- Implement validate_peer_count() in startup_validation.c: -EINVAL for even N>1
- Implement validate_cert_files() with err_buf output: access() check, writes
missing path into err_buf, returns -ENOENT
- Wire validate_peer_count() in main.c after peer list parse; fatal exit on fail
- Wire validate_cert_files() in main.c before SSL init; fatal exit on fail
- Fix ASAN leak: SSL_CTX_free in ha_fini() with NULL guard
- Fix double-free: null c->ha.ssl_ctx in cluster_fini() before ha_fini(),
so iomgr_fini() retains sole SSL_CTX ownership (design per ha.h comment)
- All 96 tests pass; all 12 ha_startup tests GREEN
- Add --vcpus N argp option in main.c; store in myconf.vcpus
- Replace inline argp guard with validate_vcpus() call (returns -EINVAL for <=0)
- Add validate_startup_config() in startup_validation.c: returns 0; writes
deprecation warning into caller-supplied warn_buf when vcpus key present
- Wire validate_startup_config() into myapp_run() after conffile resolved;
emit WARN() if warn_buf non-empty (Req 4.4)
- Remove vcpus field from cluster_config_t (clusterconfig.h)
- Preserve capnp ordinal: vcpus @7 -> vcpusDeprecated @7: Void in controller.capnp
- vtaskmgr_init uses only myconf->vcpus with hardcoded default 8
- Add stub C types in typemap.h for capnp schema extensions from task 1.1
- 96 tests pass
RED-phase tests for 4 startup validation functions — all fail at link time
because the functions under test do not exist yet:
- validate_peer_count: even N>1 returns -EINVAL, odd N returns 0
- validate_cert_files: missing cert/key returns -ENOENT with full path
in err_buf output param (asserted via strstr)
- validate_vcpus: vcpus<=0 returns -EINVAL, positive returns 0
- validate_startup_config: vcpus key in config returns 0 (not fatal)
and writes deprecation text into warn_buf (asserted via strstr)
Pre-decode opcode peek in myreq_handler() captures raw packet bytes for
OP_upgradeConfig before xce_decode() frees the capnp segment. Passes
raw bytes to xce_upgrade_config_req_extract_raw() to extract sha256 and
config blob, then delegates to do_upgrade_config_with_bytes().
Removes Task 11 dependency. Phase 2 still gated by CONF_ENABLE_UPGRADE_CONFIG.
Replaces -ENOSYS stub with:
- connect_ssl_raw() helper (non-blocking connect + poll + SSL handshake,
checks ha_is_primary() between iterations for early promotion exit)
- xce_replconfig_req_ssl() to send OP_replConfig request
- xce_replconfig_reply_ssl_decode() to receive and decode reply
- SHA-256 integrity verify (retry on mismatch with -EBADMSG)
- conf_save_config() atomic disk write to workdir/name/conf/
- load_primary_config() to reload cluster_config from newly saved file
Standby can now fetch ClusterConfig from primary on startup.
xce_replconfig_reply_raw() - primary sends reply with real bytes via endpoint
xce_replconfig_req_ssl() - standby sends request over raw SSL socket
xce_replconfig_reply_ssl_decode() - standby decodes reply from raw SSL
xce_upgrade_config_req_extract() - documents architectural limitation; returns -ENOTSUP
xce_upgrade_config_req_extract_raw() - extract bytes from raw packet for OP_upgradeConfig
Same bypass pattern as existing xce_replconfigpush_req_raw(): build the
capnp message directly via capn_new_list8 + capn_setv8, sidestepping the
encode_Data_ptr path that routes raw bytes through xce_data_t (a
discriminated cluster-data union that cannot carry raw byte arrays).
Unblocks handle_config_request() and do_one_config_fetch() wiring.
Task A research finding: xce_upgrade_config_req_extract(xce_request_t*)
is unimplementable because xce_decode() calls capn_free() before any
handler runs, and decode_Data_ptr converts the wire-format List(UInt8)
into a zero-filled xce_data_t. Task D must capture the raw io_packet_t
bytes before xce_decode tears them down, then call the _raw variant.
Replaces blocking pthread_join() per thread with a CLOCK_MONOTONIC
deadline + 5ms poll loop. CONF_PUSH_TIMEOUT_MS (500ms) now enforced.
Matches design §6.3 aggregate timeout guarantee.
- Add done field to push_ctx_t; push_thread sets it on exit
- Add static wait_all_with_timeout() before push_config_to_standbys()
- Wire push_config_to_standbys() to use wait_all_with_timeout()
- Add #include <stdatomic.h> to config_repl.c
- Guard push_ctx_t local typedef with #ifndef XCE_TESTING
- Expose push_ctx_t and wait_all_with_timeout_for_test() in header
under XCE_TESTING for unit test access
- Add test_wait_all_with_timeout_slow_threads (timeout fires, acked=0)
- Add test_wait_all_with_timeout_fast_threads (all complete, acked=3)
- Update design doc §6.3 with actual implementation signature and
5ms poll interval note
load_primary_config() reads from workdir/name/conf — conf_save_config()
was writing to workdir/conf. Latent bug: would have corrupted upgrade
restart cycle once Task 11 wired the upgrade path.
Update all conf_read_current_filename, conf_get_saved_tag, and
conf_check_stale calls in the test suite to use the corrected
effective_dir (workdir/name) path structure. Add new test
test_conf_save_config_path_consistency that explicitly verifies the
written path matches what load_primary_config() reads.
Crash: encode_NameValue_list called with count=21, s=NULL on worker
rejoin, causing SIGSEGV in persist_worker_hook_fun.
Root cause: free_name_val_list(xce_name_val_t***, int) accepted count by
value. It zeroed *vals (resvals_to_sched = NULL) but could not zero
nresvals_to_sched. Any caller that freed the scheduler resource snapshot
(opget.c workerlist, reply.c clusterconf, dataex.c, sched.c dispatch)
left nresvals_to_sched stale. When the worker later rejoined and the
WAL HOOK fired, the WAL encoder read count=21 with a NULL pointer.
Fix: change signature to free_name_val_list(xce_name_val_t***, int*)
so both fields are zeroed atomically. Update all 7 call sites.
Root cause: test_heartbeat_stale_no_crash_without_primary had
heartbeat_timeout_ms=100 < heartbeat_interval_ms=3000, causing ha_init
to return -EINVAL before memset. The test ignored the return value and
called ha_fini on garbage stack memory. The watchdog_thread field
happened to hold the value 3 (from a prior stack frame), so
ha_stop_watchdog called pthread_join(3, NULL) — crash at 0x2d3
(__pthread_clockjoin_ex accessing thread-struct field at offset 0x2d0).
Fix 1 (test): valid config (interval=2000, timeout=3000). Staleness is
injected via last_heartbeat -= 10s, so timeout value was irrelevant.
Added TEST_ASSERT_EQUAL_INT check on ha_init return.
Fix 2 (ha_init): move memset before validation so ha_fini is safe to
call even after a failed init — prevents the same bug class in callers
that check ha_init's return late.
Verified: test_ha_role 11/11 PASS in both non-ASAN and ASAN builds.
Replace monolithic add_worker with three focused functions:
- apply_join_state (static under production, exported under XCE_TESTING):
shared status/resource update called by both create and rejoin paths;
clears XCE_WORKER_UNAVAIL, applies hconfig overrides, updates resources
- init_worker: first-time join path via makeWorker + apply_join_state
- rejoin_worker: reconnect path with explicit admin-bit preservation
(XCE_WORKER_ADMIN_MASK = LOCKEDU|CLOSED|HIDDEN|CLOSED_BY_ADMIN)
Also makes find_matched_hostconfig non-static so join.c can call it
via the extern declaration already in worker.h.
Removes add_worker (no longer declared in worker.h, no callers).
All 7 tests in test_worker_join pass:
apply_join_state (clears UNAVAIL, hosttype override, resource values),
init_worker (creates entry, returns correct idx),
rejoin_worker (updates attrs/ep, preserves admin bits).
- create_lost_and_found(): provide hostattrs_t so makeWorker succeeds
- collect_queues/collect_workers (dataex.c): skip lost_and_found sentinel
so it is never pushed to apiserver or scheduler
- mark_worker_unavail(): reset hosttype/hostmodel to "unknown" and zero
all numeric attrs, then update resvals and slots — prevents stale
capacity from being visible while the host is down
- restore_worker(): apply the same attr reset on WAL recovery so
restored-but-unavailable workers advertise no capacity until reconnect;
also remove dead calloc() that was immediately overwritten by makeWorker
- Extract reset_hostattrs_unknown() helper to eliminate copy-paste
- Define XCE_LOST_AND_FOUND_NAME constant in config_repl.h; replace all
six raw "lost_and_found" string literals across config_repl.c and dataex.c
- handle_config_request(): primary-side handler sends up-to-date flag or
version_tag; SHA-256 integrity check guards against in-place file changes;
sha256/bytes fields left NULL pending Task 11 typemap shims
- fetch_config_from_primary(): standby fetch with exponential backoff retry
(20 attempts, 500ms..5s); falls back to saved config via load_primary_config();
do_one_config_fetch() stubbed (-ENOSYS) until Task 11 wires capnp over SSL
- handle_controller_join(): registers standby endpoint in ha.standby_endpoints
via zarray_store() for OP_upgradeConfig fan-out; sends success reply
- Moved load_primary_config() from myconf.c to config_repl.c so the unit test
binary (which links config_repl.c but not myconf.c) can resolve it
- myapp.c: capture am_i_primary() into is_primary (avoids redundant
second probe call); after load_primary_config() succeeds, record
CTRL_PRIMARY role via atomic_store_explicit so cluster_init_phase2()
sees the correct role (ha_init() defaults to CTRL_STANDBY)
- myapp.c: add #include "ha.h" for CTRL_PRIMARY, atomic_store_explicit,
and memory_order_release
- cluster.c: cluster_init() wrapper now calls cluster_fini(c) before
returning on create_ssl_context failure, hook failure, and
cluster_init_phase2 failure — prevents SSL ctx and phase1 resource leak
- load_primary_config(): resolves conf/current, reads raw bytes, computes
SHA-256 tag, decodes Cap'n Proto via load_cluster_config_from_file(),
checks reserved names, sets config_generation, checks staleness
- myconf_fini(): frees conffile and cluster_config (calls free_ClusterConfig)
- Remove static cf global from myconf.c; get_default_conf() now uses a
local struct cluster_configuration* via load_cluster_config()
- Add load_primary_config_for_test() under XCE_TESTING in config_repl.c
to test path resolution without triggering FATAL
- Add xce/cluster_def.h include to config_repl.c and test_config_repl.c
so cluster_t is complete when XCE_TESTING is active
- TDD: test_load_primary_config_missing_returns_error passes (18/18)
When a worker re-joins and already exists in workermgr, makeWorker_()
now overrides the existing slot instead of returning EEXIST. Admin-set
flags (LOCKEDU, CLOSED, HIDDEN, CLOSED_BY_ADMIN) survive the override.
Add XCE_WORKER_CLOSED_BY_ADMIN flag to distinguish admin-closed hosts
from workload-closed ones. worker_ctrl sets/clears it alongside CLOSED.
Refactor worker_init/worker_destroy into copy_worker/kill_worker helpers
shared by both fresh creation and override paths.

Four bugs fixed:
1. persist.c: array job WAL loop aborted after index [0] when replication
returned -ENODEV (no standbys). Loop guard now uses the return value of
persist_wal_sync_append() which is 0 on local-disk success regardless of
replication status.
2. join.c: WAL-recovered worker slot (status=UNAVAIL) caused add_worker() to
return -EEXIST on reconnect. New EEXIST path in handle_worker_join() looks
up the existing slot by name, updates its endpoint, and clears UNAVAIL so
the normal hook/reply/on_worker_join flow proceeds.
3. xcectx.c: cbuf_get() in xce_hello() blocked indefinitely when the TCP
connection dropped because no error handler was registered. Added
handle_disconnect() which sets ctx->state=XCE_CTX_ERR and calls
cbuf_tryput(-ECONNRESET) to unblock the waiter, allowing
checking_connection() to detect the failure and rejoin.
4. cluster.c: persist_recover() was called before cluster_build_resources()
populated resmgr, causing restore_worker() → add_hostattrs_resvals() to
fail with EEXIST noise. Moved persist_recover() to after HOOK_AFTER_EVENT
so resmgr is fully populated before WAL replay.
All three persist hook functions (job/worker/queue) were ignoring the
situation argument, so they fired on both BEFORE and AFTER events.
BEFORE_EVENT hooks pass different va_list layouts than AFTER_EVENT:
- WORKER_JOIN BEFORE: (cluster_t*, char* name, int 0) vs AFTER: (cluster_t*, worker_t*)
- JOB_NEW BEFORE: (cluster_t*, xce_job_submit_t*) vs AFTER: (cluster_t*, xlist_t*)
Reading the wrong type from va_list caused a dereference crash.
Fix: return 0 immediately on HOOK_BEFORE_EVENT in all three hooks.
WAL payloads:
- Job state transitions (START/FINISH/FAIL/STOP/RESUME/UPDATE etc):
wal_jobstate_t {uint64_t jobid, uint32_t state} — restores exact state flags
- Queue state (QUEUE_CTRL): wal_queuehdr_t {uint32_t status} + name string —
re-applies admin open/close/active/inactive after config queues are built
- Worker CTRL: existing [uint32_t detail][capnp xce_worker_t] unchanged
New recovery functions:
- restore_job_state(c, jobid, state): looks up job, overwrites state flags
- restore_queue_state(c, name, status): looks up queue, overwrites status
apply_wal_entry: dispatches all WAL types including job state and queue
test_repl_apply.c: weak stubs for restore_job_state/restore_queue_state
so unit test binary links without job.c/queue.c
WAL hooks now write real Cap'n Proto payloads instead of stub uint32_t:
- WAL_JOB_SUBMIT: full xce_job_t serialized via encode_Job/write_Job
- WAL_WORKER_CTRL: [uint32_t detail][xce_worker_t capnp] via encode_Worker
- Other job events (START/FINISH/FAIL/STOP etc): uint64_t jobid only
restore_job(): deserializes Cap'n Proto xce_job_t, guards against duplicate
replay with key_find check, then calls create_job()
worker_from_capnp(): skips 4-byte detail prefix, deserializes xce_worker_t,
guards against duplicate replay, then calls restore_worker()
join.c: pass worker_t* (looked up by idx via vget) to WORKER_JOIN hook
so persist hook can serialize worker data without touching workermgr RTTI
Replace all fprintf(stderr,...) calls with INFO/WARN/ERROR/TRACE so
persist.c output appears in the controller's structured log rather than
mixing plain text on stderr with tlog-formatted output.
Three identical static copies (controller, worker, scheduler) replaced
with a single xce_parse_peers() in src/lib/cluster.c.
The libxce version is the canonical implementation: stores the logical
name from 'name=host:port' syntax so daemons on the same dev host can
identify themselves by name rather than IP address.
- xce_candidate_t gains name[] field for logical peer identity
- parse_peers stores name prefix before '=' (empty when omitted)
- cluster_init matches own identity by name first, hostname as fallback
enabling multiple controllers on the same dev host via
--peers ctrl-1=10.0.1.1:7000,ctrl-2=10.0.1.2:7001
- myconf_t gains peers_cfg (xce_cluster_config_t) populated from --peers
- controller/main.c: parse --peers host:port,... via argp; ca_cert_path
auto-derived from workdir/certs/xce.crt (no --ca-cert flag needed)
- cluster_init: derive my_priority from position in peers list (index 0 =
primary); fall back to 0 when --peers not given (single-node mode)
- Add HA_DEFAULT_* constants to ha.h; use them in cluster_init()
- Strip stale task-label comments (P1-3a, P1-5, P1-6, P3-6 refs)
- Remove self-documenting 'Step N:' annotations from ha_do_promote/demote
- Rewrite stale forward-reference notes as current WHY comments
- Remove resolved TODO P0-8b from cluster.c
Add test-only function ha_trigger_manual_failover_for_test() to exercise manual
failover state machine (demote → promote cycle) without requiring live cluster_t.
Test coverage:
- test_manual_failover_transitions_role_and_increments_term: Validates role
transitions (PRIMARY → STANDBY → PRIMARY) and term monotonicity
- test_manual_failover_resets_hooks_registered: Confirms demotion resets the
hooks_registered idempotency guard
- test_manual_failover_monotonic_term_across_multiple_cycles: Validates term
remains monotonically increasing across 5 consecutive failover cycles
Implementation:
- Exposed only under #ifdef XCE_TESTING in ha.h
- Function body (6 lines): calls ha_do_demote() then ha_do_promote(); returns
the new term value via atomic_load_explicit()
- Enables design validation (P3-6) without test-cluster infrastructure
All tests pass. Build clean.
