log.
apply_wal_entry() is not retired -- it remains ha.c's live standby
catch-up/replicated-apply dispatch, untouched.
Documents a real hazard: replay now fires AFTER_EVENT hooks for the
full post-checkpoint WAL range on every restart, including entries
already applied+notified in a prior process life. Traced and
confirmed inert today for both hook consumers (scheduler registers
post-boot, apiserver gates notify on a connected endpoint empty at
boot); flagged in tasks.md and in-line at the call site for
re-verification before tasks 4.1/6.1/6.2/6.3 make this path broadly
live.
Add apply_committed_entry(persist_t*, wal_type, lsn, payload, len) in
persist.c/persist.h as the single seam that turns a committed WAL
entry into an in-memory mutation plus its post-mutation notification
hook, covering job submit, job-state facts, queue control, and
worker control. Job-state facts route through 2.1's guard-only
apply_job_update_transition() core and fire a generic
HOOK_DETAIL_JOB_UPDATE, not per-type hooks — the wire format
(wal_jobstate_t {jobid, state}) cannot supply what the type-specific
cores/hooks require. This is a real, documented deviation from
design.md's per-type dispatch wording; tasks.md's Implementation
Notes flags it as unresolved and blocking for whoever wires this
into a live path (4.1/6.2/6.3).
Not yet wired into any live call site (replay wiring is 2.3).
commit_resolve_pending_above(ce, lsn_floor, rc) fails every registered
continuation for lsn > lsn_floor, reusing commit_resolve()'s existing
exactly-once/idempotent guarantee (no parallel bookkeeping path).
Truncation: a new on_truncate/truncate_cb_ctx callback on persist_t
(same inversion-of-control shape as the existing on_durable_advance
hook) fires from persist_truncate_wal_above after releasing p->lock,
only when entries were actually removed. This one wrapper covers all
three real truncation call sites: raft_cb_become_leader's
post-election truncate, the library's on_truncate_from
conflict-reconcile, and ha_demotion_convergence_fn's post-demotion
truncate.
Demotion: raft_cb_become_follower calls
commit_resolve_pending_above(&c->commit, 0, -XCE_ERR_STANDBY) --
lsn_floor=0 fails everything, since a demoted node can never
authoritatively confirm anything still pending (CP posture).
Without this, a demoted or truncated node would leave any pending
async command permanently unresolved -- the requester would simply
never get a reply, worse than today's bounded-timeout behavior.
Also closes bug-1407 (pre-existing test_config_repl flake, unrelated
to this feature) -- confirmed fixed as a side effect of prior tasks
in this series, 70/70 passing across 3 independent runs.
Chain of fixes needed to get --force-snapshot soak to a real live PASS
(raft-ha-core-safety task 5.10a / ha-entity-snapshots task 7.1):
1. WAL segment rotation was gated on a hardcoded 64MB compile-time
constant; trim_wal_segments() never deletes the active (currently-open)
segment. At soak job counts a segment never rotated, so nothing was
ever physically trimmable and ha_evaluate_repl_action always chose
STREAM_WAL over SEND_SNAPSHOT for an empty-rejoining node. Fixed by
threading a wal_segment_bytes override through persist_config_t
(mirrors the --max-wal-records pattern: config.h default, persist.h
setter, persist.c 3 usage sites + minimum-floor enforcement, 6-point
CLI wiring through main.c/myconf.h/myapp.c/cluster.c) plus a new
--wal-segment-bytes CLI flag. run-ha-soak.sh's --force-snapshot mode
now sets WAL_SEGMENT_BYTES=4096 to force real rotation at soak scale.
2. This unmasked a genuine heap-use-after-free in INVOKE_MSG_HANDLER
(include/netio.h): the macro calls ep->msg_handler(ep) synchronously
(not via the vtask dispatcher, so the bug-1298 vtask ref/unref pairing
doesn't cover it) then writes ep->fsm_in.pkt = NULL. A stale vote-reply
handler chain (raft_on_vote_reply -> raft_cb_become_follower ->
endpoint_unref) could drop the endpoint's last ref and free it inside
the handler call, so the trailing write hit freed memory. This is the
first-ever live exercise of a node receiving a snapshot transfer while
mid-election. Fixed by holding a ref across the synchronous call, same
pattern task 5.8 established for the async path.
With both fixes: --force-snapshot soak now PASSES live (committed
divergence=0, job_loss=0, confirmed real "HA: snapshot" install on the
restarted node) — first genuine live proof of this scenario. 3-round
--chaotic regression clean. Full 217-test controller suite green
before/after every fix in the chain.
Builds on the delaymgr starvation fix (b9ad018) and walcompare
checkpoint-floor fix (f3c86a6) from earlier in this investigation.
Adds checkpointTerm (@6, append-only) to the SnapshotTransfer wire
message. The leader stamps it via persist_entry_term(p, checkpoint_lsn)
when sending a snapshot; the standby reconciles it into its own
per-LSN term index (persist_reconcile_checkpoint_term) right after
persist_load_snapshot succeeds, before applied_lsn advances. This
authoritatively overwrites any stale local term a divergent
pre-snapshot entry left at the checkpoint LSN, closing the gap task
3.1's RED test proved (Expected 7 Was 3 -> now passes). Transport
stays persist_t-free; the reconcile lives in persist.c per the
existing dependency direction. Decode is auto-generated via capnp
mapname; only the hand-rolled encode path (request.c/typemap.h, needed
for the raw snapshot payload) required a matching manual update.
test_ha_core_safety 25/0, test_config_repl 66/0, no ASAN reports.
persist_recover's local snapshot load passed NULL for out_entities_restored,
so a rolling-upgrade restart against a pre-feature checkpoint had no
observability parity with the wire receive path's (task 6.1) INFO log.
Mirror the same conditional logging here; no behavior change, WAL replay
in Step 3 still applies unconditionally either way.
Live-verified in a 3-node cluster: planted a hand-crafted 16-byte legacy
sentinel as ctrl-1's own checkpoint file, restarted all 3 — no crash, INFO
log fired, ctrl-1 was elected primary serving the full 37-job list, and
walcompare confirmed all 3 members' committed prefixes (LSN 1..49) are
byte-identical.
Replaces the naive task-5.1 stopgap with the real restore contract:
detects legacy vs entity-bearing checkpoints by remaining file size;
restores every job then every queue status via restore_job/
restore_queue_state, in file order, with bounds-checked length-prefixed
reads; only after every entity restores successfully does
current_lsn/checkpoint_lsn commit to the checkpoint's position. Every
failure path (bounds check, decode, restore error, unrecognized
format_version) returns before that single commit point -- position is
provably untouched on failure, never partially advanced.
Also fixes the pre-existing restore_job decode leak (job.c): job_init
deep-copies submit (never nulled) and MOVE_PTRs allocs/pidinfo/
pend_reasons (nulled on the one path that runs) -- free_Job(&j) is safe
unconditionally on every reachable return path (EEXIST early-return,
create_job success, create_job failure), verified against the exact
generated free_*_ptr null-check guards.
Two pre-existing test_config_repl.c wire-protocol tests needed their
synthetic garbage snapshot bodies updated to a well-formed empty-entity
tail, since load_snapshot now genuinely parses past the legacy header
(previously ignored); their actual assertions (chunk-reassembly
correctness) are unchanged.
This is the exact function/contract that caused task 2.2's rejection
(position advancing before restore validated). Independent review
traced the memory-safety fix through the generated capnp code field-by-
field, confirmed the test_config_repl.c change doesn't weaken any
assertion, and confirmed restore_queue_state's ENOENT-aborts-the-whole-
checkpoint behavior is faithful to design.md's unconditional contract
(flagged as a watch-item for task 7.1's soak, not a defect).

Extends persist_load_snapshot's public signature with an
out_entities_restored bool*, per design.md's documented contract. The
static load_snapshot function -- the real restore logic -- is completely
untouched (still today's watermark-only implementation, byte-identical
to before this task); only a thin wrapper was added that naively maps
*out_entities_restored = (rc==0), deliberately scaffolding so the 3 new
RED tests fail for genuine reasons rather than accidentally passing.
ha_handle_snapshot_chunk's sole call site gets a mechanical
declare-and-pass update -- confirmed inert, never reads the new
out-param (task 6.1's job).
Three tests against persist_load_snapshot directly (unlike prior tasks'
tests, which deliberately stayed on the raw-byte-parsing side to avoid
this exact function): restore-before-advance (fails at the job-lookup
assertion -- nothing is ever restored today), corrupted-entity-leaves-
position-unchanged (fails at rc!=0 -- today's code ignores the corrupted
section entirely, since load_snapshot never reads past the legacy
header), legacy-file-reports-position-only (fails at entities_restored==
false -- the naive wrapper claims restoration for every rc==0 case,
including legacy files).
This is the exact function/call site that caused task 2.2's rejection
(a live position-advances-before-restore-validates hazard). Independent
review verified load_snapshot's body is byte-identical to commit
d52eb94, the wrapper does nothing beyond the naive mapping, and ha.c's
change never reads the new out-param anywhere -- no repeat of that
mistake here.

rotate_snapshots now parses each candidate file's LSN and skips deletion
via a new snapshot_lsn_in_flight() check against
p->cluster->ha.snapshot_inflight_lsn[] (task 4.1) before unlinking --
protected files are retried on the next rotation pass once the transfer
completes and the LSN clears.
Checks LSN directly (nonzero + matches) rather than gating on
snapshot_inflight[]==1 first, per task 4.1's own note: the LSN clears
before the flag in every completion/failure path, so a stale flag=1 can
momentarily coexist with an already-cleared LSN=0. A checkpoint LSN is
never 0, so this is race-free without needing the flag at all.
p->cluster==NULL (standalone lib-level tests) means no HA layer exists to
protect anything.
Task 4.2's RED rotation-guard test now passes; full regression sweep
(test_persist_checkpoint, test_persist_hooks, test_commit_barrier_reply,
test_commit_durability, test_e2e_hooks, test_hooks, test_config_repl,
test_ha_liveness) all clean. Both controller_unit_test and production
xce_controller build clean; nm confirms only the real production helper
(snapshot_lsn_in_flight) appears, no test-only symbols leaked in.
Executed directly (no subagent dispatch) per the hybrid execution-mode
decision.

write_snapshot replaces the queue_count=0 placeholder with a real
collect_queue_frames helper: enumerates every queue in the live table
under nested table+per-entity RTTI_LOCK_READ (no retention filter --
table presence already implies config-provisioned existence, unlike
jobs), writes each queue's (name, status) as a plain fixed record (no
capnp -- matches restore_queue_state's exact contract). Any failure
anywhere still discards the whole checkpoint, including any
already-collected job frames, no partial file at the final path.
Entirely contained to persist.c -- load_snapshot and persist.h remain
byte-identical to before this task, honoring the boundary lesson task 2.2
established (queue restoration stays task 5.2's scope).

write_snapshot now Cap'n-Proto-encodes every retained job under nested
table+per-entity RTTI_LOCK_READ (table lock alone does not exclude a
concurrent per-entity writer -- design.md's central correctness finding),
appends length-prefixed job frames after a new format_version marker, and
fixes a previously-unchecked fdatasync return. Any failure anywhere in the
path (encode, write, sync) discards the whole checkpoint -- no partial
file at the final path, proven by a real mid-encode-loop fault-injection
test (forces one specific job's encode to fail among N, asserts nothing
survives).
Also fixed two pre-existing bugs in task 1.1's test fixture: terminal-state
seeded jobs need a non-zero finish_time or job_should_retain's retention
window silently excludes them from any checkpoint; the fixture needs
xstring_table_init or every seeded job's submit/start_info silently
decodes as NULL.
Round 1 of this task also touched load_snapshot/persist.h to make the
round-trip tests pass end-to-end, but review caught a live hazard: it
advanced current_lsn/checkpoint_lsn BEFORE the entity-decode loop ran, so
a decode failure still left the position advanced -- reachable today
through the unmodified ha_handle_snapshot_chunk production path, not
hypothetical. Remediated by fully reverting load_snapshot/persist.h to
byte-identical pre-task-2.2 state and rewriting the round-trip tests to
parse write_snapshot's raw on-disk bytes directly (read_Job/decode_Job)
instead of round-tripping through persist_load_snapshot -- proves the
write side without depending on load_snapshot, which stays task 5.2's
scope entirely, not started here.

raft-apply-decoupling item #1 (down payment). xce_run_hooks returns only the
LAST-registered hook's rc, so a later JOB AFTER_EVENT subscriber (sched/
apiserver) returning 0 clobbered persist_job_hook_fun's commit -ETIMEDOUT.
handle_jobsubmit then replied 'jobsubmit ok' for an entry that never reached
majority, and a new-term leader legally discarded it (committed-job-loss,
Commit Durability violation).
- persist.c/.h: new persist_submit_wal_and_commit(p, jlist) — the explicit raft
step (WAL append + majority-commit barrier) returning the commit verdict
directly. persist_job_hook_fun's WAL_MODE_WAIT branch is now a no-op.
- job.c handle_jobsubmit: call the explicit step, read commit_rc DIRECTLY,
reject on <0 before firing the now notification-only AFTER hook
(canonical commit -> notify -> reply).
- tests: +test_job_hook_new_is_notify_only regression pin; 4 hook tests
relocated to drive the explicit step. persist_hooks 19/0, e2e_hooks 3/0,
commit_barrier_reply 22/0, commit_durability 38/0.
Proven: 10-round chaotic soak committed_job_loss 5 -> 0 (same election code).
Residual soak FAILs (divergence catch-up lag + a round-4 election-escalation
tail) are NOT job loss — tracked as task 5.10.

Part B (LIVE, default-ON): trim_wal_segments now bounds WAL-segment deletion
by repl_trim_lsn(&p->repl, active_seg_lsn) = min(active segment LSN, every
active standby acked_lsn, every valid disconnected-slot last_disconnected_lsn),
after repl_expire_disconnect_slots ages out stale slot guards. floor <=
active_seg_lsn structurally, so the guard can only preserve more segments,
never delete one a live standby still needs — closes the bug-795/828
trim-vs-cursor race for connected/recently-disconnected standbys (bug-1147
stopgap; empty/cursor=0 join still needs entity-bearing snapshots).
Part A (DORMANT, g_drive_async_snapshot_offload default OFF): ha_snapshot_send_
dispatch routes HA_REPL_SEND_SNAPSHOT inline (flag OFF — byte-for-byte legacy,
on io_worker) or to slowlane_submit+snapshot_lane_fn (flag ON). Send body
factored into ha_snapshot_do_send. Per-peer single-flight via
ha_state_t.snapshot_inflight[] CAS + slowlane key; in-flight flag cleared on
all four terminal paths, mirroring the reconnect offload (task 2.1).
Lands dormant like task 3.1: snapshot_lane_fn borrows a standby endpoint it
does not own, so flag-ON would race io_worker RDHUP teardown (cross-thread UAF,
bug-1197 family). Flag OFF keeps send+teardown serialized on the io_worker.
Task 3.4 is the single gate that flips both this and the peerctrl flag ON after
establishing endpoint-lifetime discipline; bug-1198 stays open by design until
then. The offload flag was initially authored default-ON (would ship the UAF)
and corrected to OFF in ha.c and the ha.h accessor doc (bug-1210).
Tests (controller 196/0, 0 new leaks): test_snapshot_offload_runs_on_lane,

test_trim_guard_preserves_standby_segments,

Clean failover was truncating committed jobs because the post-election
safe-commit-from-votes computation was dead: vote_reply_dispatch decoded each
granting voter's advertised peerLastLogLsn but discarded it, so ha_compute_safe
_committed_lsn saw only the self-vote (the 'from 1 granted voters' fingerprint)
and truncated to self_lsn.
Part 1: vote_reply_dispatch now records the granting voter's (lsn,tag,grant) into
ctx->votes[] via a record-only ha_record_vote_reply seam (no double-promotion;
raft_on_vote_reply stays the sole production promotion driver) — so safe-commit
reflects the true voted majority.
Part 2: the candidate/voter advertise the real DURABLE (fsync'd) tip; persist_wal
_write_replicated advances durable_lsn after its fail-loud inline fdatasync.
Reviewer-verified SAFE (advertises only durable positions; safe-commit bounded by
the durable majority, preserving more committed entries, never marking a
non-majority-durable LSN safe). 177 unit tests; new test_ha_vote_gate + election
tests green.
PARTIAL: does NOT yet make the live clean-failover pass. A deeper slice of
bug-828/795 remains — a catch-up'd standby still under-advertises its durable
position in the live run (the documented architectural catch-up/durability gap),
so a job-less node can still win and truncate. Tracked for a dedicated effort.
Closes bug-990: the live replicator repl_broadcast wire-encoded term=0
(entry.term was never set), so standbys persisted hdr.term=0 and took the
legacy direct-apply path instead of the library (term,lsn) intake. Now the
live broadcast and catch-up streamer carry the leader's real term + AE prev
tuple; ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry routes every term-carrying entry through
raft_on_append_entries_request -> on_persist_entry (leader term stamped),
retiring the term-0 direct-apply. Standbys now persist the leader's real term
and reconcile by (term,lsn); the live commit chain is end-to-end.
848/849/850 + persist-before-ACK + commit-barrier + bug-960 preserved.
Proven at integration level; the definitive live STRICT_TERM failover run is
env-blocked here (bug-924 overlayfs) and recommended on a real fs.
Wires do_upgrade_config_with_bytes to append WAL_CONFIG_MARKER through
raft_log_append (live term-stamped consensus record), demotes committed_config_tag
to a non-authoritative cache, and derives the committed config from the latest
committed marker. Preserves the derive across checkpoint compaction via an optional,
backward-compatible config-ref tail in the snapshot sentinel.
on_get_entry_term → persist_entry_term (recorded term, 0=absent, legacy-0→1; caveat
documented per 1.3 review). on_truncate_from → persist_truncate_wal_above(p, index-1)
(delete LSN>=index), returns rc for library/leader retry; non-promotable fence intact;
replaces the committed-boundary heuristic on the library-driven path. New
truncate_term_index_locked keeps the in-memory per-LSN term index consistent on both
truncate paths (under lock, cutoff-aligned) → no stale-term read after truncation.
3 tests, reviewer APPROVED, per-group 0 failures.
persist_set_term sets the live election term so appends stamp hdr.term (fixes the
G1 term-0 stamping); replay_wal builds an in-memory per-LSN term index (freed in
persist_fini, no on-disk change); persist_entry_term reads it back (0=absent).
Legacy-0 -> WAL_LEGACY_TERM=1 at read-back only (raw 0 retained so present-legacy-0
is distinguishable from absent). 40-byte wal_entry_hdr_t preserved (value fix, R1.7).
5 new tests (test_term_safety_adapter.c); reviewer APPROVED. Feeds task 2.2.
All controller test groups report 0 failures; the meson full-suite timeout is the
bug-924 overlayfs /tmp fdatasync artifact, not this task.
On the standby replicated-apply path, ha_apply_single_entry wrote the entry via
persist_wal_write_replicated (which correctly set the self-computed CRC chain
link p->last_crc), then called apply_wal_entry with a SYNTHETIC header whose
crc=0. apply_wal_entry's `p->last_crc = hdr->crc` clobbered the chain link with
0, so every subsequent replicated write stamped prev_crc=0 on disk. The on-disk
CRC chain broke at the second replicated entry — invisible while live (standbys
serve in-memory state) but fatal on COLD RESTART: replay hit the break, returned
RECOVER_TRUNCATED, recovered only the config prefix, and lost all committed jobs
(joblist=0). The sticky truncated verdict then drove a promotion-fence
availability wedge (bug-777) when every survivor was truncated.
Fix — single ownership of the WAL header + CRC chain:
- apply_wal_entry is now LOGICAL entity-restore only: signature
(p, type, lsn, payload, payload_len); no header. It advances the current_lsn
high-water (monotonic) but NEVER touches p->last_crc.
- The physical layer is the sole owner of the CRC chain: persist_wal_write_-
replicated on the live path, replay_wal/persist_recover on recovery.
- ha_apply_single_entry drops the fabricated header and passes entry fields
directly. The persist_recover replay caller is updated to the new signature.
Verified: new RED->GREEN test test_replicated_apply_chain_survives_cold_restart
(drives the real ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry path, cold-replays -> RECOVER_CLEAN,
all N recovered); controller suite 0 failures; 3-node rolling-SIGKILL soak on a
real ext2/3 fs now passes 5/5 (was wedge+loss at round 3); full cold restart
recovers all 6 committed jobs (was 0) with CLEAN verdicts and a normal election.

Per design invariant (a controller exits only on crash or admin kill), replace the
self-abort recovery terminal (tasks 3.3/4.3/4.4) with a loud, permanent, non-promotable
fence that stays alive and keeps retrying catch-up (self-heals on peer return; no manual
admin recovery). Records the never-self-terminate invariant as project-wide guidance in
src/controller/CLAUDE.md + .kiro/steering/ha-async-io.md.
fsync_worker slept the full wal_sync_ms in one uninterruptible nanosleep()
before re-checking fsync_stop. persist_stop sets the flag and immediately
pthread_join()s, so the join blocked until the in-flight sleep returned —
up to a full wal_sync_ms per teardown. Tests set wal_sync_ms=5000 ("slow
fsync — no races"), so each persist_stop cost ~5s; across the ~7 suites
that use it the cumulative teardown time blew past the 300s controller-test
meson cap, killing the suite with SIGTERM.
Replace the nanosleep with pthread_cond_timedwait on a new fsync_mutex/
fsync_cond (added to persist_t, init in persist_init, destroyed in
persist_fini). persist_stop now sets fsync_stop and signals fsync_cond
under fsync_mutex before joining, so the worker wakes immediately. fdatasync
still runs under p->lock, released before re-acquiring fsync_mutex — no lock
nesting. The "commit: WAIT deadline expired" log lines were unrelated
intentional negative tests (50-300ms), not the cause.
Full controller suite now completes in ~10s (was >300s TIMEOUT); 0 failures.
Logged as bug-604.
A standby applied replicated WAL entries via apply_wal_entry (the replay/
in-memory path) which restores entities + advances applied_lsn but NEVER writes
the entry to the standby's WAL segment. The standby then ACKed (feeding the
primary's commit majority) without persisting — a Raft durability violation:
entries counted toward a commit could be lost on standby restart, and standby
WAL files stayed empty (contradicting steering: log[i] = WAL segments for every
node). This is why ctrl-2/ctrl-3 received + acked the streamed own-term NOOP yet
kept empty seg-*.wal.
Fix: new persist_wal_write_replicated(p, lsn, type, payload, len) writes the
entry to the local WAL at the PRIMARY's lsn (no lsn-reassignment), with a
self-consistent intra-segment CRC chain (the streamed entry carries no term/crc;
each node chains independently and recovery validates intra-segment), fdatasyncs
for durability, advances current_lsn = max(current_lsn, lsn+1), rotates segments,
and does NOT re-broadcast. Wired into ha_apply_single_entry as
persist(durable) -> apply(in-memory) -> ACK; on persist failure: no apply, no ACK
(a standby never ACKs an entry it didn't persist). Covers single + batch
catch-up; OPCode_replEntry has no separate apply path (allow-list only), so all
live WAL apply now persists. Dedup guard (lsn+1<=current_lsn) makes re-streams
idempotent while still ACKing.
TDD: standby write -> drop persist_t -> reopen + persist_recover replays it
(single, 3-entry crc chain, post-dedup); checkpoint/oversized rejected. Full
controller suite green under ASAN; persist_wal_async / recovery / truncation /
streamer / wire untouched.
Root cause (found via live 3-node E2E + a verification test): lsn was 0-based
(hdr.lsn = current_lsn++ from current_lsn=0), and 0 was overloaded as a
sentinel, causing three cold-start defects on a freshly-promoted leader:
- the first WAL entry (own-term promotion NOOP at lsn 0) was structurally
uncommittable: commit_advance_locked only stores when cand>cur and
committed_lsn starts at 0, so lsn 0 can never advance it;
- commit_set_writable_lsn(noop_lsn=0) set writable_lsn=0, which wait_done
reads as 'gate off' — the own-term safety gate was a no-op on the first leader;
- bug-543 (WAL hole): ha_stream_wal_to_standby filters hdr.lsn>standby_lsn;
a fresh empty standby reports standby_lsn=0 (ambiguous 'empty' vs 'has lsn 0'),
so lsn 0 failed 0>0 and was dropped -> non-contiguous standby WAL.
Fix: a fresh persist store initializes current_lsn=1, reserving lsn 0 as the
none/empty sentinel. The first real entry is lsn 1 -> committable (0->1),
writable_lsn=1 -> gate effective, and standby_lsn=0 unambiguously means 'empty'
so catch-up streams from the first entry with no hole. persist_recover is
data-driven (current_lsn=max(hdr.lsn+1)), so existing on-disk WALs and non-fresh
recovery are unaffected; the change only sets the base for brand-new stores.
No wire/capnp change.
Verification: test_coldstart_lsn0 drives the real commit engine + real streamer
and proves H1 (first entry commits 0->1), H3 (gate effective + blocks when
committed<writable), H4 (empty-standby catch-up is contiguous [1,2], control
standby_lsn=1 gets only [2]). Full controller suite green under ASAN. Tests that
relied on the lsn-0 base were shifted (several strengthened); commit.c /
config_repl.c / ha.c / wire format untouched.
Owning specs: ha-commit-engine / ha-wal-replication / persist. Follow-up:
sweep stale lsn-0 comments (repl.c:429-436, persist.c:1055-1075/1240-1243/1296).
7 cases: two covered short-circuits, timeout with committed_lsn
unmoved, covering-ACK release, sync_timeout_ms fallback (bounded both
directions), n_peers=1 standalone, NOT_READY passthrough via cap
saturation. Watermark resolved to current_lsn - 1 (design's literal
phrasing unsatisfiable per persist.h:71 invariant) with off-by-one
killing power both ways. 15 tests / 7 RED; suite baseline zero.
Verified table implemented (STOP/RESUME/UPDATE/FAIL RETAIN per
supersession; WORKER detail switch; CHECKPOINT LOCAL); unknown type =
ERROR + XCE_TESTING abort + production RETAIN fallback. All three
hooks route through wal_hook_append_classified (zero bare async
appends); RETAIN registers with the engine lock-free; facts propagate
local append rc only. 8/8 group tests green; full suite 465/465.
cluster_t embeds commit_engine_t; init in cluster_init_phase2 after the
vtaskmgr guard (idempotence-guarded — phase2 can run twice), wiring
repl_set_commit_engine + ha.repl back-pointer before any standby can
register; fini after iomgr/vtask shutdown. persist_wal_sync_append
passes written_lsn; engine-wired path drops -ENODEV and the
committed_lsn store (engine owns advancement); LSN-0 first-entry
routes to legacy per the accepted interim. p2 -ENODEV pin updated to
the Req 6.3 contract. 34/34 + 6/6 green through honest delegation;
census exactly at the 3 validated baselines; production binary links.
