Extract cluster_init_managers() which initializes configmgr, jobmgr,
resmgr, workermgr, qmgr, sharedinst, xstrings, endpoints, and job_obj.
Call it from cluster_init_phase1 (after init_controller_tunables) so
all managers exist before election.
This fixes the heap-buffer-overflow in handle_connection: incoming
OP_requestVote SSL connections arrive during the pre-election phase
and call zarray_store(&c->endpoints) — which requires endpoints to
be initialized first.
cluster_init_phase2 is simplified: it no longer re-initializes these
managers and only sets up iomgr/SSL, opens the listener, and loads
cluster-config-dependent data.
Add ctrl_tunables struct to cluster_t with per-table fields:
jobmgr_nhash/delta, workermgr_nhash/delta, qmgr_nhash/delta,
resmgr_nhash/delta/inst, xstrings_nhash
init_controller_tunables() sets defaults (jobs=512, others=128)
and is called from cluster_init_phase1 so values are available
before cluster_init_phase2. Phase2 reads from c->tunables instead
of cluster_config or local #defines.
Each table gets its own values since they hold different item counts:
jobs can scale to hundreds, workers/queues/resources are typically
single-digit to tens.
Replace cluster_config-dependent hash sizes with compile-time constants
(CTRL_PERF_NHASH=512, CTRL_PERF_DELTA=64, CTRL_PERF_INST=64) for:
jobmgr, workermgr, qmgr, resmgr, xstrings
These are controller performance tuning parameters (capnp fields @13–@17)
that have no config generation tool yet. Using hardcoded defaults unblocks
cluster startup without requiring these fields in the config blob.
TODO: wire back to cluster_config once config generation tool is ready.
1. iomgr_monitor double-register: cluster_start skips iomgr_monitor
if c->ep was already registered by cluster_register_listener
(ep->flags non-zero after successful registration). Previously
returned EEXIST → -1 → "Operation not permitted" crash.
2. ASAN stack-use-after-return: cluster_fini now calls iomgr_stop()
before iomgr_fini() to join the worker thread before the cluster_t
stack frame is reclaimed by the caller.
3. Election timing: add ha_wait_for_heartbeat_or_timeout() before
election in myapp_run. If an existing primary sends a heartbeat,
node becomes STANDBY immediately without competing in election.
If timeout expires (no primary running), proceed to election.
This prevents ctrl-a from immediately losing when ctrl-b/c are
not yet started — it now waits election_timeout_ms (2s) first.
vote_request_thread connects to peers via SSL. iomgr was started before
election but c->ep was only registered with epoll inside cluster_start(),
which runs after election. The TCP connect succeeded (kernel accepts it)
but SSL_accept was never called server-side, so SSL_connect failed
immediately — both vote threads went to deny in <1ms and ctrl-a could
never win a quorum.
Fix: add cluster_register_listener() that wires c->ep into iomgr's
epoll watch. Call it from myapp_run() right after iomgr_start/vtaskmgr_start,
before election. cluster_start() still calls iomgr_monitor again
(idempotent via EPOLL_CTL_MOD).
The vote_request_thread was sending raw capnp(RequestVoteRequest) bytes
but the server-side iomgr decodes every incoming packet as a Request
struct. This caused the term field (uint64) to be misread as the opcode
field (uint16), so vote RPCs were silently misrouted (term=1 → OPCode_reply,
term=2 → OPCode_hello) and no node ever got a vote from its peers.
Fix:
- controller.capnp: add requestvotemsg @27 to Request.body and
requestvotereplymsg @14 to RequestReply.data
- typemap.h: move request_vote_req_t/reply_t before xce_request_t;
add requestvotemsg/requestvotereplymsg to body/data unions
- ha.c: rewrite vote_request_thread send/recv to use xce_encode()
wrapper and decode outer Request→inner RequestReply on receive
- cluster.c: add case OPCode_requestVote handler calling
handle_request_vote() and replying via xce_reply()
All 188 unit tests pass.
- errnox.h: add E_XCE_NOT_READY and E_XCE_STANDBY error codes with
extern int XCE_ERR_NOT_READY / XCE_ERR_STANDBY runtime variables
- ha.h: declare ha_dispatch_gate(ha_state_t *, int opcode)
- ha.c: define XCE_ERR_* variables; initialize heartbeat_seen semaphore
and primary_ctrl_fd = -1 in ha_init(); sem_destroy in ha_fini();
implement ha_dispatch_gate() with allowlist for CTRL_INIT/CTRL_ELECTING
(only OP_requestVote and OP_probeConfigTag pass) and CTRL_STANDBY
(replication, election, and housekeeping ops pass; primary-only ops
return -XCE_ERR_STANDBY)
- cluster.c: wire ha_dispatch_gate() in myreq_handler() before opcode
switch; gate failure sends error reply and returns early
All 393 unit tests pass. Satisfies requirements 1.3 and 1.4.
- Implement validate_peer_count() in startup_validation.c: -EINVAL for even N>1
- Implement validate_cert_files() with err_buf output: access() check, writes
missing path into err_buf, returns -ENOENT
- Wire validate_peer_count() in main.c after peer list parse; fatal exit on fail
- Wire validate_cert_files() in main.c before SSL init; fatal exit on fail
- Fix ASAN leak: SSL_CTX_free in ha_fini() with NULL guard
- Fix double-free: null c->ha.ssl_ctx in cluster_fini() before ha_fini(),
so iomgr_fini() retains sole SSL_CTX ownership (design per ha.h comment)
- All 96 tests pass; all 12 ha_startup tests GREEN
- Add --vcpus N argp option in main.c; store in myconf.vcpus
- Replace inline argp guard with validate_vcpus() call (returns -EINVAL for <=0)
- Add validate_startup_config() in startup_validation.c: returns 0; writes
deprecation warning into caller-supplied warn_buf when vcpus key present
- Wire validate_startup_config() into myapp_run() after conffile resolved;
emit WARN() if warn_buf non-empty (Req 4.4)
- Remove vcpus field from cluster_config_t (clusterconfig.h)
- Preserve capnp ordinal: vcpus @7 -> vcpusDeprecated @7: Void in controller.capnp
- vtaskmgr_init uses only myconf->vcpus with hardcoded default 8
- Add stub C types in typemap.h for capnp schema extensions from task 1.1
- 96 tests pass
Pre-decode opcode peek in myreq_handler() captures raw packet bytes for
OP_upgradeConfig before xce_decode() frees the capnp segment. Passes
raw bytes to xce_upgrade_config_req_extract_raw() to extract sha256 and
config blob, then delegates to do_upgrade_config_with_bytes().
Removes Task 11 dependency. Phase 2 still gated by CONF_ENABLE_UPGRADE_CONFIG.
- myapp.c: capture am_i_primary() into is_primary (avoids redundant
second probe call); after load_primary_config() succeeds, record
CTRL_PRIMARY role via atomic_store_explicit so cluster_init_phase2()
sees the correct role (ha_init() defaults to CTRL_STANDBY)
- myapp.c: add #include "ha.h" for CTRL_PRIMARY, atomic_store_explicit,
and memory_order_release
- cluster.c: cluster_init() wrapper now calls cluster_fini(c) before
returning on create_ssl_context failure, hook failure, and
cluster_init_phase2 failure — prevents SSL ctx and phase1 resource leak
Four bugs fixed:
1. persist.c: array job WAL loop aborted after index [0] when replication
returned -ENODEV (no standbys). Loop guard now uses the return value of
persist_wal_sync_append() which is 0 on local-disk success regardless of
replication status.
2. join.c: WAL-recovered worker slot (status=UNAVAIL) caused add_worker() to
return -EEXIST on reconnect. New EEXIST path in handle_worker_join() looks
up the existing slot by name, updates its endpoint, and clears UNAVAIL so
the normal hook/reply/on_worker_join flow proceeds.
3. xcectx.c: cbuf_get() in xce_hello() blocked indefinitely when the TCP
connection dropped because no error handler was registered. Added
handle_disconnect() which sets ctx->state=XCE_CTX_ERR and calls
cbuf_tryput(-ECONNRESET) to unblock the waiter, allowing
checking_connection() to detect the failure and rejoin.
4. cluster.c: persist_recover() was called before cluster_build_resources()
populated resmgr, causing restore_worker() → add_hostattrs_resvals() to
fail with EEXIST noise. Moved persist_recover() to after HOOK_AFTER_EVENT
so resmgr is fully populated before WAL replay.
- xce_candidate_t gains name[] field for logical peer identity
- parse_peers stores name prefix before '=' (empty when omitted)
- cluster_init matches own identity by name first, hostname as fallback
enabling multiple controllers on the same dev host via
--peers ctrl-1=10.0.1.1:7000,ctrl-2=10.0.1.2:7001
- myconf_t gains peers_cfg (xce_cluster_config_t) populated from --peers
- controller/main.c: parse --peers host:port,... via argp; ca_cert_path
auto-derived from workdir/certs/xce.crt (no --ca-cert flag needed)
- cluster_init: derive my_priority from position in peers list (index 0 =
primary); fall back to 0 when --peers not given (single-node mode)
- Add HA_DEFAULT_* constants to ha.h; use them in cluster_init()
- Strip stale task-label comments (P1-3a, P1-5, P1-6, P3-6 refs)
- Remove self-documenting 'Step N:' annotations from ha_do_promote/demote
- Rewrite stale forward-reference notes as current WHY comments
- Remove resolved TODO P0-8b from cluster.c
Add terminal-state constants and GC retention predicates for the
checkpoint xzarray_thaw() GC pass:
- types.h: add JOB_STAT_TRANSIENT (0x400), XCE_WORKER_HIDDEN (0x00200000),
QUEUE_STAT_HIDDEN (0x0100)
- persist.c: implement job_is_terminal(), job_should_retain(),
worker_should_retain() — placed here so the unit test binary
(which links only persist.c) can access them without RTTI deps
- persist.h: declare the three GC predicates; include xce/types.h
- worker.c: set dead_since = time(NULL) in mark_worker_unavail()
when dead_since is not already set
- cluster.c: add TODO P0-8b marker on zarray_del endpoint cleanup
- meson.build: register test_gc_retention.c; raise test timeout 60→120s
- testsuite/test_gc_retention.c: 19 tests covering job_is_terminal,
job_should_retain (TRANSIENT TTL, terminal TTL, non-terminal always
retained), and worker_should_retain (HIDDEN/UNAVAIL/healthy/zero
dead_since); all pass (63 total, 0 failures)
- Rename `precision` field to `precision_ms` in delaymgr_t struct (delay.h)
- Replace `sleep(mgr->precision)` with `nanosleep()` for 10ms granularity (delay.c)
- Add `#include <time.h>` to delay.c (already in delay.h)
- Update delaymgr_init() to store precision_ms parameter
- Update all call sites: cluster.c (2→200ms), controller/testsuite/test.c (2→2000ms),
lib/testsuite/test_delay.c (1→1000ms)
- Add TDD test test_delaymgr_precision_ms_field verifying field exists and stores correctly
- delay_task() delay parameter remains in seconds; only sleep granularity changes
Add the full call chain for host control operations from the Go API
server through the C library to the controller:
- schema/controller.capnp: HostControl struct + hostctrlmsg @21
in Request.body union
- include/typemap.h: xce_hostctrl_t* hostctrlmsg in body union
(placed after @20 clrpreasonmsg, matching capnp ordinal)
- include/client.h, xceapi.h, request.h: declarations for
xcecli_hostctrl, xce_hostctrl, xce_hostctrl_req
- lib/client.c: xcecli_hostctrl (validate + delegate to xce_hostctrl)
- lib/xceapi.c: xce_hostctrl (validate ctx state + send + wait reply)
- lib/request.c: xce_hostctrl_req (validate hostname/empty/nil,
accept only HOST_OPEN/HOST_CLOSE, reject HOST_TAG/UNTAG)
- lib/helper.c: Request_body_hostctrlmsg cases in
xce_request_body() and xce_request_msg_name()
- controller/cluster.c: OPCode_hostcontrol dispatch
- controller/include/cluster.h: do_hostcontrol_op declaration
- controller/worker.c: do_hostcontrol_op + fix pre-existing
goto-clean bug in worker_ctrl that leaked write lock and
reference on HOST_OPEN/HOST_CLOSE no-op paths
TDD: 8 xce_hostctrl_req validation tests (null ep, null ctrl,
null/empty hostname, HOST_DO_NONE no-op, HOST_TAG/UNTAG reject,
negative action reject, HOST_OPEN/CLOSE accept via xce_request).
116/116 xcelib tests pass. CGO_ENABLED=0 Go backend tests pass.
