bug-1462: raft_cb_become_leader baselined committed_config_tag to the
majority-safe floor across voters, correct for WAL LSN safety but wrong
for config tags — a leader's own actively-loaded config isn't
speculative like an unacknowledged WAL entry. On a fresh deploy every
peer reports tag=0 except the new primary, so the floor stuck at 0
forever and late-joining standbys never received a config push.
ha_promotion_config_tag_floor() clamps to max(safe_tag, self_tag),
mirroring bug-1060's WAL-truncation clamp pattern. Validated with
20-round sequential (63 jobs, zero loss) and 20-round chaotic
overlapping-kill (zero committed divergence, zero committed job loss)
HA failover soaks; unit suite 977/977 green.
raft_cb_become_leader()'s eligibility gate read
persist_apply_resource_fenced() before this process's own first
cluster_init_phase2()/persist_recover()/replay_wal() call ever ran --
so a node whose first-ever replay hit a resource-exhaustion apply
failure could still become CTRL_PRIMARY, because the fence that
replay would engage didn't exist yet when the gate checked it. Every
LATER promotion evaluation was already correctly protected; this was
a narrow gap specific to a process's single very-first election.
Fix: re-check persist_apply_resource_fenced() immediately after
cluster_init_phase2() completes on first boot, refusing promotion
(same WARN + ha_arm_promotion_fence_timer() + return pattern as the
existing refusal branch) if that first replay just engaged the fence.
Confirmed ha_elect_evaluate_and_signal (the other election path) is
dead in production for the promotion outcome -- every live call site
of handle_request_vote_reply passes vote_granted=0 since bug-828
redirected real grant recording to the record-only, non-signaling
ha_record_vote_reply -- so raft_cb_become_leader is the sole live
promotion path and this fix's scope is complete.
TDD: new test test_first_boot_promotion_evaluates_own_first_replay_fence
wires ha_phase2_hook to actually call persist_recover(), reproducing
production ordering exactly. RED-confirmed against the unfixed code
at the precise predicted assertion; GREEN-confirmed after the fix.
Full controller_unit_test regression (bundles every HA-adjacent
testsuite/test_*.c) green, 0 new failures.
Originally documented (not fixed) in job-array-single-wal-record
task 7.2's Implementation Notes; logged as bug-1445 and fixed here,
outside that spec's own task list per its persist.c-only boundary.
Threads !persist_apply_resource_fenced(&c->persist) as a required
conjunct into both existing promotion-eligibility call sites in ha.c:
the periodic fence-release check (promotion_fence_timeout_fn) and the
election-time check (raft_cb_become_leader). A node with the fence
engaged is refused promotion at both points; once it self-clears
(task 4.2), the node is eligible again with no other action.
Task 4.3 of job-array-single-wal-record (Requirements 9.4, 9.5).
raft-drive-async's default-ON pool dispatch lets messages from different
peer endpoints (two vote replies, or a vote reply racing a vote request)
run concurrently on different vtask pool workers. raft_state_t's fields
(votes_granted, replies_received, election_decided, term, role) are plain
non-atomic — the raft library assumes a single-threaded caller. Two
concurrent raft_on_vote_reply() calls could race: one reaches quorum and
promotes to PRIMARY while the other, reading pre-increment vote count,
independently satisfies "all-replied, no quorum" and fires
on_become_follower for the same term, silently reverting the promotion —
every request afterward correctly (but wrongly) rejected as STANDBY.
Add ha->raft_lock (PTHREAD_MUTEX_RECURSIVE — a WON/quorum outcome can
legitimately re-enter the state machine synchronously on the same thread,
e.g. PreVote WON -> real election) around every raft_state_t entry point
on the election/vote path. Verified via 40-round sequential and 40-round
chaotic HA soak, zero committed-job loss, all 3 nodes led.
Replace the deliberate election-carrier leak with an atomic refcount:
a bias reference held by ha->elect_ctx plus one reference per captured
vote endpoint, released via a new endpoint_t.on_fini teardown-completion
hook (fired once, before ep->data is freed). Both real-election and
PreVote capture sites (raft_cb_send_vote_request,
raft_cb_send_pre_vote_request) increment on capture; both publish sites
(ha_start_election_async, ha_start_prevote_async) now atomic_exchange
the outgoing carrier and release it instead of leaking or freeing
outright, so a still-outstanding vote endpoint keeps the superseded
carrier alive until its own teardown completes.
Verified: 758+ controller tests green, isolated LeakSanitizer run shows
zero ha_elect_ctx_t leaks across many election/PreVote rounds, no
premature-free/UAF under supersession, and a live 10-round HA soak
(36 jobs, zero loss, all 3 nodes served as primary).
bug-1433: raft_cb_become_leader runs synchronously off peer_ctrl_dispatch_to_pool,
which hardcodes VTASK_LIVENESS for every inbound peer-control packet including
vote replies. The bug-1431 round-2 fix (flusher_flush_once force-flush in
persist_promotion_advance_committed) was reachable from that never-blocks task
class -- same bug family as bug-1198. Removed the force-flush; round-3
(durable-capped only) plus the already-shipped bug-1432 immediate-first-heartbeat
fix close the visibility-latency gap non-blockingly. TRACKED RESIDUAL:
persist_apply_pump_run_sync is still reachable on the same VTASK_LIVENESS path
and does bounded pread() -- lower risk (page-cache-hot) but strictly still
blocking I/O; not safe to remove outright (reopens bug-1043-family job loss),
needs its own follow-up (reclassify peer_ctrl_classify's winning-vote-reply case
or dispatch promotion tail onto a fresh VTASK_LIVE_BLOCK vtask).
bug-1434: persist_promotion_advance_committed and ha_standby_advance_committed_and_apply
raced on persist_t.committed_lsn via an unlocked load-then-conditional-store during
the promotion window (before ha->role flips to CTRL_PRIMARY) -- a losing racer could
regress committed_lsn. Added persist_committed_lsn_advance_atomic (CAS retry loop,
lock-free) and routed both call sites through it.
Validated: 19/19 unit test suites, 6-round chaotic soak (0 loss/divergence) + 6-round
sequential+leadership-coverage soak, both PASS. Also folds in raft-apply-decoupling
and raft-ha-core-safety validate-impl phase bumps to "implemented" and clears
config-upgrade-snapshot's now-satisfied entity-bearing-snapshots block.
A primary never learns of a follower's higher term via AppendEntries-reject
responses: ha_raft_on_repl_ack only routes AE replies through
raft_on_append_entries_reply for success=1 ACKs, and that function itself
drops any reply whose term != s->term (raft.c stale-term drop) before it
could adopt a higher term anyway. Net effect: once a follower outpaces a
stale primary's term, every AppendEntries the primary sends is rejected
forever and it can never regain write-quorum — a permanent election livelock
(surfaced as "no primary elected at term>8" in HA soak testing).
Adds two fallback term-discovery vectors that fire regardless of AE-reject
outcome:
- StateReport heartbeat-reply now carries the standby's current term
(controller.capnp, typemap.h) so the primary learns a higher term on every
convergence cycle.
- New raft_on_higher_term_observed() mirrors the UpdateTerm step (strictly
greater-than only; touches term/voted_for/role; persists before notifying
on_become_follower) and is wired into both the heartbeat state-report path
and the WAL-NACK path in repl_ack_decode_and_dispatch.
Validated: 265 controller + 287 lib unit tests pass; 10-round sequential and
chaotic HA soaks both PASS with zero job loss and full leadership coverage.
Found via extended chaotic /xce-test-ha soaking on top of the bug-1419 fix
(same session). Both bugs independently caused the 10-round chaotic soak to
fail; sequential and chaotic now pass cleanly and repeatably.
1. Term-desync liveness deadlock (new): a standby that loses a near-
simultaneous election race to a peer can legitimately end up at a HIGHER
term than the peer that actually won and became primary. The primary's
now-stale-term AppendEntries/heartbeats are correctly rejected by the raft
library, but every one of those rejected messages was ALSO resetting the
standby's own liveness deadline (ha_on_heartbeat_received), so its
liveness timeout never fired and it could never start a fresh,
higher-term election to let the cluster self-heal — a permanent stall.
Fix: ha_msg_term_is_stale() gates the liveness reset (and
ha_discover_primary step-down) on the incoming message's own term stamp,
skipping it for provably-stale messages, in cluster.c's wal_catchup_entry
and nop/heartbeat handlers.
2. bug-847 (root-caused 2026-06-30, never fixed): a per-sub-entry `payload`
Data blob in a multi-entry WAL catch-up batch loses its capnp pointer once
the message crosses a segment boundary — the receiver decodes
raw_payload_len=0 for entries at/after the boundary and silently persists
empty WAL entries (structurally intact: correct LSN/term/CRC chain, empty
content). Only surfaces when a node rejoins and catches up a real batch,
which is why it needed a live chaotic soak (not the 2-entry unit test) to
reproduce. Fix: carry every sub-entry's payload concatenated in ONE
top-level batchPayloads blob instead of one Data blob per entry — a
single top-level blob does not exhibit the cross-segment loss. Sliced
back apart on decode using each sub-entry's own wirePayloadLen, a plain
scalar that (like lsn/entryType/term) decodes via the generic generated
decode path and was never subject to the bug. Confirmed via targeted
diagnostic logging that the corrupted entry arrives already-empty over
the wire (not a receive-side race), and via a faithful reproduction at
live JOB_SUBMIT payload size (5×3560B) after the original 2-entry/
14×872B tests turned out not to cross a segment boundary in this
environment.
Incidental fixes found and fixed along the way:
- A real self-deadlock (persist_entry_term() re-acquiring p->lock from
inside a caller that already held it) introduced by an initial, ultimately
unnecessary WAL-read locking fix attempted before bug-847 was pinned down;
fixed via a new persist_entry_term_locked() lock-free counterpart. Left in
place as a genuine (if incidental) hardening of ha_stream_wal_to_standby's
read consistency.
- .claude/skills/xce-test-ha/SKILL.md's `context: fork` frontmatter caused
the skill's own forked sub-session teardown to SIGHUP the whole
xce_controller process group mid-soak, killing all 3 nodes silently with
no error logged, whenever the soak was launched via the Skill tool itself
(setsid/nohup inside run-ha-soak.sh only protects against a controlling
terminal's own SIGHUP, not a parent forked-session's teardown). Removed;
added explicit guidance to launch long soaks via direct Bash from the main
session instead.
Verified: full 78-group unit regression sweep clean (0 failures) after each
change; two consecutive clean 10-round chaotic soaks and one clean 10-round
sequential soak on the final binary (zero committed divergence, zero job
loss, all 3 nodes led in both modes).
vote_reply_dispatch passed the compressed, self-excluded local votes_idx
(vctx->peer_idx, set by raft_cb_send_vote_request's absolute->local remap)
straight through to raft_on_vote_reply, which indexes vote_replies[] in
ABSOLUTE cluster space -- the same space raft_start_election's self-mark
and per-peer send loop use.
For a 3-node cluster's middle node (self_idx=1), the peer at absolute
index 2 compresses to votes_idx=1, colliding with vote_replies[self_idx=1]
-- the slot raft_start_election already marked for the self-vote. The
library's per-peer dedup guard then silently drops the genuine reply as a
duplicate, so votes_granted never reaches quorum even though the peer
granted. Peer 0 is unaffected (compressed index equals absolute), which is
why sequential elections and prior soak runs never surfaced this -- only a
middle-priority node losing its higher-priority peer and depending on its
lower peer's vote hits the collision.
Fixed by routing through ha_repl_ack_abs_peer_idx (already existed,
already unit-tested, already used for the analogous heartbeat-ACK path)
before calling raft_on_vote_reply. ha_record_vote_reply immediately above
is unchanged -- it correctly wants the compressed index for ctx->votes[].
Confirmed pre_vote_reply_dispatch needs no equivalent fix: its send path
already stores the absolute index.
New regression test drives a real 3-node election end-to-end through the
actual decode/dispatch path (not the test-hook bypass every other
real-vote test in this file uses): Expected 2 Was 1 pre-fix, GREEN
post-fix. Full 79-group suite: zero new failures. 10-round --chaotic HA
soak: zero committed divergence, zero committed job loss.
Adds --factstream HA soak mode driving real jstart/jfinish/jfail worker-fact
traffic against a live 3-node cluster, killing the primary mid-stream and
asserting zero committed-state divergence and zero phantom fact reactions.
Building this scenario surfaced bug-1416: persist_recover()'s boot-time
apply-correctness verification can race the live apply pump and the standby
live-replication apply path, both of which mutate the same last_applied_lsn/
job-table state the verification re-reads live -- producing a false
APPLY_DIVERGENT that permanently fences an otherwise-healthy node. Fixed with
a new persist_t.recovery_complete gate that defers only the in-memory apply
(never the durability write or replication ACK) while a recovery pass is in
flight, closed from the earliest safe point in myapp_run() so an election-
retry candidate can't apply live traffic before persist_recover() ever runs.
Round-2 adversarial review independently verified the ACK/durability paths
stay ungated, reproduced the myapp.c fix as load-bearing via revert-and-
reproduce, and confirmed real-divergence detection still fires. Live 3-node
factstream soak: 2/2 rounds PASS, zero APPLY_DIVERGENT across 5 recover
calls. controller_unit_test: zero new failures across 23 groups.
Add explicit test coverage for the DIVERGENT fence's stay-alive and
restart-only-clear guarantees (task 5.3), which surfaced a critical,
pre-existing safety gap: the sticky recovery_unrecoverable flag is
trigger-agnostic, and two pre-existing live call sites in ha.c
(promotion_fence_timeout_fn's periodic timer, and
raft_cb_become_leader's promotion-eligibility gate) clear it based
purely on structural conditions, never checking the apply verdict.
A node whose local apply dispatch diverges from the committed log,
but whose WAL bytes are otherwise structurally healthy, would have
its fence silently released by the live timer, then be eligible for
promotion to primary on a later election -- serving genuinely
divergent state.
Fix: gate both clear-call-sites on persist_apply_verdict(&c->persist)
!= APPLY_DIVERGENT in addition to their existing structural checks.
An apply-divergence-triggered fence can now only clear via a fresh
process restart's clean persist_recover() replay.
New tests: test_promotion_fence_apply_divergent_survives_structural_catchup
(test_commit_durability.c) covers the timer site; and
test_promotion_refused_when_apply_divergent_even_if_eligible
(test_convergence_verification.c) covers the promotion-gate site,
structurally isolated so it cannot pass for the wrong reason.
Closes out task-group 5 (restart apply-correctness verification).
commit_resolve_pending_above(ce, lsn_floor, rc) fails every registered
continuation for lsn > lsn_floor, reusing commit_resolve()'s existing
exactly-once/idempotent guarantee (no parallel bookkeeping path).
Truncation: a new on_truncate/truncate_cb_ctx callback on persist_t
(same inversion-of-control shape as the existing on_durable_advance
hook) fires from persist_truncate_wal_above after releasing p->lock,
only when entries were actually removed. This one wrapper covers all
three real truncation call sites: raft_cb_become_leader's
post-election truncate, the library's on_truncate_from
conflict-reconcile, and ha_demotion_convergence_fn's post-demotion
truncate.
Demotion: raft_cb_become_follower calls
commit_resolve_pending_above(&c->commit, 0, -XCE_ERR_STANDBY) --
lsn_floor=0 fails everything, since a demoted node can never
authoritatively confirm anything still pending (CP posture).
Without this, a demoted or truncated node would leave any pending
async command permanently unresolved -- the requester would simply
never get a reply, worse than today's bounded-timeout behavior.
Also closes bug-1407 (pre-existing test_config_repl flake, unrelated
to this feature) -- confirmed fixed as a side effect of prior tasks
in this series, 70/70 passing across 3 independent runs.
ha_send_snapshot_to_standby ignored the network send's return value in its
chunk loop, silently truncating a transfer on a mid-stream error while still
logging "complete" (bug-1386). Fixing the silent drop exposed a second,
independent bug in the same pipeline: ha_handle_snapshot_chunk appended
received chunks in arrival order instead of at their wire-carried
chunk_offset, so out-of-order delivery across the vtask pool corrupted the
reassembled file even though every chunk's bytes were individually correct
(bug-1389). Fixed by checking every fallible call in the send loop and
switching the receiver to pwrite-at-offset with a count-based completion
tracker.
Adds snapverify/snapdiff xce_test commands (offline checkpoint-file
structural validator and byte-level comparator) used to diagnose bug-1389 and
kept as standing diagnostic tools for future snapshot-transfer triage.
g_drive_async_configpush_offload flipped back ON after both fixes, validated
via 6-round chaotic + 3/3 force-snapshot soak (raft-drive-async task 3.3).

Cross-references bug-1381 in tasks.md and the ha.c configpush flag comment.
No code behavior change -- push_config_transport_only's race (raw standby
endpoint pointers read/written by unprotected pthread_create workers,
independent of the offload flag) is a distinct, still-open blocker from
bug-1197/bug-1376 (both closed in the prior commit).
Root cause: peer_ctrl_msg_handler held ep->dispatch_inflight incremented
across the entire peer_ctrl_dispatch_to_pool call, including its inline
fallback (the common cold-start shape when ha->pool isn't wired yet). That
inline body can reach raft_cb_become_follower, which -- now that
cluster_init_phase2 ran synchronously earlier in the same call chain and
wired the pool -- tears down its own loser vote-ep (the very ep whose reply
triggered this call) via the deferred path (vote_ep_teardown_async), whose
endpoint_mark_tearing_down spins waiting for dispatch_inflight==0 on that
SAME ep. That count is held only by this exact call, on this exact thread,
and can't reach 0 until the spin itself returns -- a permanent self-deadlock.
Confirmed live via a gdb thread backtrace: added a GDB_WRAP debug seam to
run-ha-soak.sh (launches a named node directly under `gdb --batch` so it
becomes ptrace-legal as gdb's own direct child under yama scope 1, bypassing
a live-attach restriction), then SIGINT to gdb once the log went stale for a
bounded interrupt + full backtrace. The frame dump showed pool=0x0 at
peer_ctrl_dispatch_to_pool, and the same ep pointer in the nested
vote_ep_teardown_async -> endpoint_mark_tearing_down frame, spinning on
sched_yield().
Fix: moved the dispatch_inflight release into peer_ctrl_dispatch_to_pool
itself, at the exact right point per exit path -- released BEFORE calling
the inline body on every fallback path (pool==NULL, OOM, enqueue failure),
since io_worker is single-threaded and the inline path never enqueues
anything (no pool-worker race left to protect against once inline execution
is committed to); released only AFTER the non-blocking enqueue completes on
the success path, preserving the original protection for the genuinely
concurrent pool-worker case.
New unit test test_vep_self_teardown_does_not_deadlock uses a bounded
pthread_timedjoin_np so a regression fails loud instead of hanging the
suite. RED confirmed via a temporary manual revert (ETIMEDOUT) before
restoring the fix.
Live-verified with both flags ON: --force-snapshot soak (the exact repro
shape) completes without hanging across repeated runs, confirms real
snapshot installs, zero divergence, zero job loss; a 6-round --chaotic soak
also passed clean; full controller suite green throughout.
g_drive_async_snapshot_offload and g_drive_async_peerctrl_dispatch_enabled
now default ON in production, closing raft-drive-async tasks 3.1 and 3.2.
g_drive_async_configpush_offload stays OFF -- a distinct, still-open hazard
in push_config_transport_only's endpoint handling (task 3.3, unrelated to
this bug).

Cross-references bug-1376 in tasks.md and the ha.c flag comment for the
unresolved hang found while investigating the raft-drive-async flag flip
(commit f3b6e6a). No code behavior change.
Both fixes are real and independently verified; the drive-async flags
(g_drive_async_snapshot_offload, g_drive_async_peerctrl_dispatch_enabled)
stay at their production-default OFF -- see the tasks.md session note for
why the flip itself doesn't land in this commit.
1. Snapshot-lane borrowed-endpoint hazard (task 3.2, bug-1197 family):
ha_snapshot_send_dispatch now takes endpoint_ref(ep) before submitting to
the slow lane, released on every non-lane terminal path and by
snapshot_lane_fn on completion. Reuses the general bug-1298 endpoint
refcount system (standby-ep teardown already routes through
endpoint_unref via cluster.c's endpoint_killer) -- a concurrent RDHUP
teardown can now only drop the owner's reference while a transfer is in
flight, never free the ep out from under it. New test:
test_snapshot_offload_holds_endpoint_ref_across_transfer (RED->GREEN).
2. Catch-up streamer WAL_CHECKPOINT bug (found while verifying #1 via a live
soak, pre-existing, unrelated to the drive-async flags): ha_stream_wal_
to_standby had no filter for WAL_CHECKPOINT markers -- local-only
bookkeeping that still consumes a real LSN slot via persist_write_
checkpoint_marker's own current_lsn++. It shipped one to a catching-up
standby, which correctly refused it (persist_wal_write_replicated
rejects type==WAL_CHECKPOINT) and got stuck retrying the same LSN
forever. Fixed by skipping WAL_CHECKPOINT entirely in the streamer loop,
mirroring the existing replay_wal/term-index precedent of treating
checkpoint-marker LSNs as invisible gaps. New test:
test_wal_stream_skips_checkpoint_marker (RED->GREEN).
Attempted flipping both drive-async flags ON after landing these fixes (the
"full fix, defer prod flip" decision's prerequisite -- 4.1+4.2 are green).
A 6-round --chaotic soak passed clean, but a --force-snapshot soak (a
genuinely empty node cold-start rejoin, the one scenario chaotic mode never
exercises) surfaced a THIRD, not-yet-root-caused issue: the freshly-wiped
node's own self-election appears to race cluster_init_phase2's vtask-pool
wiring, then the process hangs silently (no crash, no ASAN report) until
killed. Reverted both flags to OFF rather than ship an unproven state --
production behavior is unchanged by this commit. Full controller suite
green and both soaks (--force-snapshot, 6-round --chaotic) pass clean with
flags OFF, confirming no regression from the two logic fixes.

The term-blind ha_apply_single_entry direct-persist branch (carried
forward from task 2.4) is unreachable with a real non-zero term in any
current production path: its only trigger, raft_send_append_entries,
has zero production call sites (library simulator only). Both real
senders (repl_broadcast, ha_stream_wal_to_standby) always emit a
non-zero term for a present LSN. Documents this in ha.c and design.md
rather than structurally retiring a dormant path (YAGNI), with an
explicit flag for future re-evaluation if a heartbeat-driver task ever
wires up raft_send_append_entries.
Adds two regression pins: restart preserves (term,lsn) identity
(replay_wal already reconstructs the term index via record_entry_term),
and real senders never produce the term-blind wire shape.
test_ha_core_safety 28/0, no regression, no ASAN reports.
Adds checkpointTerm (@6, append-only) to the SnapshotTransfer wire
message. The leader stamps it via persist_entry_term(p, checkpoint_lsn)
when sending a snapshot; the standby reconciles it into its own
per-LSN term index (persist_reconcile_checkpoint_term) right after
persist_load_snapshot succeeds, before applied_lsn advances. This
authoritatively overwrites any stale local term a divergent
pre-snapshot entry left at the checkpoint LSN, closing the gap task
3.1's RED test proved (Expected 7 Was 3 -> now passes). Transport
stays persist_t-free; the reconcile lives in persist.c per the
existing dependency direction. Decode is auto-generated via capnp
mapname; only the hand-rolled encode path (request.c/typemap.h, needed
for the raw snapshot payload) required a matching manual update.
test_ha_core_safety 25/0, test_config_repl 66/0, no ASAN reports.
ha_handle_snapshot_chunk now logs whether a received checkpoint was
fully entity-restored or was a legacy position-only file (INFO level,
framed as an expected rollout state -- never an error, per design.md).
The rc-gates-applied_lsn control flow is byte-for-byte unchanged from
task 5.2 (confirmed by review) -- this task is purely additive
observability, matching design.md's own note that this call site
"needs no change" once persist_load_snapshot's gate is correct.
New test drives the legacy path end-to-end through the real production
handler (rc==0, file renamed, applied_lsn advances to the legacy LSN).
This completes the integration layer -- write path (jobs+queues),
restore-before-advance read path, and the production wiring are all in
place and independently reviewed. Only validation tasks remain (7.1
chaotic soak, 8.1 rollback compatibility).

Extends persist_load_snapshot's public signature with an
out_entities_restored bool*, per design.md's documented contract. The
static load_snapshot function -- the real restore logic -- is completely
untouched (still today's watermark-only implementation, byte-identical
to before this task); only a thin wrapper was added that naively maps
*out_entities_restored = (rc==0), deliberately scaffolding so the 3 new
RED tests fail for genuine reasons rather than accidentally passing.
ha_handle_snapshot_chunk's sole call site gets a mechanical
declare-and-pass update -- confirmed inert, never reads the new
out-param (task 6.1's job).
Three tests against persist_load_snapshot directly (unlike prior tasks'
tests, which deliberately stayed on the raw-byte-parsing side to avoid
this exact function): restore-before-advance (fails at the job-lookup
assertion -- nothing is ever restored today), corrupted-entity-leaves-
position-unchanged (fails at rc!=0 -- today's code ignores the corrupted
section entirely, since load_snapshot never reads past the legacy
header), legacy-file-reports-position-only (fails at entities_restored==
false -- the naive wrapper claims restoration for every rc==0 case,
including legacy files).
This is the exact function/call site that caused task 2.2's rejection
(a live position-advances-before-restore-validates hazard). Independent
review verified load_snapshot's body is byte-identical to commit
d52eb94, the wrapper does nothing beyond the naive mapping, and ha.c's
change never reads the new out-param anywhere -- no repeat of that
mistake here.

Adds snapshot_inflight_lsn[MAX_HA_CANDIDATES] to ha_state_t, alongside the
existing snapshot_inflight[] flag it mirrors exactly: set to the
checkpoint's LSN at ha_snapshot_send_dispatch before a transfer's first
byte goes out, cleared to 0 at every completion/failure path
(snapshot_lane_fn's normal completion, and all 3 early-return failure
sites: malloc failure, slowlane dedup-refuse, slowlane submit failure).
This is the foundation task 4.3 will consult from rotate_snapshots to
avoid deleting a checkpoint file a peer is still mid-transfer reading
from -- the one genuinely new retention guard this feature needs (the
existing write_snapshot-before-trim_wal_segments sequencing already
satisfies the WAL-trim side of Requirement 3).
Proven via a new gated unit test (test_ha_liveness.c) that observes the
tracked LSN mid-flight while the send body is parked at a test gate, not
just before/after -- confirms the lifecycle ordering, not just the
endpoints.

prevote; an RDHUP landing in the gap after a lost election (role briefly back
to CTRL_STANDBY) re-triggers a fresh ha_begin_failover -> PreVote -> real
election (term++). One bump per RDHUP -> unbounded escalation under a sustained
cadence (observed round 4: 48 begin_failovers, terms 6->24, round overran the
harness window).
Fix: ha_state_t.last_failover_ms (atomic) stamped at ha_begin_failover;
ha_on_primary_ctrl_fd_rdhup drops an RDHUP within 2*election_timeout_ms of the
last trigger (closes the dead fd, returns) so the election's own jittered retry
(5.7) runs without the external RDHUP cadence adding term bumps. First trigger
never debounced; genuine loss still fails over, at most once per window.
Validation: unit-proven — test_rdhup_within_cooldown_is_debounced (recent
last_failover -> stays CTRL_STANDBY) vs test_rdhup_single_node_reaches_primary
(last_failover=0 -> CTRL_PRIMARY) is a differential proof. Soak: 10/10 elect,
terms 4->14 bounded, begin_failover 14/14/12 (was 48), committed_job_loss=0, no
regression. The stochastic storm did not recur this run (debounce fired 0x), so
soak-reproduction of the storm is still pending; the mechanism rests on the
unit test. Election suites green (rdhup 8/0, prevote 12/0, core_safety 24/0,
election 28/0, failover_prevote 6/0).

The io_worker freed an endpoint (endpoint_killer, cluster.c) on connection
teardown while the vtask dispatcher concurrently read ep->busy
(endpoint_is_task_blocked, netio.c) on a queued vtask — a heap-use-after-free
that ABORTed a controller mid-chaotic-soak (round 4), dropping the cluster
below quorum so no primary could be elected.
Replace the accumulation of ad-hoc ep-lifetime patches (bug-1282 lockless busy,
bug-1197 dispatch_inflight drain + deferred teardown vtask) with one principled
invariant: an endpoint lives until its reference count reaches 0.
- endpoint_t.refcnt (_Atomic) + heap_alloc flag; endpoint_get starts a heap ep
at refcnt=1 (the owner ref).
- endpoint_ref/endpoint_unref: the last unref fini's + frees a heap ep.
Embedded eps (client ctx->ep, heap_alloc=0) are never freed here — their
container owns them — so a vtask-balanced ref/unref pair is a safe no-op.
- vtask_enq takes a per-vtask ref on the bound ep BEFORE publishing the task to
the dispatcher; run_task / taskq_item_killer release it. So the dispatcher can
read ep->busy on any queued vtask without the ep being freed underneath it.
- every HEAP-ep teardown site (endpoint_killer, handle_endpoint_error, the
vote/prevote connect-fail paths, the vote-ep loser/teardown paths, the standby
reconnect/eviction paths) now drops its owner ref via endpoint_unref instead of
raw endpoint_fini+free. Several of those also leaked the ep struct before
(endpoint_fini-only); unref fixes the leak too.
Validation: controller_unit_test 182 tests / 0 failures (test_ha_vep_teardown
updated — its OFF-path test asserted the old struct leak, now fixed). 6-round
ASAN chaotic soak: ZERO AddressSanitizer reports, ctrl-3 no longer crashes at
round 4, all 6 rounds elect at bounded terms. (The pre-existing iomgr_fini ->
SSL_CTX_free abort under openssl 3.6 in the aggregate test binary is unrelated.)
Note: with the crash gone, the soak now reaches rounds 4-6 for the first time and
surfaces a SEPARATE, pre-existing committed-job-loss/divergence (the bug-795/828
failover catch-up gap; ha-commit-durability domain) — not a refcount regression
(ASAN clean; rounds 1-3 are loss-free).
The per-campaign election watchdog was armed with a FIXED election_timeout_ms
(raft_start_election -> on_schedule_timeout -> raft_cb_schedule_timeout). Under
cold-connection churn a just-restarted survivor opens a fresh TCP+SSL endpoint
per vote round, so its single needed grant can land a hair AFTER a constant
deadline on EVERY campaign -- a resonance: the campaign times out, the term
re-escalates, and the now-stale grant is dropped (DropStaleResponse). Forever.
Terms climb unbounded; the freshest survivor never tallies quorum. This is the
final round-4 chaotic-soak election-liveness stall.
Fix (Ongaro thesis 3.4): re-randomize the watchdog per campaign to the canonical
[T, 2T] interval in the HA adapter, so some campaign's deadline falls AFTER its
grant RTT and the grant lands in-window. Done in raft_cb_schedule_timeout so the
pure (sim-tested) raft library stays deterministic. Independent of
election_jitter_max_ms (which tunes only the sub-second startup/stagger jitter)
so it spreads even when jmax is small/0; never below the configured floor so
genuine-loss failover is not sped up past election_timeout_ms.
Preserves Election Safety (no change to term/vote/DropStaleResponse logic).
new ha_jittered_election_delay() helper + 2 unit tests (RED verified: stubbing
jitter to 0 fails test_5_7_campaign_timeout_is_randomized with the resonance
message; PIN guards floor + modulo-by-zero). Suite: 24 Tests / 0 Failures.
After 5.5 let the freshest survivor win PreVote and ENTER the real election,
round 4 still stalled: the dead primary's control fd keeps RDHUP'ing on a
deterministic ~15s cadence, and ha_on_primary_ctrl_fd_rdhup's 5.2 suppress only
catches CTRL_STANDBY — so an ELECTING node fell through to ha_begin_failover and
restarted a fresh PreVote, preempting its own in-progress real election. Every
cycle bumped the term (21->25->28->29...) and kept two survivors dueling in
lockstep, defeating the jittered election-timeout tiebreak.
Guard the RDHUP entry: if role==CTRL_ELECTING or a PreVote round is in progress,
close the dead control fd and return WITHOUT restarting failover — let the
in-progress round finish or time out (its election timeout is jittered, which
desynchronizes the duel so one survivor wins). A node not currently electing
still takes the normal 5.2-suppress / genuine-loss failover path.
RED+PIN in test_ha_core_safety.c (22 Tests / 0 Failures): CORE RED — CTRL_ELECTING
+ RDHUP must not start a new PreVote (Expected 0 Was 1 on baseline); PIN — genuine
loss (STANDBY, not electing) still fails over. Preserves Election Safety, 5.2
suppression, and genuine-loss liveness. Re-running 7.2.

The election cross-deny that stalled round 4 (after bug-1282+bug-1286 fixed): the
freshest survivor (e.g. ctrl-2 tip 15 @ term 5) could not win because it
advertised lastLogTerm = c->persist.term (the persist layer's RUNNING term,
stale/0 after a restart) instead of the term STAMPED ON its last WAL entry. So a
voter (ctrl-3, last entry term 4) saw the candidate's lastLogTerm <= its own and
raft_log_ok rejected the genuinely-fresher candidate -> every round timed out ->
permanent stall. This was a documented stopgap (ha.c "task 1.3" NOTE) and is the
bug-851 term-identity family.
Fix both advertise sites (real-vote raft_cb_send_vote_request + PreVote
raft_cb_send_pre_vote_request): lastLogTerm = persist_entry_term(&c->persist,
ha->raft.log_len) when log_len>0 — the SAME accessor voters use to compute their
own last-log term (on_get_entry_term -> persist_entry_term), so logOk is now
symmetric and the freshest survivor wins. Strengthens Election Safety/Leader
Completeness (only genuinely-fresher candidates are granted); the index source
(ha->raft.log_len, seeded from the recovered WAL tip) is unchanged.
Root-caused from a frozen round-4 soak: ctrl-2 (15@t5) vs ctrl-3 (11@t4); ctrl-3
denied ctrl-2 on logOk (mislabeled "eligibility"). Re-running 7.2 to confirm.

The round-4 election stall surfaced by the 7.2 soak (bug-1272): after several
overlapping kills the only fully-up-to-date node is killed and the two survivors
are both restarted-and-lagging (in_catch_up=1) with no live primary left to catch
up FROM — so the flag never clears. Each holds the full committed prefix and is a
SAFE candidate, yet raft_cb_vote_eligible denied ALL PreVotes while in_catch_up
UNCONDITIONALLY, so they mutually denied and the election deadlocked forever.
Gate the in_catch_up deny on a LIVE primary (primary_ctrl_fd>=0 &&
ha_heartbeat_is_fresh), mirroring the heartbeat-fresh deny one block up. The
deny's purpose is to avoid disrupting a primary that is actively replicating to
us; once the primary is unreachable, raft_log_ok (already applied in Step 2 of
raft_on_pre_vote_request, before this callback) guarantees the candidate's log
>= ours, so granting a fresher candidate is safe (Leader Completeness preserved).
Adds 3 cases to test_ha_core_safety.c driving the real raft_on_pre_vote_request:
CORE RED (catching-up survivor + primary gone must GRANT a fresh candidate),
PIN (still DENY while a live primary feeds it), PIN (STALE candidate still DENIED
by logOk). test_ha_core_safety 20 Tests / 0 Failures; 5.1/5.2 unaffected.

A recovered standby whose control channel flaps (transient RDHUP) while a
current-term primary is alive treated each flap as "primary died" and launched
an unwinnable PreVote failover (peers see the live primary and deny, the round
times out, the channel re-establishes, repeat ~15s) — so the node prevote-spun
forever instead of rejoining, wedging the chaotic soak (research.md §"Phase 4/5").
Add a freshness guard at the RDHUP failover-initiation path
(ha_on_primary_ctrl_fd_rdhup): when CTRL_STANDBY and ha_heartbeat_is_fresh,
stay CTRL_STANDBY, re-arm the liveness watchdog (production), and await the
primary's reconnect instead of campaigning — the same guard
ha_failover_stagger_fn already applies on the deferred PreVote path. Genuine
loss (stale heartbeat) falls through to failover unchanged; no term bump / no
role change, so Election Safety is untouched.
Keeping the standby attached lets catch-up complete, which clears in_catch_up
and lets votes flow again — so this one guard also resolves the downstream
catching-up-node vote-deny deadlock (obs 1240).
Flips task 5.1's CORE RED to GREEN: test_ha_core_safety 17 Tests / 0 Failures
(spurious launches=0/5; genuine-loss final_term=8; Election Safety A=3/B=0 →
1 primary). Zero failing suites binary-wide; LSan unchanged vs baseline.

When the (still-default-OFF) peer-control dispatch flag is ON,
raft_cb_become_follower runs as a vtask pool worker and frees every peer
vote-ep while other pool workers may still hold those eps' data — a UAF
(bug-1197). This makes that path quiescence-safe so the flag can later be
flipped ON (deferred to the 4.x prod-flip gate; production stays OFF here).
Mechanism (no libxce-wide endpoint refcount; reuses the existing per-ep FIFO +
busy serialization):
- Deferred teardown-as-vtask: the loser loop, when dispatch is ON and the pool
is wired, does per vote-ep endpoint_mark_tearing_down -> iomgr_unmonitor ->
enqueue a VTASK_IO/VTASK_LIVENESS teardown vtask bound to that ep. Per-ep busy
FIFO makes it run strictly after any in-flight/queued same-ep peer-control
vtask; the body NULLs iod->ep before endpoint_fini+free(ep) to disarm
run_task's post-body endpoint_unblock_tasks (which would touch the freed
ep->lock). OFF / pool-unwired path is byte-for-byte the legacy endpoint_fini.
- RCU-like drain closes the dispatch/teardown TOCTOU window: new _Atomic int
endpoint_t.dispatch_inflight (+ tearing_down:1 bit). The ON dispatch brackets
its flag-check+enqueue with fetch_add/fetch_sub (seq_cst);
endpoint_mark_tearing_down sets the flag under ep->lock, releases, then spins
until dispatch_inflight drains to 0. So every dispatch that read the flag
false finishes its enqueue before mark returns (FIFO-before the teardown
vtask); any later dispatch reads the flag set and drops the packet. ep->lock
is deliberately NOT held across the enqueue (it inverts with the taskq lock in
vtask_eligible); the counter is the lock-free handshake. Drain is bounded: the
held window is just a calloc + non-blocking enqueue on the single io_worker.
Still open before the production flag flip (4.x): the borrowed-ep race in
snapshot_lane_fn/configpush_lane_fn is distinct (slowlane thread vs io_worker
RDHUP teardown, not the vtask-pool FIFO) and needs its own per-standby-ep
discipline.
Tests: test_ha_vep_teardown.c — 5 ASan tests (ordering, late-event drop, run_task
unblock disarm, OFF-path unchanged, deterministic mark-drains-inflight-dispatch).
xcelib_test 282/0; controller_unit_test EXIT=0; ASan-clean. Adversarial
cpp-review: no CRITICAL/HIGH; handshake formally sound, flag-ON path race-free.

push_config_transport_only spawns one thread per standby then joins them with a
CONF_PUSH_TIMEOUT_MS bounded wait — blocking the caller. On the requester-less
drive-thread paths (promotion + heartbeat convergence) that wait stalls the
io_worker. Route those through ha_config_push_offloadable, gated by
g_drive_async_configpush_offload (default OFF → inline, byte-for-byte legacy;
ON → slow lane, non-blocking).
Flag ON deep-copies the config bytes + sha into a lane ctx (caller keeps owning
and freeing its own buffer); a single cluster-wide single-flight guard
(ha_state_t.configpush_inflight scalar CAS + lane key=1) bounds it to one
config-push fan-out in flight; the in-flight flag is cleared on every terminal
path (two alloc failures, -EEXIST, hard submit error, lane completion). Send
body factored into ha_config_push_do_send.
Three requester-less drive-thread call sites converted: raft_cb_become_leader
(promotion), the HA_REPL_PUSH_CONFIG heartbeat case, and the direct-CTRL_PRIMARY
FSM promotion branch. The admin-upgrade barrier (push_config_to_standbys, has a
waiting requester) and join.c are untouched.
Lands DORMANT like tasks 3.1/3.2: the lane reads c->ha.standby_endpoints and
writes those borrowed standby endpoints, racing io_worker RDHUP teardown if run
off-thread (bug-1197 family). Flag OFF keeps push+teardown serialized on the
io_worker. Task 3.4 flips this ON together with the snapshot and peerctrl flags
after establishing endpoint-lifetime discipline.

test_configpush_inline_when_flag_off, test_configpush_offload_dedups.

Part B (LIVE, default-ON): trim_wal_segments now bounds WAL-segment deletion
by repl_trim_lsn(&p->repl, active_seg_lsn) = min(active segment LSN, every
active standby acked_lsn, every valid disconnected-slot last_disconnected_lsn),
after repl_expire_disconnect_slots ages out stale slot guards. floor <=
active_seg_lsn structurally, so the guard can only preserve more segments,
never delete one a live standby still needs — closes the bug-795/828
trim-vs-cursor race for connected/recently-disconnected standbys (bug-1147
stopgap; empty/cursor=0 join still needs entity-bearing snapshots).
Part A (DORMANT, g_drive_async_snapshot_offload default OFF): ha_snapshot_send_
dispatch routes HA_REPL_SEND_SNAPSHOT inline (flag OFF — byte-for-byte legacy,
on io_worker) or to slowlane_submit+snapshot_lane_fn (flag ON). Send body
factored into ha_snapshot_do_send. Per-peer single-flight via
ha_state_t.snapshot_inflight[] CAS + slowlane key; in-flight flag cleared on
all four terminal paths, mirroring the reconnect offload (task 2.1).
Lands dormant like task 3.1: snapshot_lane_fn borrows a standby endpoint it
does not own, so flag-ON would race io_worker RDHUP teardown (cross-thread UAF,
bug-1197 family). Flag OFF keeps send+teardown serialized on the io_worker.
Task 3.4 is the single gate that flips both this and the peerctrl flag ON after
establishing endpoint-lifetime discipline; bug-1198 stays open by design until
then. The offload flag was initially authored default-ON (would ship the UAF)
and corrected to OFF in ha.c and the ha.h accessor doc (bug-1210).

Lands the PeerCtrlDispatch machinery behind a DEFAULT-OFF flag
(g_drive_async_peerctrl_dispatch_enabled); production behavior is
UNCHANGED. peer_ctrl_msg_handler becomes a thin shim that takes
ownership of ep->fsm_in.pkt and either runs the routing body inline
(flag OFF, byte-for-byte the prior path) or dispatches it to the vtask
pool via vtask_enq_classified (flag ON). The 3 routers now take pkt as
an explicit param (no cross-thread ep->fsm_in.pkt re-read). Per-endpoint
arrival order is enforced by bind_vtask's endpoint_block_tasks.
Packet ownership: shim clears ep->fsm_in.pkt at dispatch (sole-owner
transfer); peer_ctrl_vtask_entry NULLs iod->pkt before the body frees
it once. New vtask_t.owns_io_pkt (default 0) lets taskq_item_killer free
the carried packet for an un-executed queued task at vtaskmgr_fini WITHOUT
double-freeing the libxce endpoint-owned path (bug-1199).
Adversarial review found two FLAG-ON hazards, documented with loud
comments (flag is OFF so production is unaffected), to be resolved before
task 3.4 flips the flag ON:
- bug-1197 (CRITICAL): raft_cb_become_follower endpoint_fini()s peer
vote-eps from a pool worker, racing the io_worker's read of ep->data;
needs iomgr_unmonitor before endpoint_fini in every pool-reachable
teardown.
- bug-1198 (HIGH): peer_ctrl_classify tags all work VTASK_LIVENESS, but
the CTRL_PRIMARY repl-ack path can run a blocking snapshot checkpoint
inline; resolved by task 3.2 (offload snapshot to SlowLane).
Per spec, 3.1 is not 'done' until the task 3.4 deadlock gate is green.
Tests: 3 new peerctrl tests; controller 196/196, lib 282/0; 0 net leaks.
When a reconnect registers a new outbound control channel for peer X,
on_standby_connected now evicts any pre-existing standby_endpoints entry
for the same peer_idx (a promoted vote-ep or a stale prior channel),
keeping exactly one live outbound channel per peer (Req 2.6/4.4). The
stale ep is torn down OUTSIDE ha->lock via standby_ep_err_handler_primary
(which re-takes the lock) and reclaimed; resolution is strictly per-peer.
Also fixes endpoint leaks on the endpoint_get() calloc paths: every
endpoint_fini() error path now free(ep) (fini reclaims inner members
only), closing the task-2.1 GREEN-test leak masked by detect_leaks=0.
Tests 18-19 in test_ha_liveness.c assert single-survivor resolution and
per-peer isolation. 196/196 controller unit tests pass.
Heartbeat timer detects a disconnected peer, CAS-acquires a per-peer
single-flight flag, slowlane_submits the bounded connect, and returns — the
delaymgr never blocks on connect. Lane worker (reconnect_lane_fn) does the
bounded endpoint_connect + lock-guarded iomgr_monitor; flag cleared on all
terminal paths (incl. -EEXIST race fix). Default-ON kill-switch retains the
inline path for TDD-RED/fallback. Never self-terminates on failure. 2.2 adds
the inbound/outbound race + failure hardening (documented seam). 196/0 green.
socket_connect sets O_NONBLOCK before connect and bounds the attempt with
poll(timeout); new connect_timeout_ms param (0=DEFAULT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_MS);
all 5 callers updated (ha.c x3, client.c, xcectx.c). Revalidation Trigger:
shared netio helper signature changed. Broad build links all components;
xcelib_test 278/0, controller_unit_test 194/0. 1.4/1.5 unit tests satisfied
by the TDD output of 1.2/1.3 (test_slowlane.c, test_netio_bounded_connect.c).
drive_async_liveness_reserved = max(1, min(n_peers-1, n_vcpus-1)) — single
source of truth for VTASK_LIVENESS_RESERVED (deadlock-freedom floor applied
last). New DEFAULT_CONNECT_TIMEOUT_MS / DEFAULT_SLOWLANE_* constants. Resolved
reservation logged at init; under-provisioned (n_vcpus<n_peers) clamp WARNs
loudly, never self-terminates. 8 unit cases, mutation-verified.
ROOT CAUSE (confirmed via live instrumentation — NOT a durability violation):
ha_enter_real_election truncated the WAL to last_known_committed_lsn BEFORE the
vote. That watermark lags the true commit point (the primary committed LSN 2-5 on
a durable majority then died before a heartbeat carried committed=5 to the
standby), so the cutoff was 1; persist_truncate_wal_above -> clamp_durable_lsn
lowered the standby's durable_lsn 5->1, physically destroying durably-committed
entries before the election even computed the safe point. The candidate then
advertised floor=1, safe_committed_lsn=1, and the post-election truncate kept only
LSN 1. This directly violated the documented rule: 'Never use last_known_committed
_lsn for truncation — it may be stale.'
FIX: delete the premature truncate. The candidate keeps its full durable log; the
ONLY truncates are now the authoritative votes-derived post-election
persist_truncate_wal_above(safe_committed_lsn) (raft_cb_become_leader) + the
library on_truncate_from (term,lsn) reconcile — both before any commit under the
new leader.
SAFE (reviewer-verified): a divergent uncommitted tail can only exist at a
stale/lower term (single-writer); the library's term-primary (lastLogTerm,
lastLogIndex) freshness gate denies such a candidate — correct now that task 3.4
fixed the term axis (the prerequisite). No divergent entry can win-and-commit; no
bug-339 election-loop. 177 unit tests + a RED-proven regression test.
LIVE: clean failover now preserves committed jobs — walcompare committed-prefix
identical across all 3 members, both jobs present on disk, across multiple runs.
(Residual harness EXIT 1 is the SEPARATE pre-existing libxce client bug-854:
client can't reach the live primary when the dead node is first in the masters
list — a client-discovery defect, orthogonal to server-side data safety.)
Clean failover was truncating committed jobs because the post-election
safe-commit-from-votes computation was dead: vote_reply_dispatch decoded each
granting voter's advertised peerLastLogLsn but discarded it, so ha_compute_safe
_committed_lsn saw only the self-vote (the 'from 1 granted voters' fingerprint)
and truncated to self_lsn.
Part 1: vote_reply_dispatch now records the granting voter's (lsn,tag,grant) into
ctx->votes[] via a record-only ha_record_vote_reply seam (no double-promotion;
raft_on_vote_reply stays the sole production promotion driver) — so safe-commit
reflects the true voted majority.
Part 2: the candidate/voter advertise the real DURABLE (fsync'd) tip; persist_wal
_write_replicated advances durable_lsn after its fail-loud inline fdatasync.
Reviewer-verified SAFE (advertises only durable positions; safe-commit bounded by
the durable majority, preserving more committed entries, never marking a
non-majority-durable LSN safe). 177 unit tests; new test_ha_vote_gate + election
tests green.
PARTIAL: does NOT yet make the live clean-failover pass. A deeper slice of
bug-828/795 remains — a catch-up'd standby still under-advertises its durable
position in the live run (the documented architectural catch-up/durability gap),
so a job-less node can still win and truncate. Tracked for a dedicated effort.
Two coupled fixes for a live commit-stall (committed_lsn pinned at the own-term
NOOP while a 3-node cluster was durable to LSN 5 — jobs acked but never committed):
bug-991: the WAL catch-up applied_lsn was advanced to lsn+1 (next-to-apply) in
the three live/catch-up apply paths, but recovery/checkpoint/init and the leader's
catch-up streamer treat it as last-held. The over-advertise made the streamer skip
an LSN -> library logOk wedge -> no WalAck. Fixed to last-held (= lsn).
Option A (design reconsideration of REVIEW ISSUE 3): removed the
committed = min(durable-majority, raft_commit_index) ceiling. Under single-writer
the durable-majority watermark is already (term,lsn)-current-term-safe (term-carrying
replication + (term,lsn) reconcile/truncate-before-durable + own-term NOOP gate +
post-election truncate-to-safe), so the library commit_index was a redundant,
starvation-prone gate that pinned committed below the safe durable majority whenever
the library lagged. The durable-majority barrier + own-term writable gate are now
authoritative; raft_commit_index is inert-advisory.
Safety: reviewer-verified the durable-majority watermark is (term,lsn)-safe and
Figure-8 holds via the own-term gate (new RED->GREEN test); bug-851 cannot recur.
Live: commit trace 4->5 + walcompare committed-prefix identical across 3 nodes.
177 unit tests pass.
Closes bug-990: the live replicator repl_broadcast wire-encoded term=0
(entry.term was never set), so standbys persisted hdr.term=0 and took the
legacy direct-apply path instead of the library (term,lsn) intake. Now the
live broadcast and catch-up streamer carry the leader's real term + AE prev
tuple; ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry routes every term-carrying entry through
raft_on_append_entries_request -> on_persist_entry (leader term stamped),
retiring the term-0 direct-apply. Standbys now persist the leader's real term
and reconcile by (term,lsn); the live commit chain is end-to-end.
848/849/850 + persist-before-ACK + commit-barrier + bug-960 preserved.
Proven at integration level; the definitive live STRICT_TERM failover run is
env-blocked here (bug-924 overlayfs) and recommended on a real fs.
Wires config_committed_marker to a production consumer (config_activate_committed):
verifies pushed bytes' sha256 against the committed marker before activation, fences
(loud, non-serving, stay-alive) on mismatch, and activates the latest committed marker
on recovery. Enforced via ha_dispatch_gate + promotion gate.
Fixes bug-981: a 2nd+ config upgrade could permanently fence a standby on a
push-before-commit ordering. Adds an off-iomgr delaymgr retry scheduled from the
commit-advance hook (atomic read + non-blocking enqueue only on the ACK thread) that
re-activates and clears the stale fence once the new marker commits and bytes verify.
Includes fix for bug-960: endpoint-type-aware peer-index resolution
(promoted-vote relative vs heartbeat-standby absolute) with fail-loud
bounds check, preventing an out-of-bounds match_index[] write / wrong-peer
false-quorum on the replication ACK path.
Replaces the stub: builds a WalCatchupEntry AppendEntries to standbys[peer_idx].ep
carrying prev_log_index/prev_log_term; for n_entries==1 sources the entry at
prev_log_index+1 from the local WAL (term via persist_entry_term, type+payload via
ha_read_wal_entry_at); n_entries==0 emits a zero-entry heartbeat. Async send
(xce_wal_batch_req_raw), payload freed on all paths. 2 tests via a capture seam.
Review-applied: corrected the misleading repl.c comment — leader_commit is accepted
but NOT yet wire-encoded (deferred to task 3.2: WalCatchupEntry leaderCommit field +
standby intake). Reviewer APPROVED; per-group 0 failures.
on_get_entry_term → persist_entry_term (recorded term, 0=absent, legacy-0→1; caveat
documented per 1.3 review). on_truncate_from → persist_truncate_wal_above(p, index-1)
(delete LSN>=index), returns rc for library/leader retry; non-promotable fence intact;
replaces the committed-boundary heuristic on the library-driven path. New
truncate_term_index_locked keeps the in-memory per-LSN term index consistent on both
truncate paths (under lock, cutoff-aligned) → no stale-term read after truncation.
3 tests, reviewer APPROVED, per-group 0 failures.
