Stack overflows on user input:
- bug-1702 jobrun -m: host segment strncpy'd into a 256-byte buffer
unbounded (ASAN stack-buffer-overflow); now cmdutil_split_host_tasks()
refuses an over-long host.
- bug-1703 jobsub -n: min strncpy'd into a 64-byte buffer; now
cmdutil_parse_ntasks() parses in place, 1 <= min <= max.
- resupdate's 16-entry vals[] had no bound either; a 17th -n overflowed.
Wrong or silent results:
- bug-1574 resupdate type/model: set_resval() had no string case, left the
entry's name uninitialized, and crashed the encoder. Moved to
resval_typeresolve.c as resval_fill(), which fills every type.
- bug-1705 jobsub -x was overwritten (and leaked) by the default exdata;
cmdutil_default_exdata() only fills an unset one. jobsub's
execuser/exechome/execcwd copies leaked on every call.
- bug-1707 a trailing -n without -v was dropped silently; resupdate also
returned 0 after its RPC failed and "succeeded" with nothing to send.
- bug-1708 jobkill -s SIGKILL became signal 0 and was sent.
- bug-1709 jobinfo exited 0 with no -j, a malformed -j, or no hits.
- bug-1710 hello -c 0 sent nothing and reported success.
- bug-1712 a duplicate -v was reported as "no res name found".
- bug-1777 workerlist showed join-time maxmem/maxswap/maxtmp, not the
effective values (hosts.yaml overrides) the reply already carries in
resvals_to_sched and the scheduler uses.
- bug-1793 join's maxswap/maxtmp defaults were 1 KB / 2 KB in bytes; now
1 GiB / 2 GiB, and -m/-s/-t no longer overflow atoi() above 2 GB.
Error reporting and leaks:
- bug-1796 RPC failures printed perror() of a stale errno ("Connection
refused" / "Invalid argument" / "Inappropriate ioctl for device" for
the same failure). cmdutil_rpc_error() prints the RPC's own code
(E_XCE_* included) at all 19 sites.
- bug-1797 qctrl leaked the queue name on the RPC-error path; repeated
-q/-h leaked the earlier copy.
New src/harness/cmdutil.c (+ cmdutil_unit_test, 14 cases); 9 new
test_test_cli.c cases, 8 RED on the old xce_test; new resval_fill,
worker_effective_attr and join-default tests (join ones RED on the old
join_worker_args.c). Harness suite 6/6 (asan), harness_unit_test 141/0.

Adds ctrlstatus_peer_status_str (mirrors ctrlstatus_role_str's
convention: 0=unknown/1=ok/2=catching-up/3=dead, safe default fallback
for any other code) and extends cmd_ctrlstatus's per-controller print
line to render it alongside each configured controller's existing
name:address, completing the CtrlPeer.status wire field added in task
8.1 and sourced in task 8.2.

Live 3-node E2E validation (task 7.6) found that cmd_ctrlstatus's
electedTerm/electedAt lines (task 7.5) gated on NULLSTR(primaryName),
which is unconditionally empty on every non-primary responder in this
build (ctrlstatus_fill only self-reports the primary's own name --
ha->primary_host is vestigial, a pre-existing Req 2 behavior). This made
electedTerm/electedAt print "unknown" on every standby, forever, even
though elected_at_ms was correctly, non-zero, and convergently populated
the whole time (term/committedLsn/appliedLsn, sourced the same
unconditional way, DID correctly display and converge on the same query).
Fix: gate on status->elected_at_ms == 0 instead -- the field stays
exactly 0 until a real promotion stamps it (either road) or a heartbeat
carries a learned value from an actual primary, unlike term (which can
legitimately bump from mere vote/candidacy activity before any primary
is elected). ctrlstatus_fill itself is untouched; this is purely a
cmd_ctrlstatus display-layer correction.
Also corrects design.md's "Design Delta -- Requirement 12" Locked
Decision 3 (and its dependent traceability/service-contract text) to
document this live-E2E finding, mirroring the spec's existing delta
convention (Req 10/11's own live-E2E correction).

cmd_ctrlstatus (src/harness/test.c) now prints electedTerm/electedAt
right after the Primary: line, gated on the same NULLSTR(primaryName)
"unknown" check that line already uses. electedTerm prints the existing
term field verbatim (no new wire field, per design's Locked Decision 1);
electedAt reuses the existing ctrlstatus_format_time_ms formatter
already used for responderTime, falling back to "unknown" on a NULL
format result. No leakage of a stale term/elected_at_ms when no primary
is known.

Every cmd_* REPL handler in test.c/join_worker_args.c reset flag parsing
with `optind = 1;` only. glibc's getopt_long only fully reinitializes its
internal scan state (nextchar/first_nonopt/last_nonopt) when optind==0, or
on the process's very first getopt_long() call ever -- optind=1 alone
leaves that state stale for every call after the first. Since xce_test's
REPL dispatches many independent cmd_*() calls per process, a command
whose parse ends on a short no-argument flag (`qctrl -a`, `hostctrl -o`)
left state that corrupted the NEXT unrelated command's parse badly enough
to misread its own name as an unrecognized flag. This was the actual
cause of harness_unit_test's 4 deterministic (not flaky -- 20/20 identical
repeat runs) test_test_cli.c failures, each burning its full 5s
confirmation-prompt timeout. Fixed by using optind=0 at all 21 reset
sites; confirmed via 3 isolated pty repros plus 10 consecutive clean
harness_unit_test runs (132/132, was 4 failures/run every time).
Also fixes a resource leak found while investigating: test_test_cli.c's
spawned xce_test sessions were only torn down by inline
clitest_kill_and_reap()/clitest_close() calls at the bottom of each test
function, which Unity's longjmp-based TEST_ASSERT abort skips entirely on
failure, leaking the child process and its pty/pipe fds. Added a static
session mirror (safe across the longjmp, unlike a stack pointer) reaped
from harness_test.c's tearDown(), which Unity guarantees runs after every
test regardless of outcome.
Logged as bug-1807/bug-1808 in .wolf/buglog.json, with the underlying
getopt/longjmp gotchas recorded in .wolf/cerebrum.md. Full ASAN
/xce-build harness also passes 5/5 with no sanitizer findings.

Feature-level validation (/kiro-validate-impl) found src/harness/CLAUDE.md
(written by task 1.3, before tasks 2.1/2.2/3.1 landed) still claimed no
/xce-build harness entry point and no unit-test binaries existed -- both
false by the time all 16 tasks completed. Updated to describe the real,
final state: /xce-build harness as the build command, and all 5 test
binaries (harness_unit_test + 4 standalone) under the harness suite.
Also logs one more out-of-boundary stale-path finding
(src/tools/test-commit-durability.sh:97) for a future owner.
This closes out feature-level validation for xce-harness-component --
mechanical (173+1213 tests, 0 failures), design/boundary alignment
(zero controller-private dependency, both sanctioned exceptions exact
match), and requirements coverage (22/22 mapped) all passed cleanly.

Move test_resval_typeresolve.c, test_joblist_display.c,
test_join_worker_args.c, and test_listrow_json.c into
src/harness/testsuite/, and re-create their executable()/test() blocks
verbatim in src/harness/meson.build under suite 'harness' (task 1.1 had
already fully deleted them from src/controller/meson.build, not just
moved them, so these had been orphaned on disk since that commit).
Fix test_joblist_display.c's ctrlstatus_fmt.h include path to the
xce/ location promoted in task 1.2.
Verified against the pre-task-1.1 baseline (git show cf55d691^): all
four blocks' source lists, c_args, and env are faithfully reproduced,
only paths and the suite tag changed.
harness suite: 5 binaries, all green (resval_typeresolve 4, joblist_display
20, join_worker_args 5, listrow_json 12, harness_unit_test 132 -- 173 total,
0 failures). controller suite unchanged: 1199 Tests 0 Failures 0 Ignored.
This completes Major Task 2 (Core) -- the harness component now owns all
5 of its test binaries independently of the controller build.

Relocate the 13 test files that lived inside controller_unit_test into
src/harness/testsuite/, add a new Unity runner (harness_test.c, modeled
on controller_test.c) carrying their extern/RUN_TEST entries, and
register the new harness_unit_test executable + suite in
src/harness/meson.build with an explicit build-order dependency on
xce_test (two of its tests spawn that binary over a pty).
Finish clearing the controller side: remove test_test_cli.c/
test_xcetest_process_entry.c from controller_unit_test_src and their
extern/RUN_TEST entries from controller_test.c, and remove the
temporary xce_test_controller_link symlink bridge task 1.1 added (no
longer needed now that both binaries build as siblings under harness/).
Verified: harness suite 132 Tests 0 Failures 0 Ignored; controller suite
1199 Tests 0 Failures 0 Ignored. 1199+132=1331 matches the pre-move
controller_unit_test baseline exactly (cross-checked against buglog
bug-1798/bug-1805).

New src/harness/CLAUDE.md documenting the component's purpose, current
build command, and file layout -- every claim grounded in the live repo
state (verified: no /xce-build harness entry point yet, no
harness_unit_test binary yet, both land in later tasks of this spec).

Move the one genuinely shared header (header-only, static inline, zero
link dependency) from src/controller/testsuite/ to src/include/xce/,
alongside the existing cross-daemon shared headers (cluster.h, types.h,
errnox.h). Repoint its three current consumers (harness's test.c and
joblist_display.c, controller's test_ctrlstatus.c) to the new path.
test_joblist_display.c is intentionally left on the old path -- it
relocates in task 2.2.
Also removes src/harness/meson.build's temporary '../controller/testsuite'
incdir shim, which task 1.1 added and explicitly marked for removal once
this task landed.
controller_unit_test: 1228 Tests 0 Failures 0 Ignored (unchanged from
task 1.1's baseline, confirming a header-path-only change).

Move xce_test's 15 production sources + headers from src/controller/testsuite/
into a new src/harness/ component with its own meson.build, and strip every
now-dangling controller-side reference (11 controller_unit_test_src entries,
4 standalone test-binary blocks, 11 controller_test.c extern/RUN_TEST lines)
so the controller build is never left broken.
Fixes a broken relative-symlink bridge (xce_test_controller_link) added to
keep two controller-embedded tests (test_test_cli.c, test_xcetest_process_entry.c)
finding the relocated xce_test binary until task 2.1 moves them too.
Discovered and documented in design.md: four controller-domain regression
tests call functions directly from four of xce_test's own files, requiring
controller_unit_test to permanently recompile them from src/harness/ — a
real dependency neither the original discovery nor design audit caught.
controller_unit_test: 1228 Tests 0 Failures 0 Ignored (verified via the
Unity binary's own printed summary line, not just meson's aggregate count).
