004a40bb3b feat(ha-term-safety): restore controller build + wire vote/AE term wire fields (tasks 1.1, 1.2)
1.1: WalCatchupEntry gains term@4/prevLogIndex@5/prevLogTerm@6 (append-only).
1.2: RequestVote/PreVote gain lastLogTerm@4/lastLogIndex@5; cluster.c vote callers
fixed to the extended library arity (RESTORES xce_controller + controller_unit_test
compile+link, broken by the raft-commit-safety signature extension); ha.c emits the
candidate's last-log tuple on send.

5 minimal stub log/commit callbacks wired into s_real_cbs so raft_init's new
non-NULL requirement is satisfied — tasks 2.x replace them with real bodies; the
logOk freshness gate is inert until the term seam (1.3) + on_get_entry_term (2.2).

Pre-existing test_repl_unit.c wal_catchup -EAGAIN failures + ASAN leaks are an
overlayfs /tmp fsync env artifact (bug-850), not from this task (untouched paths;
append-only schema cannot affect the @3 entries-list decode). Build/baseline
isolation is blocked by a c-capnproto flake-hash drift — see Implementation Notes.

20e59d0b42 checkpoint: bug-851 root cause + raft TLA+ conformance spec family
Investigation & fixes (failover committed-job loss):
- root-cause bug-851 on an owned 3-node cluster: chaotic failover causes
  silent committed-prefix divergence (WAL hdr.term always 0; two leaders
  per term; no (term,lsn) reconcile). Evidence in repro-851/ + INVESTIGATION.
- live-validated fixes 848/849/850 (recovery-on-promotion, advertise real
  applied_lsn, persist-layer contiguity guard); add waldump WAL inspector.

Specs (strict raft.tla conformance — library owns the log):
- TLA-gap-analysis.md: impl vs raft/raft.tla, gaps G1-G6.
- raft-log-replication, raft-commit-safety, raft-sim-conformance: extend
  src/lib/raft to own log/commit/verification via callbacks (specs generated,
  cross-spec review passed).
- ha-term-safety: controller-side adapter + config marker (R1-R7); design done.
- config-upgrade-snapshot: R8 descoped here (deps entity-bearing-snapshots, bug-857).
- roadmap + buglog (851/854/857) + .wolf knowledge updated.

90e7179a89 feat(ha-heartbeat-committed-propagation): standby OP_nop consume branch + term-guard (task 2.2)
Append a committed-consume branch to the OP_nop handler (existing liveness/reply
byte-unchanged): ha_consume_heartbeat_committed applies the non-primary gate
(3.4) + stale-term guard (accept hb->term >= ha->term, 3.2), then delegates to
the monotonic ha_observe_heartbeat_committed (1.2). Absent body / zero / failed
gate are no-ops (4.2). No vote-floor edit — safety is the term-guard. 4 tests.

749e194207 feat(ha-election): per-priority failover election stagger + prevote dispatch-gate
Desync FAILOVER re-elections by node priority (ha_election_stagger_ms /
ha_failover_stagger_fn) mirroring the startup stagger, with seed jitter and
async prevote start; allow prevote in voter roles through the dispatch gate.
Adds HA role and vote-gate tests (stagger desync by priority, prevote on dead
primary, stickiness-lapse grants).

Pre-existing uncommitted work, committed to establish a clean baseline before
ha-commit-durability implementation.

47f733891b fix(ha-prevote): make PreVote denial log-reason match the eligibility gate order exactly
The cluster.c denial-reason elimination ordered catch_up before fresh_heartbeat,
disagreeing with raft_cb_vote_eligible (which checks fresh-heartbeat-on-STANDBY
before catch-up). In the rare STANDBY catch-up + fresh-heartbeat overlap the log
could report catch_up while the gate denied on fresh_heartbeat. Expose the pure
read predicate ha_heartbeat_is_fresh and mirror the gate's exact order so the
logged reason can no longer disagree with the actual denial. Decision unchanged;
log-string fidelity only. prevote/vote-gate/failover-prevote suites green.

6f95e4cdfc feat(ha-prevote): controller voter-side PreVote dispatch (task 3.1)
Add OPCode_preVoteRequest case in cluster.c, mirroring the real-vote case:
freshness floor + reused eligibility/stickiness gate (raft_on_pre_vote_request),
reply over preVoteReply with the voter's UNCHANGED term (no adoption), denial
logging with candidate id + reason. Pure insertion; real-vote case untouched.
6 new vote-gate tests assert deny-while-leader-alive, grant-when-lapsed, and the
no-mutation/term-unchanged contract.

646aa69aa8 fix(controller): set c->running in cluster_run so HA primary streams joblist/workerlist
cluster_start (which set c->running) is orphaned on the HA myapp_run path, so
the running flag was never set on HA nodes — check_controller() treated the
primary as shutting down and zeroed joblist/workerlist reply chunks. Own the
flag lifecycle in cluster_run, symmetric with the c->running=0 on shutdown.

ca1d9ae42d fix(ha-commit-engine): raise commit-barrier default 50->500ms + add --sync-timeout-ms
Live symptom: jobsub intermittently failed with 'Connection timed out' even
though the cluster had quorum. Root cause: the synchronous commit barrier waits
only DEFAULT_SYNC_TIMEOUT_MS=50ms for durable majority replication, and that was
not configurable. 50ms is too tight for durable sync majority replication —
especially since standbys now fdatasync each replicated entry before ACK — so a
multi-entry jobsub's later WAL entry intermittently misses the window:
  commit: WAIT deadline expired without commit (lsn=3 committed_lsn=2 timeout_ms=50)
-> persist hook returns -ETIMEDOUT -> handle_jobsubmit rejects -> client ETIMEDOUT.

Fix:
- Raise DEFAULT_SYNC_TIMEOUT_MS 50 -> 500 (config.h) — realistic for durable sync
  majority replication, still bounded for failure detection.
- Add a --sync-timeout-ms controller flag threaded arguments -> myconf ->
  persist pcfg (override applied before persist_init); 0 = use default, positive
  overrides — so operators can tune per environment.

TDD: literal-pinned persist_config_defaults().sync_timeout_ms == 500. All
timeout-sensitive tests already pass an explicit timeout_ms (none rely on the
default), so none are slowed; full controller suite green under ASAN. No
commit-engine/barrier/replication/wire change beyond the default value + plumbing.
bug-561.

c97c7632e9 fix(ha-config-bootstrap,ha-repl-hardening): config-less node must not win election
Root cause (found via ha-convergence-recovery task 8 live 3-node E2E): a
controller with no local config (config_version_tag==0) could become PRIMARY
and push an empty config, breaking replication.

Two upstream election-safety gaps, both outside ha-convergence-recovery:

1. RDHUP re-election bypassed the no-config 'voter only' guard. The startup
   path (ha_start_election_async) refuses to start an election when
   my_config_tag==0 && n_peers>1, but the RDHUP failover path
   (ha_on_primary_ctrl_fd_rdhup) called raft_on_leader_lost unconditionally.
   Fix: mirror the guard before elect_ctx alloc / hook / raft_on_leader_lost;
   a config-less node stays CTRL_STANDBY (voter only) and grants the
   configured peer instead of starting (and winning) its own election.

2. Voter freshness gate compared the candidate only against the voter's LOCAL
   config, ignoring the cluster's known committed state. Fix: ha_vote_self_freshness
   floors the comparison at max(local, learned-committed config_tag / committed_lsn),
   so a voter denies any candidate whose config/cluster state is outdated vs
   what the cluster has committed. Strictly additive (never denies the freshest
   node — Leader Completeness preserves liveness).

TDD: test_rdhup_noconfig_node_does_not_elect + configured-node contrast;
test_ha_vote_gate learned-floor deny + liveness + backward-compat. Full
controller suite green under ASAN. commit.c and ha-convergence-recovery
files untouched.

5a2fae1d37 feat(ha-commit-barrier-rollout): config barrier with production ACK ingestion (task 5.2 + r1)
configAck branch: per-push majority (acked_config_lsn >= push_tag,
1+count > n_peers/2 over r->ce->n_peers, n_peers<=1 immediate,
ce==NULL -EINVAL); legacy >0 counting and n_active==0 shortcut dead.
push_config_to_standbys returns the barrier result; upgrade failure ->
send_upgrade_error (rc forwarded), no success ACK, no restart,
committed_config_tag success-only.

Remediation r1 (two CRITICAL review findings):
- F1: wire production config-ACK ingestion — replconfigpushreplymsg
  decode branch in repl_ack_decode_and_dispatch -> repl_on_config_ack
  on the promoted-vote ep; + defensive cluster.c OPCode_reply case.
  Closes the unlanded half of ha-config-bootstrap 8.1; without this the
  barrier would brick every multi-member config upgrade. No schema change.
- F2: keep the barrier off the iomgr thread — export
  push_config_transport_only (non-blocking) for the 5 ha.c + join.c
  streaming sites; barrier path now vtask-only (do_upgrade_config).

Wire-path test drives real capnp ACK bytes through the production decode
branch. 30/30 rollout, 6/6 repl_majority, 46/46 config_repl; census 0
FAIL; pre-existing fixture leak only (less than baseline).

f0d6074d4e feat(ha-commit-engine): engine instantiation + sync-append path switch (task 5.3)
cluster_t embeds commit_engine_t; init in cluster_init_phase2 after the
vtaskmgr guard (idempotence-guarded — phase2 can run twice), wiring
repl_set_commit_engine + ha.repl back-pointer before any standby can
register; fini after iomgr/vtask shutdown. persist_wal_sync_append
passes written_lsn; engine-wired path drops -ENODEV and the
committed_lsn store (engine owns advancement); LSN-0 first-entry
routes to legacy per the accepted interim. p2 -ENODEV pin updated to
the Req 6.3 contract. 34/34 + 6/6 green through honest delegation;
census exactly at the 3 validated baselines; production binary links.

566c91cd8b feat(ha-wal-replication): standby WAL ACK reply (tasks 3.1-3.3)
Standby sends WalAckReply via xce_reply after each successfully
applied WAL entry. ha_apply_wal_catchup_entry signature extended
with endpoint_t* and cluster_t* parameters. walackreplymsg union
arm added to RequestReply capnp schema and xce_reply_t. Error
entries skip ACK. Dispatch gate test confirms OPCode_walCatchupEntry
allowed in CTRL_STANDBY/ELECTING/INIT.

3d076ccda6 fix(ha): fix config replication to standbys; add replConfigPush handler
- config_repl.c: add handle_repl_config_push — standby handler for
  OPCode_replConfigPush. Verifies SHA-256, saves blob to disk via
  conf_save_config, reloads via load_primary_config, ACKs primary.
- config_repl.h: declare handle_repl_config_push.
- cluster.c: dispatch OPCode_replConfigPush to handle_repl_config_push;
  populate c->myhost_info.name from myconf->name (ctrl-1/ctrl-2/ctrl-3)
  instead of the static "controller" placeholder.
- ha.c: fix raft_cb_become_leader push_config_to_standbys call to pass
  real config bytes and tag read from disk (was NULL/0 — standbys got
  empty push and never saved config).
- typemap.h: add raw_sha256/raw_bytes/raw_bytes_len fields to
  repl_config_push_req_t (mirrors upgrade_config_req_t pattern).
- request.c: pre-extract List(UInt8) sha256/bytes from OPCode_replConfigPush
  before capn_free() in xce_decode(); free them in xce_free_request().
- helper.c: add all HA/replication opcode names to xce_request_op_name
  so "unknown opcode 30" becomes "replConfigPush" in logs.
- cluster_def.h: add embedded myhost_info field to cluster_t struct.
- ha.h: declare ha_start_primary_heartbeat; remove dead
  ha_find_and_connect_to_primary declaration.

7b39650229 refactor(ha): passive standby model — primary connects outbound to all peers
Remove fetch_config_from_primary, ha_find_and_connect_to_primary, and the
tier-1/2/3 discovery path. Standbys never initiate outbound connections to
the primary; the primary owns all inter-controller channels.

Key changes:
- ha.c: add primary heartbeat loop (ha_start_primary_heartbeat) that sends
  OPCode_nop to connected standbys every heartbeat_interval_ms; loop
  self-cancels on demotion via role check before re-arm.
- ha.c: add outbound reconnect in primary_heartbeat_fn — for peers absent
  from standby_endpoints, open fresh outbound TLS connection (on_standby_connected
  sends ctrlhello; standby_ep_ctx_t mirrors vote_ep_ctx_t layout).
- ha.c: remove ha_find_and_connect_to_primary + helpers (ha_raw_tcp_connect,
  ha_tcp_connect_hook); remove election_timeout_fn (superseded by
  raft_election_timeout_fn); remove fetch_config_from_primary call from
  ha_elect_evaluate_and_signal STANDBY branch.
- cluster.c: OPCode_requestVote denial no longer reuses inbound connection;
  late joiners are bootstrapped via primary heartbeat outbound connect.
- config_repl.c: remove connect_ssl_raw, do_one_config_fetch,
  fetch_config_from_primary (~250 LOC).
- myapp.c: remove my_tag > 0 fetch branch; all standbys wait passively.
- ha.h: remove ha_find_and_connect_to_primary declaration + macros +
  ha_tcp_connect_hook seam; add ha_start_primary_heartbeat declaration.
- meson.build: remove test_ha_connect.c (tests deleted function).
- controller_test.c: remove test_ha_connect registration.
- CLAUDE.md, src/controller/CLAUDE.md: document passive standby model,
  inbound-vs-outbound connection ownership, async I/O constraint,
  heartbeat model.
- request.h: add xce_request declaration (removes scattered local externs).

b2faf41703 refactor(controller): move manager init to cluster_init_phase1
Extract cluster_init_managers() which initializes configmgr, jobmgr,
resmgr, workermgr, qmgr, sharedinst, xstrings, endpoints, and job_obj.
Call it from cluster_init_phase1 (after init_controller_tunables) so
all managers exist before election.

This fixes the heap-buffer-overflow in handle_connection: incoming
OP_requestVote SSL connections arrive during the pre-election phase
and call zarray_store(&c->endpoints) — which requires endpoints to
be initialized first.

cluster_init_phase2 is simplified: it no longer re-initializes these
managers and only sets up iomgr/SSL, opens the listener, and loads
cluster-config-dependent data.
2026-05-30 01:20:22 +00:00
c42e1e0cb4 refactor(controller): extract init_controller_tunables() for perf params
Add ctrl_tunables struct to cluster_t with per-table fields:
  jobmgr_nhash/delta, workermgr_nhash/delta, qmgr_nhash/delta,
  resmgr_nhash/delta/inst, xstrings_nhash

init_controller_tunables() sets defaults (jobs=512, others=128)
and is called from cluster_init_phase1 so values are available
before cluster_init_phase2. Phase2 reads from c->tunables instead
of cluster_config or local #defines.

Each table gets its own values since they hold different item counts:
jobs can scale to hundreds, workers/queues/resources are typically
single-digit to tens.
2026-05-30 01:14:40 +00:00
5f1af48d57 refactor(controller): use hardcoded defaults for perf-tuning params
Replace cluster_config-dependent hash sizes with compile-time constants
(CTRL_PERF_NHASH=512, CTRL_PERF_DELTA=64, CTRL_PERF_INST=64) for:
  jobmgr, workermgr, qmgr, resmgr, xstrings

These are controller performance tuning parameters (capnp fields @13–@17)
that have no config generation tool yet. Using hardcoded defaults unblocks
cluster startup without requiring these fields in the config blob.

TODO: wire back to cluster_config once config generation tool is ready.

47c09d653c fix(ha-bootstrap): three startup fixes for election reliability
1. iomgr_monitor double-register: cluster_start skips iomgr_monitor
   if c->ep was already registered by cluster_register_listener
   (ep->flags non-zero after successful registration). Previously
   returned EEXIST → -1 → "Operation not permitted" crash.

2. ASAN stack-use-after-return: cluster_fini now calls iomgr_stop()
   before iomgr_fini() to join the worker thread before the cluster_t
   stack frame is reclaimed by the caller.

3. Election timing: add ha_wait_for_heartbeat_or_timeout() before
   election in myapp_run. If an existing primary sends a heartbeat,
   node becomes STANDBY immediately without competing in election.
   If timeout expires (no primary running), proceed to election.
   This prevents ctrl-a from immediately losing when ctrl-b/c are
   not yet started — it now waits election_timeout_ms (2s) first.
2026-05-30 00:28:10 +00:00
fe37f4d692 fix(ha-bootstrap): register listener with iomgr epoll before election
vote_request_thread connects to peers via SSL. iomgr was started before
election but c->ep was only registered with epoll inside cluster_start(),
which runs after election. The TCP connect succeeded (kernel accepts it)
but SSL_accept was never called server-side, so SSL_connect failed
immediately — both vote threads went to deny in <1ms and ctrl-a could
never win a quorum.

Fix: add cluster_register_listener() that wires c->ep into iomgr's
epoll watch. Call it from myapp_run() right after iomgr_start/vtaskmgr_start,
before election. cluster_start() still calls iomgr_monitor again
(idempotent via EPOLL_CTL_MOD).
2026-05-30 00:10:23 +00:00
6753b364c8 fix(ha-bootstrap): wire OP_requestVote RPC through standard Request envelope
The vote_request_thread was sending raw capnp(RequestVoteRequest) bytes
but the server-side iomgr decodes every incoming packet as a Request
struct. This caused the term field (uint64) to be misread as the opcode
field (uint16), so vote RPCs were silently misrouted (term=1 → OPCode_reply,
term=2 → OPCode_hello) and no node ever got a vote from its peers.

Fix:
- controller.capnp: add requestvotemsg @27 to Request.body and
  requestvotereplymsg @14 to RequestReply.data
- typemap.h: move request_vote_req_t/reply_t before xce_request_t;
  add requestvotemsg/requestvotereplymsg to body/data unions
- ha.c: rewrite vote_request_thread send/recv to use xce_encode()
  wrapper and decode outer Request→inner RequestReply on receive
- cluster.c: add case OPCode_requestVote handler calling
  handle_request_vote() and replying via xce_reply()

All 188 unit tests pass.

72776f18ff feat(ha-config-bootstrap): implement dispatch gate (task 3.3)
- errnox.h: add E_XCE_NOT_READY and E_XCE_STANDBY error codes with
  extern int XCE_ERR_NOT_READY / XCE_ERR_STANDBY runtime variables
- ha.h: declare ha_dispatch_gate(ha_state_t *, int opcode)
- ha.c: define XCE_ERR_* variables; initialize heartbeat_seen semaphore
  and primary_ctrl_fd = -1 in ha_init(); sem_destroy in ha_fini();
  implement ha_dispatch_gate() with allowlist for CTRL_INIT/CTRL_ELECTING
  (only OP_requestVote and OP_probeConfigTag pass) and CTRL_STANDBY
  (replication, election, and housekeeping ops pass; primary-only ops
  return -XCE_ERR_STANDBY)
- cluster.c: wire ha_dispatch_gate() in myreq_handler() before opcode
  switch; gate failure sends error reply and returns early

All 393 unit tests pass. Satisfies requirements 1.3 and 1.4.

6272fc8eb2 feat(ha-config-bootstrap): extract cluster_open_listener, reorder startup before election (task 3.2) 2026-05-28 05:03:50 +00:00
488fd1bf49 feat(ha-config-bootstrap): add peer count and cert pre-flight validation (task 2.3)
- Implement validate_peer_count() in startup_validation.c: -EINVAL for even N>1
- Implement validate_cert_files() with err_buf output: access() check, writes
  missing path into err_buf, returns -ENOENT
- Wire validate_peer_count() in main.c after peer list parse; fatal exit on fail
- Wire validate_cert_files() in main.c before SSL init; fatal exit on fail
- Fix ASAN leak: SSL_CTX_free in ha_fini() with NULL guard
- Fix double-free: null c->ha.ssl_ctx in cluster_fini() before ha_fini(),
  so iomgr_fini() retains sole SSL_CTX ownership (design per ha.h comment)
- All 96 tests pass; all 12 ha_startup tests GREEN

3ab2e6e4bf feat(ha-config-bootstrap): implement --vcpus CLI, wire validation, remove vcpus from config (task 2.2)
- Add --vcpus N argp option in main.c; store in myconf.vcpus
- Replace inline argp guard with validate_vcpus() call (returns -EINVAL for <=0)
- Add validate_startup_config() in startup_validation.c: returns 0; writes
  deprecation warning into caller-supplied warn_buf when vcpus key present
- Wire validate_startup_config() into myapp_run() after conffile resolved;
  emit WARN() if warn_buf non-empty (Req 4.4)
- Remove vcpus field from cluster_config_t (clusterconfig.h)
- Preserve capnp ordinal: vcpus @7 -> vcpusDeprecated @7: Void in controller.capnp
- vtaskmgr_init uses only myconf->vcpus with hardcoded default 8
- Add stub C types in typemap.h for capnp schema extensions from task 1.1
- 96 tests pass

5053c8d42f feat(config-repl): wire handle_upgrade_config() via raw packet interception
Pre-decode opcode peek in myreq_handler() captures raw packet bytes for
OP_upgradeConfig before xce_decode() frees the capnp segment. Passes
raw bytes to xce_upgrade_config_req_extract_raw() to extract sha256 and
config blob, then delegates to do_upgrade_config_with_bytes().

Removes Task 11 dependency. Phase 2 still gated by CONF_ENABLE_UPGRADE_CONFIG.

93b8616f11 fix: capture am_i_primary() result once; set ha->role before phase2; cluster_init wrapper cleanup on failure
- myapp.c: capture am_i_primary() into is_primary (avoids redundant
  second probe call); after load_primary_config() succeeds, record
  CTRL_PRIMARY role via atomic_store_explicit so cluster_init_phase2()
  sees the correct role (ha_init() defaults to CTRL_STANDBY)
- myapp.c: add #include "ha.h" for CTRL_PRIMARY, atomic_store_explicit,
  and memory_order_release
- cluster.c: cluster_init() wrapper now calls cluster_fini(c) before
  returning on create_ssl_context failure, hook failure, and
  cluster_init_phase2 failure — prevents SSL ctx and phase1 resource leak

6b06aa02d9 feat: split cluster_init() into phase1/phase2; update myapp_run() for two-phase startup with am_i_primary gating
- cluster_init_phase1(): hooks, HA init (priority from --peers), standby_endpoints zarray, cbuf
- cluster_init_phase2(): SSL ctx from ha.ssl_ctx, cluster_config guard, kvmgr sizing, iomgr, endpoint, persist, role promotion, create_lost_and_found, persist_recover
- cluster_init(): legacy wrapper calling both phases with inline SSL init for backward compat
- myapp_run(): phase1 → SSL init → am_i_primary → load_primary_config/fetch_config_from_primary → phase2 → start → run
- myreq_handler(): add OPCode_replConfig and OPCode_upgradeConfig dispatch
- handle_endpoint_error(): prune standby_endpoints on HostRole_controller disconnect
- cluster_run(): log restart_requested on exit
- config_repl.c: add create_lost_and_found, handle_config_request, handle_upgrade_config stubs
- config_repl.h: add declarations for new stubs; include netio.h + request.h
- cluster.h: declare cluster_init_phase1 and cluster_init_phase2
- myconf.c: fix FATAL → ERROR (FATAL macro undefined); add fetch_config_from_primary stub

6429ef0bff fix: correct controller restart recovery — jobs, workers, and resource ordering
Four bugs fixed:

1. persist.c: array job WAL loop aborted after index [0] when replication
   returned -ENODEV (no standbys). Loop guard now uses the return value of
   persist_wal_sync_append() which is 0 on local-disk success regardless of
   replication status.

2. join.c: WAL-recovered worker slot (status=UNAVAIL) caused add_worker() to
   return -EEXIST on reconnect. New EEXIST path in handle_worker_join() looks
   up the existing slot by name, updates its endpoint, and clears UNAVAIL so
   the normal hook/reply/on_worker_join flow proceeds.

3. xcectx.c: cbuf_get() in xce_hello() blocked indefinitely when the TCP
   connection dropped because no error handler was registered. Added
   handle_disconnect() which sets ctx->state=XCE_CTX_ERR and calls
   cbuf_tryput(-ECONNRESET) to unblock the waiter, allowing
   checking_connection() to detect the failure and rejoin.

4. cluster.c: persist_recover() was called before cluster_build_resources()
   populated resmgr, causing restore_worker() → add_hostattrs_resvals() to
   fail with EEXIST noise. Moved persist_recover() to after HOOK_AFTER_EVENT
   so resmgr is fully populated before WAL replay.
