Found via the mandatory live HA chaotic soak for this session's controller
audit campaign -- unrelated to any of the 9 audit fixes (bug-1684/1687/
1689/1690/1691/1692/1693/1694), all in ha.c/persist.c/job.c/cluster.c/
sched.c/worker.c; this is in myapp.c, untouched by any of them.
myapp_run()'s bootstrap "is a leader already known" check had a fallback
`c.ha.raft.term > 0` meant to detect genuine new raft activity processed
during the startup-stagger nap. But ha_restore_term() loads ha->term from
disk BEFORE this check runs, on every boot -- and Raft terms only ever
increase, never reset. So `raft.term > 0` is trivially true on every
restart for the rest of the cluster's on-disk lifetime, once it has ever
held one election, regardless of whether any leader is currently
reachable. Live-reproduced: every node, on every restart after the
cluster's first election, unconditionally skipped ha_start_election_async
forever -- no node could ever re-assert leadership through a real
election again. bug-1477's existing cluster_init_phase2 retry loop kept
firing correctly (confirmed in the reproduction logs) but could never
succeed, since the deeper cause -- no election ever runs to produce a
live primary to push config from -- was never addressed by that fix.
Fixed by snapshotting `term_at_boot` right after ha_restore_term()/
ha_init_raft() seed the term, strictly before the stagger nap, and
comparing `raft.term > term_at_boot` instead of `raft.term > 0` -- only a
term that has genuinely ADVANCED during this boot cycle (real vote/
heartbeat traffic processed) counts as evidence a leader is known. The
decision was extracted into a new, unit-testable myapp_leader_already_known()
(startup_validation.c, since controller_unit_test deliberately excludes
myapp.c/main.c). voted_for_name/vft==cur and primary_ctrl_fd>=0 checks
are unchanged.
7 new tests in test_ha_startup.c; RED/GREEN independently verified.
Rigorous A/B live-soak proof (identical 6-round --chaotic run, fixed vs
git-stashed-back-to-original): baseline showed term frozen for the whole
run and zero election activity on any non-primary node; fixed run showed
term genuinely progressing and ctrl-2 achieving a real, log-verified
CTRL_PRIMARY transition via a won PreVote round -- proof a node other
than the original primary can now take over, which was structurally
impossible before. Full controller suite: 1191 tests, 2 failures -- both
the pre-existing, unrelated bug-1561 overlayfs sandbox flake.
Residual, NOT independently verified yet (flagged honestly, not fixed
here): the fixed run's chaotic verdict showed committed_job_loss=6
(baseline 0) -- traced via waldump to one jobid missing from every node's
WAL, at the cold-boot window before round 1. Resembles the already-fixed
bug-1487 false-positive class (apply-pump-lag racing verify_classify's
expect-job check) but the reported mechanism doesn't perfectly match
(bug-1487's job was present-in-WAL/not-yet-visible; this one is described
as absent from every WAL entirely) -- needs independent re-verification
before being dismissed, tracked as a follow-up.

A node that takes myapp_run's skip_election passive path (bug-849 --
"leader already known after the startup stagger") makes exactly ONE
cluster_init_phase2 attempt. All 5 call sites (myapp.c's skip_election
block, raft_cb_become_leader, raft_cb_become_follower,
ha_elect_evaluate_and_signal's two branches) latched ha->phase2_done = 1
unconditionally after calling cluster_init_phase2, discarding its return
value. If that one attempt raced config availability and failed, the node
was permanently stranded: commit_engine_init never ran, so
apply_committed_entry never applied any committed WAL entry for the rest
of the process's life -- and for a skip_election node specifically,
nothing else would ever retry it, since the other 4 call sites only fire
via that node's own raft-library state transitions, which never happen
for a passive standby whose primary keeps heartbeating normally.
Extracted a shared, idempotent retry (ha_phase2_retry_fn, mirrors
upgrade_materialization_retry_fn's shape) plus a delaymgr-scheduled,
self-rescheduling trigger (ha_schedule_phase2_retry) -- self-rescheduling
because, unlike config_activate_retry/upgrade_materialization_retry which
are re-triggered externally by recurring commit-advance events, nothing
else recurs for a node stuck on the passive path. Wired into all 5 call
sites; raft_cb_become_leader additionally refuses promotion on failure
(mirroring the sibling upgrade_materialization_fenced refusal already in
that function -- a promoted primary with an unwired commit engine is far
worse than a delayed promotion).
TDD: 4 new tests, RED confirmed by temporarily reverting the rc-gating.
GREEN: full suite 1044 tests, 0 failures. Live-verified via
run-ha-soak.sh --config-upgrade (the scenario that found this bug): the
retry fires for real (4 failed attempts, then success) and the soak's
checkpoint-identity/config-identity/host-admin-status assertions -- the
things bug-1477 blocked -- all pass.
Wires task 6.1's upgrade_materialization_verify/upgrade_materialization_fenced
into ha_dispatch_gate's CTRL_PRIMARY branch (sequential block alongside,
not merged into, the existing config_serve_fenced check -- same
replication/read-only opcode allowlist, refuses state-changing ops
with -XCE_ERR_NOT_READY while fenced) and the promotion gate
(raft_cb_become_leader refuses to become CTRL_PRIMARY while fenced,
introduces no new WAL/log-completeness eligibility mechanism, never
self-terminates). Adds a 4-function self-triggering retry trampoline
(upgrade_materialization_retry_fn/_vtask_entry/_delaymgr_trampoline/
schedule_upgrade_materialization_retry) mirroring
config_activate_retry_fn's exact shape, hooked into
ha_cb_commit_advanced_stub alongside the existing config-byte retry.
Fixes a real bug caught on review: the fence had no production path
that could ever engage it from its zero-initialized default -- every
setter call site was gated on the fence already being set (closed
loop), making the new gate checks permanently dead code. Fixed with
two unconditional upgrade_materialization_verify() call sites:
persist.c's apply_committed_entry WAL_CONFIG_MARKER case (right after
persist_checkpoint_marker_triggered returns, regardless of its rc) and
myapp.c's boot sequence (right after config_activate_committed, for
Req 5.2 crash/restart resume). New test drives the fence through the
real production trigger (a forced -EBUSY checkpoint miss on a real
marker commit+apply), not a direct verify() call, proving the
end-to-end path actually works. Task 6.2 of 19.
Requirements: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 4.3, 5.5
Adds --factstream HA soak mode driving real jstart/jfinish/jfail worker-fact
traffic against a live 3-node cluster, killing the primary mid-stream and
asserting zero committed-state divergence and zero phantom fact reactions.
Building this scenario surfaced bug-1416: persist_recover()'s boot-time
apply-correctness verification can race the live apply pump and the standby
live-replication apply path, both of which mutate the same last_applied_lsn/
job-table state the verification re-reads live -- producing a false
APPLY_DIVERGENT that permanently fences an otherwise-healthy node. Fixed with
a new persist_t.recovery_complete gate that defers only the in-memory apply
(never the durability write or replication ACK) while a recovery pass is in
flight, closed from the earliest safe point in myapp_run() so an election-
retry candidate can't apply live traffic before persist_recover() ever runs.
Round-2 adversarial review independently verified the ACK/durability paths
stay ungated, reproduced the myapp.c fix as load-bearing via revert-and-
reproduce, and confirmed real-divergence detection still fires. Live 3-node
factstream soak: 2/2 rounds PASS, zero APPLY_DIVERGENT across 5 recover
calls. controller_unit_test: zero new failures across 23 groups.
Chain of fixes needed to get --force-snapshot soak to a real live PASS
(raft-ha-core-safety task 5.10a / ha-entity-snapshots task 7.1):
1. WAL segment rotation was gated on a hardcoded 64MB compile-time
constant; trim_wal_segments() never deletes the active (currently-open)
segment. At soak job counts a segment never rotated, so nothing was
ever physically trimmable and ha_evaluate_repl_action always chose
STREAM_WAL over SEND_SNAPSHOT for an empty-rejoining node. Fixed by
threading a wal_segment_bytes override through persist_config_t
(mirrors the --max-wal-records pattern: config.h default, persist.h
setter, persist.c 3 usage sites + minimum-floor enforcement, 6-point
CLI wiring through main.c/myconf.h/myapp.c/cluster.c) plus a new
--wal-segment-bytes CLI flag. run-ha-soak.sh's --force-snapshot mode
now sets WAL_SEGMENT_BYTES=4096 to force real rotation at soak scale.
2. This unmasked a genuine heap-use-after-free in INVOKE_MSG_HANDLER
(include/netio.h): the macro calls ep->msg_handler(ep) synchronously
(not via the vtask dispatcher, so the bug-1298 vtask ref/unref pairing
doesn't cover it) then writes ep->fsm_in.pkt = NULL. A stale vote-reply
handler chain (raft_on_vote_reply -> raft_cb_become_follower ->
endpoint_unref) could drop the endpoint's last ref and free it inside
the handler call, so the trailing write hit freed memory. This is the
first-ever live exercise of a node receiving a snapshot transfer while
mid-election. Fixed by holding a ref across the synchronous call, same
pattern task 5.8 established for the async path.
With both fixes: --force-snapshot soak now PASSES live (committed
divergence=0, job_loss=0, confirmed real "HA: snapshot" install on the
restarted node) — first genuine live proof of this scenario. 3-round
--chaotic regression clean. Full 217-test controller suite green
before/after every fix in the chain.
Builds on the delaymgr starvation fix (b9ad018) and walcompare
checkpoint-floor fix (f3c86a6) from earlier in this investigation.
Adds --max-wal-records (mirrors the existing --wal-sync-ms pattern:
main.c argp option -> myconf_t -> persist_config_set_max_wal_records())
so a deployment can force the WAL-record-count checkpoint trigger to
fire on a job count a soak can actually reach, instead of the
production default of 10000.
Adds a new `--force-snapshot` soak mode (run-ha-soak.sh): submits
enough jobs to cross the configured threshold, kills a non-primary
node, wipes its data dir (a genuine empty rejoin), restarts it, and
asserts the cluster reconverges with zero walcompare divergence and
zero job loss. Fails loud (not a false PASS) if the restarted node's
log shows no actual snapshot install, so the round can't silently
report success without exercising the real scenario.
INVESTIGATION FINDING (not yet resolved, this commit does not close
5.10a or ha-entity-snapshots 7.1): live-tested with temporary
diagnostic logging (since reverted). schedule_checkpoint() correctly
fires once wal_record_count reaches the configured threshold
(confirmed: "wal_record_count=100 max=100" logged), but the delaymgr-
scheduled checkpoint_task_fn never executes afterward -- no checkpoint
ever completes, no snapshot file is ever written, in a live multi-node
deployment. This is a separate, deeper issue in the delaymgr scheduling
path (or its wiring for this specific call shape), not a bug in this
commit's CLI plumbing or soak scaffolding -- both are built, tested,
and confirmed working up to the point where the async checkpoint
should run. Needs its own dedicated investigation (likely src/lib
delaymgr, not persist.c) before --force-snapshot can produce a PASS.
This also has production implications beyond the test scenario: if
confirmed, WAL checkpoints may never fire automatically today, meaning
WAL segments are never trimmed via this path in a live deployment.
controller_unit_test: test_ha_startup 34/0, test_ha_core_safety 28/0,
test_persist_checkpoint 5/0, test_walcompare 17/0 (no regression).
Soak --selftest 17/17.
Wires config_committed_marker to a production consumer (config_activate_committed):
verifies pushed bytes' sha256 against the committed marker before activation, fences
(loud, non-serving, stay-alive) on mismatch, and activates the latest committed marker
on recovery. Enforced via ha_dispatch_gate + promotion gate.
Fixes bug-981: a 2nd+ config upgrade could permanently fence a standby on a
push-before-commit ordering. Adds an off-iomgr delaymgr retry scheduled from the
commit-advance hook (atomic read + non-blocking enqueue only on the ACK thread) that
re-activates and clears the stale fence once the new marker commits and bytes verify.
Two distinct HA livelocks, both verified on a live 3-node ASAN deploy
(kill+restart of primary and standby, plus SIGSTOP wedge injection).
bug-339 — election freshness-floor asymmetry (RDHUP failover path):
After the primary dies the two survivors could never elect a leader — both
only ever became follower while terms climbed in lockstep. The RDHUP candidate
advertised c->persist.committed_lsn, which a standby never advances (only the
primary commit engine writes it), while every voter computed its freshness floor
from max(applied_lsn, last_known_committed_lsn). So each survivor advertised a
stale-low LSN against a high voter floor and the freshness gate denied on both
sides. Fix: compute the candidate LSN via ha_vote_self_freshness so the
advertised value equals the voter floor (ha_on_primary_ctrl_fd_rdhup); also route
the boot-path election (myapp_run) through the same helper for symmetry.
bug-340 — wedged standby endpoint suppressed reconnect (rejoin path):
A killed/restarted peer's outbound endpoint on the primary could wedge (epoll
re-arm ENOENT) yet stay in standby_endpoints, so primary_heartbeat_fn's reconnect
scan treated the peer as still-connected and never re-established a ctrlhello
channel — the restarted node never heard from the primary and re-elected every
heartbeat_timeout (term climbing unbounded). xce_nop_req returns success on
enqueue even when the send can't progress, so the heartbeat layer never noticed.
Fix: primary_heartbeat_fn now evicts a standby that was responsive once
(ts_last_in > 0) but has been silent past heartbeat_timeout — symmetric with the
standby's own liveness poll — and the reconnect scan re-establishes the channel.
Uses existing endpoint_t.ts_last_in (no libnetio change).
Tests (RED->GREEN):
- test_ha_rdhup_integration: candidate advertises freshness floor, not stale committed_lsn
- test_ha_liveness: evicts_silent_standby + keeps_live/keeps_unconfirmed (no false eviction)
Election protocol fixes validated against raft.tla invariants:
- ha_init_raft(): one-time raft state init at startup (re-init would lose
durable election progress); n_peers = full cluster size including self
- handle_request_vote(): higher-term step-down moved BEFORE the role gate
(split-brain fix); standby vote-deny now requires a live primary control
channel (primary_ctrl_fd >= 0) AND a fresh heartbeat
- ha_heartbeat_is_fresh(): derive freshness from ha->last_activity (the
field production actually writes); the orphaned last_heartbeat timespec
had no production writer, leaving the vote-deny gate inert (bug-337);
field removed from ha_state_t
- handle_request_vote(): restore same-candidate idempotent re-grant —
deny only a DIFFERENT candidate in the same term, matching raft.c and
Raft §5.2 votedFor ∈ {Nil, candidateId} (bug-338)
- raft_init(): restore voted_for_term alongside a persisted vote; leaving
it 0 allowed a double vote in the same term across a restart (bug-339)
- myapp_run(): leader_known check treats a vote recorded under this node's
own name as a self-vote — production persists the real candidate name,
the "self" placeholder only appears in test mode
- raft_on_vote_request(): leader steps down on higher-term vote request
instead of denying it
Tests: test_proto_H6_restored_vote_blocks_second_vote added; H1 restore
assertion strengthened; test_ha_vote_gate.c driven through last_activity +
primary_ctrl_fd (the real production fields). Full /xce-build all green
(lib + controller + scheduler + Go suites, 0 failures, ASAN clean).
deploy-ha.sh: start.sh now forwards extra args to the controller binary.
Two Raft correctness fixes:
1. Priority staggering in ha_wait_for_heartbeat_or_timeout():
Add my_priority × election_priority_step_ms to the timeout so
ctrl-a (priority=0) times out first and starts election before
ctrl-b (priority=1) and ctrl-c (priority=2). This gives the
highest-priority node a head start and prevents simultaneous
campaigning that causes perpetual split votes.
2. candidate_id in vote RPC:
Pass the actual node name (myconf->name) as candidate_id instead
of "". This fixes the voted_for deduplication gate (Req 2.6):
a peer that already voted for ctrl-a will correctly deny a
second vote request from ctrl-b in the same term.
Thread context gets my_name field; am_i_primary_quorum() takes
my_name parameter; all call sites updated (myapp.c, ha.c RDHUP,
test_ha_election.c stubs).
Replace single 2-round election attempt with an infinite retry loop:
1. ha_wait_for_heartbeat_or_timeout() — catch existing primary's heartbeat
(→ STANDBY immediately) or timeout and proceed to election
2. am_i_primary_quorum() — run 2-round election
(→ PRIMARY if won, otherwise loop back to step 1)
Nodes now retry indefinitely until one wins a quorum. On split vote
or no-peer-reachable scenarios the node loops back; on the next
heartbeat wait, it either catches the winning primary's heartbeat
(→ STANDBY) or times out and tries again with a higher term and
randomized jitter (Raft's split-vote resolution mechanism).
This is the core Raft liveness property: as long as a majority of
nodes are reachable, the cluster eventually elects a leader.
1. iomgr_monitor double-register: cluster_start skips iomgr_monitor
if c->ep was already registered by cluster_register_listener
(ep->flags non-zero after successful registration). Previously
returned EEXIST → -1 → "Operation not permitted" crash.
2. ASAN stack-use-after-return: cluster_fini now calls iomgr_stop()
before iomgr_fini() to join the worker thread before the cluster_t
stack frame is reclaimed by the caller.
3. Election timing: add ha_wait_for_heartbeat_or_timeout() before
election in myapp_run. If an existing primary sends a heartbeat,
node becomes STANDBY immediately without competing in election.
If timeout expires (no primary running), proceed to election.
This prevents ctrl-a from immediately losing when ctrl-b/c are
not yet started — it now waits election_timeout_ms (2s) first.
vote_request_thread connects to peers via SSL. iomgr was started before
election but c->ep was only registered with epoll inside cluster_start(),
which runs after election. The TCP connect succeeded (kernel accepts it)
but SSL_accept was never called server-side, so SSL_connect failed
immediately — both vote threads went to deny in <1ms and ctrl-a could
never win a quorum.
Fix: add cluster_register_listener() that wires c->ep into iomgr's
epoll watch. Call it from myapp_run() right after iomgr_start/vtaskmgr_start,
before election. cluster_start() still calls iomgr_monitor again
(idempotent via EPOLL_CTL_MOD).
- Probe all peers: any tag>0 -> defer_config_fetch=true; all-zero -> proceed;
none reachable -> exponential backoff 500ms->10s cap with WARN per attempt
- Wire into myapp.c: before ha_wait_for_heartbeat_or_timeout()
- Post-election: defer_config_fetch && CTRL_STANDBY -> fetch_config_from_primary()
- INFO log for all three bootstrap outcomes (Req 10.2)
- XCE_TESTING hook for probe mock; test_ha_bootstrap_support.c installs mock
- 9/9 bootstrap tests GREEN, 141/141 full suite GREEN
- Add --vcpus N argp option in main.c; store in myconf.vcpus
- Replace inline argp guard with validate_vcpus() call (returns -EINVAL for <=0)
- Add validate_startup_config() in startup_validation.c: returns 0; writes
deprecation warning into caller-supplied warn_buf when vcpus key present
- Wire validate_startup_config() into myapp_run() after conffile resolved;
emit WARN() if warn_buf non-empty (Req 4.4)
- Remove vcpus field from cluster_config_t (clusterconfig.h)
- Preserve capnp ordinal: vcpus @7 -> vcpusDeprecated @7: Void in controller.capnp
- vtaskmgr_init uses only myconf->vcpus with hardcoded default 8
- Add stub C types in typemap.h for capnp schema extensions from task 1.1
- 96 tests pass
- myapp.c: capture am_i_primary() into is_primary (avoids redundant
second probe call); after load_primary_config() succeeds, record
CTRL_PRIMARY role via atomic_store_explicit so cluster_init_phase2()
sees the correct role (ha_init() defaults to CTRL_STANDBY)
- myapp.c: add #include "ha.h" for CTRL_PRIMARY, atomic_store_explicit,
and memory_order_release
- cluster.c: cluster_init() wrapper now calls cluster_fini(c) before
returning on create_ssl_context failure, hook failure, and
cluster_init_phase2 failure — prevents SSL ctx and phase1 resource leak
