repl_add_standby()'s "find first empty slot" scan treated any ep==NULL
slot as available, with no awareness that a disconnected slot can still
hold an unexpired bug-1147 WAL-retention guard (last_disconnected_lsn,
set by repl_remove_standby, meant to be cleared only by
repl_expire_disconnect_slots once snap_interval_s genuinely elapses).
The scan could pick a guard-holding slot over a genuinely virgin one
purely by lower index, then unconditionally memset it -- destroying the
guard before trim_wal_segments/repl_trim_lsn could ever honor it.
Confirmed via 2/2 reproducible live 3-node soak runs (config-upgrade-
snapshot task 8.9's new --config-upgrade-wal-trim mode): a killed
standby's still-needed WAL segment got trimmed out from under it.
Now a two-pass scan: prefer a genuinely virgin slot; only fall back to
reusing a guard-holding slot (oldest last_disconnect_time first, to
discard the least remaining protection) when no virgin slot exists --
logged via WARN() so the discarded guard is operator-visible rather
than silent. Defense-in-depth at the slot-allocation layer, independent
of whatever triggers a given repl_add_standby call (a separate,
not-fully-root-caused ha.c reconnect-sweep defect is the specific
trigger seen in the soak, out of this fix's scope).
Independently reviewed across two rounds: round 1 flagged the
exhausted-fallback path silently discarding a guard with zero logging;
remediated with a WARN() matching this file's existing repl_broadcast
convention, empirically confirmed to fire only on the fallback path
with correct content. Suite: 1028 -> 1030 tests, 0 failures (net of
this fix; final combined total with bug-1472 landing concurrently:
1033 tests, 0 failures).
worker_from_capnp()'s idempotency guard returned -EEXIST unconditionally
whenever the target worker already existed, discarding the decoded WAL
payload entirely. Correct for a duplicate WAL_WORKER_CTRL/JOIN replay,
but wrong for HOOK_DETAIL_WORKER_UPDATE (hostctrl -c/-o admin close/open):
the target existing is the normal case there, yet the status change was
silently dropped on every member other than the one that processed the
RPC directly -- a permanent, unconditional, cluster-wide replication gap
for host admin-status, confirmed via byte-precise checkpoint divergence
on a live 3-node soak.
Now decodes the entry's hook_detail before applying the existing-worker
guard: JOIN keeps its no-op short-circuit; UPDATE replaces (not ORs,
since HOST_OPEN must clear closed bits) the existing worker's
XCE_WORKER_ADMIN_MASK bits with the decoded payload's, in place, under
the worker's own write lock. HOOK_DETAIL_WORKER_DEAD is deliberately
left unfixed -- its replication would need fields (resvals) that never
round-trip through the Worker capnp wire schema at all, and this
codebase already treats liveness state as locally-derived rather than
WAL-replicated elsewhere -- filed separately as bug-1472-remainder.
Independently reviewed: RED->GREEN cycle re-reproduced from scratch,
replace-vs-OR semantics and lock discipline verified directly, DEAD
deferral corroborated against an independent design-invariant comment
this fix didn't originally cite. Suite: 1030 -> 1033 tests, 0 failures.
Add run_config_upgrade_wal_trim_round() / --config-upgrade-wal-trim to
run-ha-soak.sh: forces real WAL segment rotation via small
--wal-segment-bytes, kills a non-primary node, drives a live config
upgrade to fire the marker-triggered checkpoint's forced trim, then
inspects survivors' on-disk WAL directory before the killed node
rejoins to directly verify the mid-catch-up retention guard
(repl_trim_lsn/trim_wal_segments, bug-1147) preserves what it still
needs.
Two independent live 3-node runs both reproduce a real, pre-existing,
out-of-spec-boundary defect (bug-1474): a heartbeat reconnect-sweep
race reuses a just-killed standby's freed replicator slot and clobbers
its retention guard before trim ever runs. Root-caused via repl.c/ha.c
and confirmed via git blame to predate this spec and be reachable
under the old periodic-checkpoint trigger identically -- not caused by
anything config-upgrade-snapshot changed. Task 8.9 stays blocked per
tasks.md until bug-1474 is fixed upstream; infra is done and correctly
proves the violation.
Independently reviewed: round design verified faithful to the
unit-level fixture, bug-1474 diagnosis independently re-derived from
source and raw logs (not trusted from the implementer's report).
Add regression test proving Req 4.4/7.2: a second WAL_CONFIG_MARKER
committing while the first's forced checkpoint is still in flight
(simulated via the checkpoint_in_progress CAS across both markers'
commit+apply) cleanly supersedes it, with the settled state reflecting
only the newer marker. Verified via a field-aware byte comparison
(post-checkpoint_lsn) against a non-racing control fixture, plus
mid-race assertions that materialization is still incomplete at that
point (cfgref_present false, fence set) despite activation already
tracking the newer config. Test-only; production mechanism (already
implemented) unmodified. Suite: 1027 -> 1028 tests, 0 failures.
Prove Requirements 5.2/5.4/5.5/6.3 via deterministic fault injection at
the two critical upgrade windows, entirely at the unit level using the
XCE_TESTING hooks earlier tasks built for exactly this purpose -- no
live soak needed.
test_marker_checkpoint_fault_hook_crash_then_restart_resumes_materialization
extends the existing fault-hook seam test: after simulating a crash
before the checkpoint write durably completes, it boots a genuinely
fresh persist_t/cluster_t against the same on-disk WAL via
persist_recover() (a real boot-replay simulation, not a same-process
re-call) and confirms materialization resumes and completes correctly.
test_leadership_change_mid_materialization_completes_via_same_generic_apply_drain
proves a promoted member's materialization completes identically to a
non-promoted control member's, by draining each through its actual
production entry point and comparing checkpoints byte-for-byte -- a
regression guard against any future role-conditional branch creeping
into the marker-apply path.
Root-caused bug-1471's single-byte checkpoint divergence to a genuine,
pre-existing bug in WAL_WORKER_CTRL apply (worker_from_capnp treats
"-EEXIST" as a benign no-op for every hook detail, which is correct for
JOIN replay but silently discards UPDATE/DEAD field changes since the
target already existing is the normal case there). This predates
config-upgrade-snapshot by ~2.5 months and is unrelated to config
upgrades -- filed as bug-1472, genuinely outside this spec's boundary.
Task 8.6's own infrastructure and its two in-scope bug fixes (bug-1468,
bug-1469) are already committed and reviewed; only the Requirement 6.4
host-admin-status-survival assertion is blocked on bug-1472, per the
project's upstream-ownership handling rather than working around it here.
Build the live 3-node chaotic-multi-kill config-upgrade soak scenario
(run-ha-soak.sh --config-upgrade) required by Requirements 4.1, 4.3, 6.1,
6.4. This needed genuinely new client-side infrastructure: a hand-rolled
capnp send path for OP_upgradeConfig (the auto-generated encoder is a
no-op for its Data fields, worked around the same way
xce_replconfigpush_req_raw already does), plus cmd_hostctrl/cmd_upgradeconfig
CLI commands.
Building and running this live surfaced two real production bugs, both
fixed here:
- bug-1468: an unrelated prior commit inverted OPCode_upgradeConfig's
primary/standby dispatch guard in cluster.c, making config upgrades
unreachable from any network client.
- bug-1469: apply_committed_entry's WAL_CONFIG_MARKER case never called
config_activate_committed(), so the node that originates a config
upgrade never refreshed its own in-memory state as part of committing
it. Killing that node before some later, unrelated event happened to
refresh it left its checkpoint permanently stale -- the first live,
empirical reproduction of bug-857's originally hypothesized failure
mode. Fixed by activating before the marker-triggered checkpoint write,
since checkpoint content is built from live runtime tables that only
reflect the reload after activation runs.
A separate, narrower checkpoint divergence (bug-1471, not config-related)
remains open and still blocks a clean soak PASS -- task 8.6 stays
in-progress until it's resolved.
Prove Requirement 6.2 with a real, code-backed mechanism instead of the
originally hypothesized lost_and_found re-homing, which turned out to be
aspirational and never implemented (confirmed by exhaustive grep at both
the pre-fix baseline commit and HEAD — bug-857 itself was flagged in
buglog.json as never empirically reproduced).
test_bug857_regression.c demonstrates both halves of the requirement
entirely within controller_unit_test, no live soak or old-commit build
needed: schedule_checkpoint's pre-existing WAL-threshold trigger is
decoupled from the config-marker boundary and produces genuinely
divergent per-member checkpoint content, while the marker-triggered
checkpoint this spec added converges members regardless of differing
per-member processing pace.
design.md's Requirements Traceability table and Testing Strategy section
are corrected to match; the redirection reasoning is recorded in
tasks.md's Implementation Notes for the benefit of tasks 8.6-8.9, which
still need live multi-process HA-soak infrastructure for Requirement 6.1
that this task deliberately did not build.
Build configcompare_paths(), an offline sibling to snapdiff/walcompare that
recomputes each member's active-config sha256 fresh from its own on-disk
workdir/name/conf bytes and reports identical vs. divergent (Req 4.2).
Wire it as a cmd_configcompare CLI subcommand in test.c, matching its
siblings, after review caught it shipped as an unreachable library function
in round 1.
Extend snapverify to match the current on-disk checkpoint format: bump
SNAP_FORMAT_VERSION to 2, replace the stale raw queue-frame decode with the
capnp length-prefixed walk, add host-frame and config-bytes-section
structural walks, and decode (not just presence-check) the header's
cfgref tag/sha. Without this fix snapverify rejected every checkpoint
written by the current codebase.
do_upgrade_config_with_bytes drops step 9 (wait-for-checkpoint,
restart_requested=1, cbuf_put stop signal) -- materialization now
happens entirely via task 5's apply_committed_entry WAL_CONFIG_MARKER
case on every member's own apply, no restart required. Confirmed
do_upgrade_config_with_bytes was the sole production setter of
restart_requested; cluster.c's read of it is now permanently
false-for-this-trigger, which is the intended behavior.
Adds xce_upgrade_marker_committed_hook (#ifdef XCE_TESTING, mirrors
xce_snapshot_chunk_hook's nullable-function-pointer shape), firing
right after config_commit_change succeeds -- a deterministic seam for
later leadership-change fault injection (task 8.7) at exactly the
marker-commit-to-every-member-installed window. NULL by default, true
no-op in production.
Task 7 of 19.
Requirements: 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 2.2, 5.4, 6.3
Wires task 6.1's upgrade_materialization_verify/upgrade_materialization_fenced
into ha_dispatch_gate's CTRL_PRIMARY branch (sequential block alongside,
not merged into, the existing config_serve_fenced check -- same
replication/read-only opcode allowlist, refuses state-changing ops
with -XCE_ERR_NOT_READY while fenced) and the promotion gate
(raft_cb_become_leader refuses to become CTRL_PRIMARY while fenced,
introduces no new WAL/log-completeness eligibility mechanism, never
self-terminates). Adds a 4-function self-triggering retry trampoline
(upgrade_materialization_retry_fn/_vtask_entry/_delaymgr_trampoline/
schedule_upgrade_materialization_retry) mirroring
config_activate_retry_fn's exact shape, hooked into
ha_cb_commit_advanced_stub alongside the existing config-byte retry.
Fixes a real bug caught on review: the fence had no production path
that could ever engage it from its zero-initialized default -- every
setter call site was gated on the fence already being set (closed
loop), making the new gate checks permanently dead code. Fixed with
two unconditional upgrade_materialization_verify() call sites:
persist.c's apply_committed_entry WAL_CONFIG_MARKER case (right after
persist_checkpoint_marker_triggered returns, regardless of its rc) and
myapp.c's boot sequence (right after config_activate_committed, for
Req 5.2 crash/restart resume). New test drives the fence through the
real production trigger (a forced -EBUSY checkpoint miss on a real
marker commit+apply), not a direct verify() call, proving the
end-to-end path actually works. Task 6.2 of 19.
Requirements: 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 4.3, 5.5
Adds a new, independent fence (ha_state_t.upgrade_materialization_fence)
distinct from the existing config-byte serve-fence: that fence tracks
whether the locally-held config bytes hash-match the committed marker;
this one tracks whether THIS MEMBER'S OWN upgrade-snapshot
materialization (task 5's marker-triggered checkpoint) has actually
completed for the current committed marker, with the live on-disk
config bytes still hash-verifying against it right now.
upgrade_materialization_verify(c) mirrors config_activate_committed's
shape: reads the current committed marker, checks whether
persist.cfgref_present/cfgref_tag/cfgref_sha already reflect it (stamped
by every checkpoint via scan_latest_committed_config_ref -- proof this
member's own materialization ran for this exact marker), and separately
re-reads the LIVE on-disk config bytes fresh on every call (never a
cached/embedded copy) to hash-verify them too. Both must hold for the
fence to clear. Logs loud only on the 0->1 transition, never
exits/aborts, always fail-loud + fence + stay alive + retriable.
upgrade_materialization_fenced(c) is the trivial atomic-read accessor.
Not yet wired into the dispatch gate, promotion gate, or an automatic
retry trigger -- that's task 6.2. Task 6.1 of 19.
Requirements: 1.8, 3.2, 3.4
Adds an explicit case WAL_CONFIG_MARKER to apply_committed_entry,
replacing its no-op treatment, that forces a checkpoint at exactly the
marker's own (term, lsn) via two new helpers:
persist_checkpoint_write_locked(p, checkpoint_lsn) -- the checkpoint
core (pin lsn, scan config ref, write_snapshot, trim, rotate) taking
an explicit LSN and never acquiring apply_pump_lock itself
persist_checkpoint_marker_triggered(p, lsn) -- shares the existing
checkpoint_in_progress CAS guard, calls the above with the marker's
own lsn
This fixes two hazards design.md's "call persist_checkpoint() directly"
text didn't account for: (1) apply_committed_entry's live-pump caller
(persist_apply_pump_run, used by both primary and standby online-apply)
already holds apply_pump_lock across the dispatch call -- a direct
persist_checkpoint() call would self-deadlock on that mutex; (2)
last_applied_lsn/replay position only advance AFTER apply_committed_entry
returns at both call sites, so pinning checkpoint_lsn from
last_applied_lsn inside the marker case would label the checkpoint with
the previous entry's LSN, not the marker's own -- fixed by threading the
marker's own lsn parameter through explicitly. A -EBUSY outcome (a
concurrent periodic checkpoint mid-flight) is logged at TRACE and treated
as expected/self-resolving, never retried. The new case has no effect on
entity interpretation/re-homing (Req 1.8).
New test_upgrade_snapshot_apply.c drives WAL_CONFIG_MARKER through the
REAL production call paths (persist_apply_pump_run and boot replay via
persist_recover), not a bare apply_committed_entry() call, so the fix is
actually proven against the lock-holding context rather than assumed.
Also fixes a genuine regression in test_config_repl.c surfaced by
WAL_CONFIG_MARKER apply having a real side effect for the first time
(bug-1466): an fsync-worker-thread race (t42_wait_applied polling helper,
mirrors test_apply_pump.c's tap_wait_applied) and one test call site
trusting an unreliable raft-derived LSN. Surfaces (but does not fix, out
of this spec's boundary) a pre-existing ha-term-safety/raft-log-replication
gap: persist_write_checkpoint_marker bypasses ha_primary_log_append,
breaking its documented current_lsn==log_len+1 invariant once a
checkpoint interleaves with primary appends -- log_len feeds real
RequestVote freshness comparisons, not advisory-only as first assumed;
severity corrected in bug-1466. Task 5 of 19.
Requirements: 1.1, 1.5, 1.8, 4.4, 5.2, 5.3
load_snapshot_entities' queue-frame decode migrates from the old raw
{name_len,name,status} layout to {payload_len, capnp QueueAdminState
bytes}, still calling the unmodified restore_queue_state. Adds a new
host-frame section decode after queues, dispatching to
restore_host_state (worker.c, task 3) with the same bounds-checking
and restore-before-advance discipline as the existing job/queue loops.
Un-ignores test_snapent_load_snapshot_restores_entities_before_advancing_position
(blocked since task 2.2) -- now passes for real. Also fixes a genuine
regression in test_snapshot_recv_out_of_order_chunks_assemble_correctly
(test_config_repl.c): its synthetic checkpoint-body filler landed on
the new host_count field's offset, tripping the cluster==NULL guard --
pinned to a well-formed host_count=0, matching that test's existing
fmt/job_count/queue_count precedent. Task 4 of 19.
Requirements: 1.10
Adds restore_host_state(cluster_t*, const char*, uint32_t admin_status)
to worker.c: OR's admin bits into an existing worker's status on hit;
on miss, creates a minimal XCE_WORKER_UNAVAIL placeholder via
makeWorker (mirroring the lost_and_found sentinel host precedent),
with a valid non-NULL hostattrs_t so the host's later real join routes
through rejoin_worker (not init_worker) and preserves the restored
admin status. Idempotent under retry (find first, create only if
missing). Standalone -- not yet wired into load_snapshot (task 4).
Requirements: 1.10, 1.11, 5.8
write_snapshot now appends a flat [config_bytes_len][raw bytes]
section after the host frames, reading the locally-held active config
straight off disk (read_active_config_bytes, persist.c) rather than
calling into config_repl.c -- mirrors scan_latest_committed_config_ref's
existing precedent of avoiding a persist.c -> config_repl.c
function-call dependency. Populated on every checkpoint, not only
marker-triggered ones (Req 2.4). No local config yet (early boot)
degrades to an explicit empty section rather than failing the
checkpoint; genuine corruption still fails loud. Task 2.3 of 19.
Requirements: 2.1, 2.3, 2.4, 5.1
collect_queue_frames now encodes each queue as a QueueAdminState capnp
frame (capnp_encode_queue_admin_state, mirroring task 2.1's host-frame
encoder) instead of the raw {name_len,name,status} layout;
write_snapshot's queue trailer writes [payload_len][capnp bytes] per
queue. restore_queue_state and load_snapshot's queue decode are
untouched (task 4's boundary).
Temporarily TEST_IGNORE_MESSAGE's
test_snapent_load_snapshot_restores_entities_before_advancing_position
(m_queues=2 real write+load round trip hits the still-raw loader) --
tracked in tasks.md Implementation Notes, must be re-enabled by task 4.
Matches existing codebase precedent (bug-847) for this pattern. Task
2.2 of 19.
Requirements: 1.9, 5.7
Adds collect_host_frames + capnp_encode_host_admin_state, walking
c->workermgr the same way collect_job_frames/collect_queue_frames do.
Every host currently in the table gets one HostAdminState frame
(status masked to XCE_WORKER_ADMIN_MASK only, no dynamic/liveness
fields), written into write_snapshot after the queue trailer. Task 2.1
of 19.
Requirements: 1.6, 1.7, 1.9
Adds independently-extensible Cap'n Proto frames for the upgrade
snapshot's host/queue admin-state sections (frame-only, not reusing
Worker/QueueConf which bundle dynamic state) and bumps
SNAPSHOT_FORMAT_VERSION 1->2 so a checkpoint written under the prior
raw queue-frame layout is fail-loud rejected rather than
misinterpreted. Task 1 of 19.
Requirements: 1.9, 5.7
xbuild's capnpc package pinned src to shen390s/c-capnproto's `main`
branch with a hardcoded sha256, so every upstream push broke `nix
develop` with a fixed-output-derivation hash mismatch (bug-918,
recurred 4x in this worktree). Override capnpc's src to a
fetchFromGitHub pinned at an immutable commit instead.
Cross-reference warnings ("references undefined entry") were genuine
gaps in the example configs, not validator bugs: src/configs/hosts.yaml
had a typo'd resource ref (mg -> mem) and referenced a nonexistent
host3/hostgroup pair; queues.yaml referenced hgroup1/hgroup2/ugroup1
instead of the real hg1/ug1 names; resources.yaml was missing the
r1m/r15s/tmp built-in worker load-index resources
(worker/src/resource_sync.c's init_builtin_load_indices()). Added the
missing host3 host, hg2 hostgroup, ug2 usergroup, and three resource
entries; fixed the typo'd refs.
"schema-valid but has no ClusterConfig destination" warnings for
resources.yaml's type/order/consumable/release fields were a real gap
in xcecommon/mapping.py's _build_resource, not an inherent limitation
-- the encoding (XCE_VAL_*/xce_order_t/XCE_RESF_CONSUMABLE/
XCE_RESF_RELEASE) is documented in include/xce/types.h and actively
read by the scheduler; the old docstring's claim that it was
undocumented was wrong. Only resourcemap remains genuinely unmapped
(its capnp destination fields are commented out).
Updated test_mapping.py/test_config_build.py for the new mapping
behavior and regenerated the full golden fixture's expected.bin
(legitimate representation-drift from the mapping fix, not a bug).
bug-1463: commit 94f50ce6 (bug-1453 CA-cert-plumbing removal) missed
GetJobOutput's dead tls.Config/loadRootCAs block in request.go, plus
peek.go's SetRootCAs call and serverInfo.CACert field access (the
field no longer exists on APIServerInfo) -- broke the xcecli build.
Removed all three dangling references. Also enabled NewAPIClient's
previously-commented-out InsecureSkipVerify TLS config, since no
xcecli method set any TLS config at all -- any https:// apiserver URL
would have failed cert verification, not just GetJobOutput. Matches
bug-1453's documented design (server-side TLS only, no peer
verification, mTLS deferred as P3 hardening).
Documented both the api-server (http+https) and controller
(server-side-cert-only, no client certs) TLS postures in
.kiro/steering/security.md, replacing a stale line claiming TLS is
handled at the network layer, plus a follow-up note for the planned
HAProxy TLS-termination reverse proxy once its cert type and
apiserver's own listener fate are decided.
Records bug-1461/1462 fixes, admin-config-tool completion, and
config-upgrade-snapshot spec work across anatomy.md, buglog.json,
cerebrum.md, memory.md, and the session/token-ledger state files.
Adds crash-safety, determinism, host-status, and apply-activate
requirements; records research on bug-1418 as a pre-work dependency
(its apply-lag promotion-gate fix is the template for this spec's own
Req3 graceful-degrade gate, and contaminates Req6's chaos-soak signal
if left unfixed first).
Syncs Kiro specs to Gitea milestones + one issue per phase, and
buglog.json entries to Gitea issues. Idempotent (safe to re-run).
Validated against nexa/xce: admin-config-tool spec + 14 bugs synced.
xcesched_push_configs() sent two hardcoded limit1/limits2 test
literals to the scheduler (behind a #if 0/FIXME "we use builtin limit
currently"), ignoring whatever was actually loaded from cluster_config.
Migrate those literals into limits.yaml as real entries and wire
conf4sched->nlimits/limits from c->myconf->cluster_config directly.
cluster_init_phase2 also downgrades its "cluster_config not loaded"
ERROR to INFO — a standby legitimately reaching phase2 before the
primary's config-push has delivered bytes yet is normal cold-boot
behavior, not a failure; it already matches load_primary_config's
INFO-level framing for the same condition.
bug-1462: raft_cb_become_leader baselined committed_config_tag to the
majority-safe floor across voters, correct for WAL LSN safety but wrong
for config tags — a leader's own actively-loaded config isn't
speculative like an unacknowledged WAL entry. On a fresh deploy every
peer reports tag=0 except the new primary, so the floor stuck at 0
forever and late-joining standbys never received a config push.
ha_promotion_config_tag_floor() clamps to max(safe_tag, self_tag),
mirroring bug-1060's WAL-truncation clamp pattern. Validated with
20-round sequential (63 jobs, zero loss) and 20-round chaotic
overlapping-kill (zero committed divergence, zero committed job loss)
HA failover soaks; unit suite 977/977 green.
deploy-ha.sh no longer takes a <data-dir> argument or --build-config
flag. Every deploy now generates a fresh self-signed TLS cert/key
(openssl, RSA 2048, 10y validity) directly into the deploy dir's
certs/, and builds cluster.bin directly into controller/ctrl-1/conf/
via xceadmin -- no intermediate staging directory, nothing preserved
across runs. run-ha-soak.sh (/xce-test-ha) updated to match: dropped
its own XCE_HA_DATADIR-based precondition entirely. Updated 4 callers
(run-ha-soak.sh, test-heartbeat-tolerance.sh, test-commit-durability.sh,
both xce-deploy-ha/xce-test-ha SKILL.md docs).
Separately: xcecommon.wire.connect() was loading a client-side TLS
cert, diverging from the real reference client -- netio.c's
create_ssl_context() presents no certificate at all when acting as a
client (cert_file/key_file both NULL, bare TLS_client_method()).
Fixed connect() to match, and since nothing else consumed cert_dir
(verify_mode=CERT_NONE throughout, no CA check either), removed it
end-to-end: discovery.follow_redirects(), push.push_config()/
probe_config(), and the --cert-dir CLI flag.
Server-side cert loading (mock TLS test servers) is unaffected --
moved into a shared session-scoped tls_certs fixture (new
tests/conftest.py, openssl-generated) replacing 3 duplicated
REPO_HA_DATA_DIR/skipif blocks. Net result: those tests no longer skip
under a hermetic nix build sandbox (which never had ha/data/) --
verified 165/165 passed, 0 skipped, via both meson compile and a full
nix build --option sandbox false .#xcecore_debug rebuild (previously
128 passed / 37 skipped there).
ha/data/{xce.crt,xce.key} removed from git tracking. Requirements
2.3/2.4 and 8.3/8.4/8.5 marked superseded in requirements.md with
dated correction notes.
Both meson-build.sh (venv creation) and meson-install.sh (wrapper
shebang) resolved python3 independently at run time (bare `python3 -m
venv` / `command -v python3`) -- correct as long as invoked inside
nix develop/build, but nothing prevented a stray non-nix system
python3 earlier on PATH from shadowing it.
meson.build now resolves python3 once via import('python').
find_installation('python3') -- same mechanism as find_program('go')/
capnp/packcc elsewhere in this build, printed at `meson setup` time
as "Program python3 found: YES (/nix/store/...)" -- and threads that
exact resolved path into both scripts as an explicit argument instead
of a fresh lookup.
Verified: meson setup prints the pinned python3, xceadmin target
rebuilds clean (165/165 passed), and the built venv's own python3
resolves through to that exact nix store path.
deploy-ha.sh's --build-config path (task 4.2) pointed at
src/xceadmin/.venv/bin/xceadmin, broken by today's meson/nix rewiring
(xceadmin no longer builds a venv there). Fixed to search the meson
build dir (xce.build/build.release/build.dbg), a nix-installed
result/bin, then PATH.
/xce-deploy-ha's SKILL.md never mentioned xceadmin or --build-config
(predates task 4.2) — documented both.
/xce-test-ha's run-ha-soak.sh hard-required a pre-existing cluster.bin
under ha/data/, exit 2 if missing, with no xceadmin path at all. Now
always builds cluster.bin fresh from src/configs/*.yaml via xceadmin
before every soak run, same resolution order as deploy-ha.sh.
ha/data/cluster.bin is no longer a checked-in fixture: removed from
git tracking and gitignored. It was stale relative to xceadmin's
output anyway (different hash from a different, older generation
path) -- the xceadmin-built one matches the known-good golden-fixture
hash from admin-config-tool task 5.4.
xceadmin's custom_target only built+tested (stamp-file output, no
install:true) — nix build .#xcecore succeeded but shipped nothing in
result/bin, unlike every other component.
Add meson.add_install_script('meson-install.sh'): copies the
xceadmin/xcecommon package dirs (not the whole build-dir venv, whose
pip-generated shebang hardcodes a build path that stops existing after
the build) into $out/lib/xceadmin-site, then writes a wrapper at
$out/bin/xceadmin whose shebang and PYTHONPATH are resolved against
the install script's own nix build environment — real /nix/store
paths for python3 and each dependency (pycapnp, pyyaml, jsonschema,
click), so nix's reference scanner keeps them alive in the closure.
No venv activation needed at runtime.
Verified: meson install --destdir and nix build --option sandbox
false .#xcecore both produce a working result/bin/xceadmin, runnable
standalone with a stripped-down PATH-only environment.
Reopens the 2026-07-21 design decision to keep xceadmin outside meson.
Standard onboarding consistency (README 3.3 `nix build .#xcecore` and
3.4 `meson compile` working for xceadmin like every other component)
outweighs the earlier concern about meson's single-artifact model not
fitting a multi-file pip install.
- src/xceadmin/meson.build: custom_target() wrapping install+test,
stamp-file output, build_always_stale (matches this repo's existing
clean-rebuild-every-invocation convention).
- src/xceadmin/meson-build.sh: out-of-tree pinned install + pytest;
stages a repo-mirror/ symlink tree so tests' fixed-relative-path
assumptions (src/configs/, src/schema/, ha/data/) still resolve from
a copied location, without touching their deliberate fail-loud
behavior.
- src/meson.build: subdir('xceadmin') under component != 'xcecli'.
- src/tools/xce-build.sh: xceadmin case now delegates to
`meson compile -C "$BUILD_DIR" xceadmin` instead of its own
pip/venv implementation, like every other component.
Verified both build paths: meson compile (165/165 passed) and
nix build --option sandbox false .#xcecore_debug (128 passed / 37
skipped — cert-dependent tests correctly skip under nix's
git-tracked-only hermetic source). AppImage bundling (README 3.5)
is explicitly deferred to future work, not part of this change.
design.md, research.md (new), brief.md and requirements.md (updated
during spec authoring: Req 1.6 resolved/superseded by bundling, Req
5.5 added, Req 4.3/4.4 extended for limits.yaml) had been sitting
uncommitted since before implementation began -- the entire 18-task
implementation was built against these documents without them ever
landing in git.
src/configs/*.yaml + schema/*.schema.json: the example config
directory and bundled JSON schemas most of the test suite reads as
"real repo fixtures" (test_config_build.py, test_mapping.py,
test_validation.py, etc.) were likewise never committed -- those
tests would silently skip (skipif guards) rather than run for anyone
else checking out this branch.
Adds end-to-end propagation tests through push_config's real
composition with xceadmin.discovery (not just discovery.py's own
unit tests): a 4-mock-server redirect chain proving TooManyRedirectsError
surfaces correctly, and a monkeypatched-timeout test proving
NoPrimaryError does too, without waiting out a real 30s socket
timeout. Also locks in and documents a real wire-contract limitation:
ProbeConfigTagReply carries no rejection signal, so dry-run's
accepted=False path is unreachable today by design, not an oversight.
This completes all 18 sub-tasks in tasks.md.
tests/fixtures/{minimal,full}/configs/*.yaml + checked-in expected.bin
golden files, added to test_config_build.py. Catches representation
drift (bytes changing even when decoded content stays correct) that
the existing structural/decode-based assertions can't detect.
5.1 (mapping) and 5.2 (wire framing) are already fully satisfied by
task 2.3's test_mapping.py and task 2.4's test_wire.py -- no new
tests, would have been pure duplication.
5.3: test_schema_bundling.py cross-checks both bundling mechanisms
(capnp schema, JSON validation schemas) resolve consistently under
the active install, and found a real gap: a corrupted bundled JSON
schema crashed validate_yaml() with a raw json.JSONDecodeError
instead of a clean ValidationError. Fixed in xcecommon/validation.py.
Add --build-config (parsed anywhere in the arg list) that rebuilds
<data-dir>/cluster.bin from configs/ via the venv's xceadmin before
deploying; a missing cluster.bin auto-builds the same way even
without the flag. An existing cluster.bin with no flag passed is
left byte-for-byte untouched, matching prior behavior. xceadmin and
the configs source are resolved relative to the script's own
location, not the caller's CWD.
Verified live: missing-file auto-build, untouched-when-present (same
mtime/SHA), and forced rebuild reproducing byte-identical output.
Wire config build/config push --dry-run onto the click group.
Thin layer only: one XceAdminError dispatch surface plus an OSError
catch (ConnectionRefusedError and friends propagate unwrapped from
xcecommon.wire by design and need formatting here), and a
KeyboardInterrupt handler for a clean "cancelled" message (socket
cleanup already happens via push.py's own try/finally).
push_config()/probe_config(): build/send Request{opcode:upgradeConfig}
and the direct-struct ProbeConfigTagRequest respectively, following
redirects to the primary for the former (ProbeConfigTagReply has no
redirect fields, so probe_config connects directly). Maps controller
status/reply-variant failures to typed results/errors. Tested against
a real local TLS mock controller built from the bundled schema, since
neither opcode has a live controller-side handler today (separately
documented, unrelated to this task).
Unblocked mid-task by bug-1461 (commit e53c086): controller.capnp had
a struct-name collision that miscompiled UpgradeConfigRequest.sha256/
.bytes, making this task's core request impossible to construct via
pycapnp until fixed at the schema root.
controller.capnp declared `struct Data $C.mapname("xce_data_t")` (an
OPCode_get query-result tagged union) at file scope, which shadows
Cap'n Proto's builtin Data blob type for every later `: Data` field in
the same file. This silently miscompiled 7 fields across 6 structs as
a struct-pointer type instead of a raw byte blob: UpgradeConfigRequest
.sha256/.bytes, ReplConfigReply.sha256/.bytes, ReplConfigPushRequest
.sha256/.bytes, ReplEnvelope.payload, SnapshotTransfer's chunk
payload, WalCatchupEntry.payload/.batchPayloads, and CtrlHelloRequest
.key. Production C code had already routed around it for years via
hand-rolled raw capn_ptr manipulation (see request.c's own comments);
nothing before now needed the generated codec/accessors to actually
work for these fields.
Renamed the local struct to XceData (capnp-level name only; the
$C.mapname("xce_data_t") C typedef is unchanged) and explicitly
repointed getdata/pushmsg at XceData by name, since those two fields
correctly want the local tagged union. Updated every derived
generated-identifier reference across 19 hand-written files spanning
controller, lib, scheduler, and the Go apiserver/xcecli CGo bindings.
Fixed 5 call sites in lib/request.c that had been typed against the
old workaround alias but now legitimately receive the correct
capn_data type (a pure type-name swap -- Data_ptr/XceData_ptr and
capn_data share the identical {capn_ptr p} layout).
Verified via full rebuild+test: lib (1/1), controller (3/3, incl. the
job-array push regression tests), scheduler (15/15), Go apiserver +
xcecli (all packages green), and a direct pycapnp round-trip proving
UpgradeConfigRequest.sha256/.bytes now encode/decode correctly.
Bug: bug-1461 (.wolf/buglog.json). Unblocks admin-config-tool task 3.3.
Generic, opcode-agnostic redirect-following against RequestReply's
redirectHost/redirectPort. Follows up to 3 hops, displaying each
redirect target; a 4th redirect raises TooManyRedirectsError. A
connection timeout to any hop is interpreted as "no primary
available" and raised as NoPrimaryError naming that hop.
config build pipeline: scan the 7 known YAML filenames, validate
each present file, run cross-file business-rule checks, map to
ClusterConfig, serialize. Missing files become empty sections;
schema-valid-but-unmapped fields and undefined references warn to
stderr instead of failing. write_output() handles -o <path>/-o -
and returns the hex SHA-256 digest (printing it is the CLI's job).
