The buglog was one 27K-line JSON file whose fields covered only symptom,
root cause and fix, as free text: 2% of entries named the code version a
bug was found on, 12% the build profile, 36% a way to reproduce, and 58% of
the file was OpenWolf hook auto-detections ("Missing guard clause",
"Function not marked async" on .md files).
- .claude/skills/buglog/bug-record.md: the record standard. Eight
sections (Summary as the title, Description, Environment, Reproduction;
Root cause, Fix, Verification, References once fixed), each with the
content it must contain -- e.g. Environment needs the OS, the libc the
failing binary loads (from its ELF interpreter: glibc 2.42 in the nix
shell vs 2.40 on the host), toolchain, build profile and commit.
- .wolf/bugs/<id>.md: 500 records migrated from buglog.json; every field
verified to round-trip. They carry legacy: true and an explicit "not
recorded" where the old log had no such field; component derived from
file paths, severity from keywords (else unknown), fix_commits from
hashes in status_note/fix that git resolves (91 of 463 fixed).
- .wolf/buglog-archive.json: the 710 hook auto-detections, verbatim.
- .wolf/buglog.json is now an index generated from the records, keeping
the fields OpenWolf's hooks and `openwolf bug search` read.
- scripts/buglog.py rewritten: new (template + Environment collected from
the machine and --binary), check, status (refuses a status the record
doesn't support; fixed needs Root cause, Fix, Verification and
--commit hashes git resolves), note, recur, set, show, list, triage,
env, index. 29 unittest cases in scripts/tests/test_buglog.py.
- scripts/git-hooks/pre-commit runs `check --staged`: incomplete staged
records, a legacy record hand-changed to fixed without the fix-time
sections, a new record claiming legacy: true, or a stale index refuse
the commit.
- scripts/gitea-sync.py reads the records: issue body = the record's
sections plus linked fix commits (origin remote, GITEA_COMMIT_REPO to
override), and a body hash so an issue's text is refreshed when the
record changes.
- bug-1866 rewritten to the full standard as the worked example.

# bug-660: Failover election takes minutes (11+ PreVote rounds) to converge
|
|
|
|
## Description
|
|
Failover election takes minutes (11+ PreVote rounds) to converge. A standby keeps denying a legitimately-higher-term candidate's PreVote with reason=fresh_heartbeat for ~2.5 min AFTER its primary died (ctrl-3 killed 21:44:14, ctrl-2 logs 'PreVote DENIED ... reason=fresh_heartbeat (my_term=3)' until 21:46:58).

## Reproduction

## Root cause
|
|
The PreVote/vote eligibility gate raft_cb_vote_eligible (ha.c:311) denied on `role==CTRL_STANDBY && ha_heartbeat_is_fresh(ha)` — checking freshness ALONE. ha_heartbeat_is_fresh derives from ha->last_activity, but ha_arm_heartbeat_timeout_vtask resets last_activity=now on EVERY watchdog (re-)arm, and ha_prevote_rearm_liveness re-arms it after every lost PreVote. So a node with NO live primary perpetually refreshes its own 'fresh heartbeat' each failover cycle and denies all other candidates (reason=fresh_heartbeat), blocking convergence until it happens to restart. The sibling gate in handle_request_vote (ha.c:2205) already required `primary_ctrl_fd >= 0 && is_fresh`; raft_cb_vote_eligible was missing the primary_ctrl_fd guard. The existing fresh-deny tests even documented the intent ('the deny gate requires a live connection AND a fresh heartbeat', set primary_ctrl_fd=999), but production didn't enforce it.

|
|
|
## Fix
|
|
Added `ha->primary_ctrl_fd >= 0 &&` to the ha.c:311 eligibility gate (mirrors ha.c:2205). primary_ctrl_fd is -1 on init / after the primary RDHUPs / after the liveness watchdog fires, and a real fd only via config_repl.c:1451 (first ctrlhello from the live primary) — so a dead/absent primary no longer masquerades as fresh and the standby GRANTS, converging in ~1 round. Kept cluster.c:526 denial-reason logging in sync. TDD: test_pre_vote_dead_primary_grants_despite_fresh_activity (fresh last_activity + primary_ctrl_fd=-1 -> GRANT); verified RED (Expected 1 Was 0) without the guard, GREEN with it, and the 3 existing fresh-deny tests (fd=999) unaffected. Full controller suite + libxce 169/0, zero regressions.
